Cleaning BBQ plates?

You have to leave the previous BBQ's oil on the plate otherwise you run the risk of your plate rusting. It's just like seasoning a Wok. I find water work's fine. Heat the plate up so all the previous BBQ's oil start's to liquify and then just pour some water on the plate. Scrub with a a wire brush, scrape any excess into the drain hole, wack some more water on and dry off with a heap of paper towel. I suggest holding the towel with your tongs. This will lift everything off and the plate will be clean as a whistle.

It's a very old thread but giving a very hot plate a quick rub with some white vinegar then covering it with salt, letting it get really hot then scrapping it off gets absolutely everything off it.

Was given a pack of the above in my christmas stocking and after a bit of encouragement from my wife I actually tried them. If anyone hasn't used them before give them a try - they work an absolute treat. Still a big fan of the wire brush and the lemon/salt but these are very good and pretty tough too. They have little bits of rubber pr something stuck to them which gives them a bit of an abrasive surface which really cleans off the crap.
