Matthew Johns sex-storm woman marries
Article from: Herald Sun

Janet Fife-Yeomans

May 18, 2009 12:00am

THE woman at the centre of the Matthew Johns sex scandal has since married a rugby union player.

The couple live overseas, where friends said she was "trying to get on with her life".

Her family in New Zealand, who knew nothing about the 2002 group sex scandal until last week, refused to comment.

But the owner of the Racecourse Hotel in Christchurch said that while rugby league stalwart Johns and the Cronulla Sharks were welcome back at the hotel, their alleged victim was not.

John Butterfield said the Sharks squad who stayed there in 2002 were "a great bunch of guys".

He criticised their accuser, then a 19-year-old university student who worked part-time at the hotel.

"It's buggered Matthew Johns's whole life," Mr Butterfield said.

Mr Butterfield said the woman had crowed to staff about a sexual liaison with two footballers in the men's toilet at a sports bar the night before the group sex session.

It is not known if they were Cronulla players.

She claims that on the following night, Cronulla players climbed in through the bathroom window of Room 15, where she was having sex with Johns and Brett Firman.

Mr Butterfield, whose son built the motel-style unit, said that was not possible.

"There's no way you can get through the window," he said.

"They were a great bunch of guys. It was a pleasure to have them here. They would be welcomed back any time."

Mr Butterfield said he felt sorry for Johns and his family.

"His kids think of him as a hero, and he is. But he's being portrayed as a gang rapist, and he isn't," he said.

"I'm just disgusted that a staff member would carry on like that. They have to realise - and it's in their contract - they are not allowed to fraternise with the guests.

"It's a no-no.

"I was really brassed off about it all, that a member of staff would do this in the hotel.

"It's a sad thing, the whole thing, but there's nothing that I could have done or that the manager could have done."

His wife, Yvonne Butterfield, said she had sympathy for the Johns family and she "wouldn't like my children to live with that".

"I do think the others who were there should all admit it, but then again it's going to cause so much more grief," she said.

Christchurch police said there was no evidence to lay criminal charges against any of the Sharks squad.

Nor would they charge the young woman with making a false complaint.

I would have thought she'd stay away from footy players. The irony.

Another nail in the coffin of 'Clare's' story, and hopefully another nail pulled out of Matthew Johns one.

Why didn't the ABC actually do some investigating reporting and find this out before they destroyed Matthew Johns life? Absolutely disgusting.

I say to everyone, men and women alike, it could be you who is the victim of a malicious fantasist, and it could be your career and life that is destroyed, please take a stand for justice.

Perhaps it would not be a 4 corners report, but a youtube video, online blogs and forums, false reports to police, phone calls, emails, flyers at work, on powerpolls near where you live... It's horrible, when we allow justice to be so perverted, we no longer live in a free society.

Once again police do not lay charges, the DPP, or the NZ equivalent, do.

Charges are very rarely laid against false rape claims, especially in high profile cases.

Crystal Magnum in the Duke Lacrosse case did not have any charges laid against her, despite her patently false claims.

The first reason is what do you gain out of charging a mentally unstable woman?

Then there are the defences of honest mistake of fact or insanity.

Thirdly no matter the actual facts of the issue, as Matt Johns has found out, if charges were laid against 'Clare' is would always be seen by other women, particularly real victims of rape, that if police or the courts don't believe your story, you will be punished. From a public policy perspective it is better to let the crime slide at this lower level than place doubts in the minds of real victims of rape.

The onus is on her victims to launch private civil action, but like in the Crystal Magnum case, none of the Lacrosse players (to the best of my knowledge) sued Crystal herself, and it would probably not happen, although I'll look into the Mark McGaw case and see who he successfully ending up suing.

If the matter had been prosecuted, and the player indicted, and they has gone on trial and she had perjured herself, that would be a far more serious crime and one more likely to attract prosecution.

What is far more interesting is that the media are now reported on the possibility the she may be charged with making false statements. Now perhaps she will get a taste of media insinuation and slurs, although they may be closer to the truth then the ones against Matthew.

Or he is speaking in good faith, and out of a sense of moral duty. His statements appear deeply moral, perhaps not complete on the issue of Johns infidelity, but certainly on the wrongness of slurs and of lies.

It's terrible:shock:
No need for paranoia -it's all around us:shock::lol:
And yet..curiously enough..it is the freedoms of our society that allow these fanatists to do their evil work:sarcasm: irony all around.
