Clubs should be compensated for "Gaz" like occurances

No one should worry to much about Gasnier, he was over rated. And I guess channell 9 where smart enough not to blindly gamble on Gasnier. He turned out to be a boring dud on the footy show, just blah blah blah with cliches. St George will be better off without him in the long run. These overpaid slicksters are never productive for clubs.

I have to disagree with most here and say he was not overpaid, he was underpayed like most RL players are. Instead of directing our anger at a player that does what any sane person would do, lets direct it at the system that is forcing top line players out of the game due to not being able to compete with other codes finacially.

It annoys me that we call someone like Gasnier overpayed, when they sweat and bleed and break there bones for our entertainment week after week year after year giving us up to 30 games of 80 min in one of the toughest arenas in the world. But dont blink an eye at a goose like Tom Cruise making 100 million for 80 of crap that he didnt even write, or do any hard stuff cause he had a stuntman.

We need to fix the system, not blame the players for earning what they are worth

The market sets wages, & its painfully obvious that NRL clubs (with the exception of a few due to private backers) cannot afford to spend more on players than what the salary cap is currently set at. Therefore I cannot see how you can say that league players are underpaid. A brickie/labourer would work a damn lot harder than a full time league player. They probably earn 35-40K, their work is tough, does this mean they are underpaid? No it doesnt. You can only earn what the market determines you are worth, & the NRL market has determined what League players are worth. You can try & artificially inflate that market but I would hate to see what financial position most NRL clubs would be in in 3-5 years.
The only way to stop players from going overseas is for the NRL to increase its revenue by exploring alternate revenue streams : gambling, web based media, mobile phone content etc etc. Once the revenue has grown the players are entitled to a bigger share of profits.

Dragons fans should boo gasnier onto the field for the rest of the year TBH...
Danish

I cannot understand this comment. He is only getting paid 2/3rds of what he signed a contract for (since his last contract negotiation). The club has fugged up royaly, not gaz. I cannot fathom how anyone can be filthy on him for accepting an offer to earn much much more $$ than he could here. Booing gaz will just show that supoorter to be a narrow minded dimwit. I think you should best stick to booing your clubs players, its not something we do.

Why is everyone sorry for the Dragons that they are "losing" Gasnier?

They get six months notice and the chance to spend his $500K in a much more useful way that will be of a better benefit to their club (ie two decent players, another "star").

Dragons should be smiling from ear to ear, and talk of compensation is laughable.

As a Dragons supporter the more I think about it (Gasnier leaving), the happier I am. The only regret I have is the number of potentially good first graders we have probably let go in order to keep Gasnier (e.g. Morris). Still I don't hold it against Gasnier, I blame our CEO and channel 9.

All those geniuses suggesting a transfer fee system, how do you propose the Dragons would enforce such a thing on a club that has no legal obligation to do so??

Transfer fees only work when kept in the same code, and for the most part only exist when that competition is the only of its kind (NFL, NBA, NHL etc). The obvious exception being soccer however this is still maintained inside the one sport and is also only successful as FIFA and the regional governing bodies agree to enforce it.

Why would the french rugby union bosses want to threaten their own clubs with being ousted from the comp when such a move would hurt their competition?

If the player wants to leave the contract, then they can pay the transfer fee or get the other club to play it. Who cares, as long as the Leagues club gets it.

Leave without paying it, and you are in breach of contract.
