Cleaning BBQ plates?

An old wire brush cleans all the charred remaining bits off the barbecue. Then use some lemon juice which works a treat - rub half a lemon over the plate to clear the grease off the plate at the end of cooking and give it a good clean up with some old newspaper while it is still warm and once done give it a spray with canola oil.

Well the trick is to clean up immediately after the previous bbq.

I use water and the flipper becomes the scraper. That gets rid of the stuff that fuses to the hotplate. You can also use a scourer (some come with handles which gives extra purchase). Pour a bit more water on to clean the final crap with a paper towel. If its too hot, then use the scraper as well.

It doesnt take long. Maybe five minutes.

There are bbq cleaners which are OK but to honest, a healthy dose of water and some elbow grease is just as good.

I stopped using those when the wire bits started falling off. Perhaps the ones I had were bad quality but I didn't want metal filings to clean up.

Ah, forgot about the lemon trick. You can also use salt to draw the grease up.

Bam - Believe the hype. I thought i'd give it a go after many a wrist strain over scraping crap off various surfaces. It cuts through farkin everything with ease. Haven't tried it on my bbq but i wouldn't be suprised if it sliced through layer and layer of the heavenly marinade fused to the grill/hotplate...

Tell the bloody missus to get off her fat ass and clean it after she's been making a pig of herself......that's what i do.
Is that before or after she fetches you a longneck from the fridge?

a combo of a few above.

Johnsy's fool proof method.

step 1 - Leave it till 1/2 hour before the next bbq (must have a cover/lid)
step 2 - Get it nice and hot before you cook.
step 3 - Lemon juice and good wire brush (must clean wire brush after use.)
step 4 - Salt rub it in with newspaper.
step 5 - wash it off with water.

Presto, clean enough to lick (do not try it)

As mentioned I just use a bit of beer while the plate is still hot and add a bit of salt to help scrape the gunk up. Works a treat! :thumn
