The following was the best touted 17 man + extended squad that we could have fielded in 2018 (this was in a Fox Sports prior to the start of the season).
1. Matt Dufty
2. Nene MacDonald
3. Euan Aitken
4. Tim Lafai
5. Jason Nightingale
6. Gareth Widdop
7. Ben Hunt
8. Paul Vaughan
9. Cameron McInnes
10. James Graham
11. Tyson Frizell
12. Tariq Sims
13. Jack De Belin
14. Kurt Mann
15. Leeson Ah Mau
16. Jacob Host
17. Luciano Leilua
OTHERS: Darren Nicholls, Jai Field, Jordan Pereira, Patrick Herbert, Reuben Garrick, Steven Marsters, Tristan Sailor, Zac Lomax, Blake Lawrie, Hame Sele, Jackson Ford, Jeremy Latimore, Josh Kerr, Mitchell Allgood, Reece Robson.
(Latimore ended up playing most of the year off the bench)
This was (arguably lol) the height of Mary's tenure:
- A mainstay representative winger (Nightingale)
- A halves combination where both players have played for state and country (Widdop and Hunt)
- Vaughan, Frizell, Sims, de Belin all played in the Blues Origin winning squad that year (did McIness also go into camp?)
- England front row starter/leader (James Graham)
- Several other players that are doing well either with us or now at other clubs (McIness, Garrick, Lomax, Lawrie, Sele, Ford, Kerr, Robson)
But yet, we stumbled across the line into 7th spot after coming out of the blocks running top during the first ten weeks of the comp (and we were 85mins away from a GF apparently).
There is absolutely no doubt that we have been poorly coached, even in times where we had a decent roster, for a solid 12 seasons now.
But, compare the above to what Flanno will be inheriting, and I feel we may be in for some more pain for another couple of years at least. That is unless we can recruit some quality (particularly in the forward pack).
