Gould broached the same thing on 100% Footy a few weeks ago.

They're completely right, there's too many nothing games during and right after Origin, I was glad to hear they dropped a round to make it 25 this season, keep going I say.

Club footy hasnt really grown in 20 years. TV is good, but crowds are the same as they were in like the 80s....

There is so much more potential in Rep footy; just look at the passion Origin inspires and how quickly a bit of success for Tonga has made brought the fans out em masse. Indigenous AllStars has HEAPS of potential (just need a decent opposition).

The biggest opportunity i see in Rep footy is the chance to change up the format. Origin is so different to the NRL, i think that variety is valuable to shake up the season. I think the comp format is the most important piece. It isnt enough to just expect fans to love their team, they need to be invested in the contest itself and hate the other teams....

It’ll mean the game gets spread around even less.

Clubs will become protective of their 10 home games - say goodbye to country matches, Perth, Wellington, etc.

He didn't advocate Origin back to back at end of season as it would be like 4 grand finals in a row.
So suspect he wanted 3 rep style rounds where NRL pauses.

Kent started talking money and tv deals and cost to players as less games equals less money for them

Top players would still get money from their state or country on top of their NRL salary.

As Wayne said the international game needs to grow to grow the game and the potential revenue pot.

Personally, I love the idea.
The addition of two teams (Perth & Brisbane 2) and the extra fixture per round that it would bring would somewhat offset the decrease in content from a shorter season.
The NRL Premiership (sans Origin) is beating the AFL in ratings so far this year. Add the Origin behemoth and the growing International game's fixtures and you've got a very attractive package for TV networks.

This is the kind of wise advice that Sydney Roosters fans have come to expect from Trent Robinson. It is the Roosters coach who is giving much needed advice to an NRL which is in desperate need of direction.

For the next 3 or 4 years while Allianz is knocked down and a new stadium built it would be tops if we can cull the NRL season to about 4 games then Finals with 30 Origin matches and 40 Test matches to pad things out

That way I won't feel obliged to go and watch any NRL at the SCG

Either that, or relocate the Roosters to Gosford for a couple of years

Not necessarily. They get paid incentives to take games away. There’d still be plenty of clubs happy to do it for a game or two a year.

I understand that - but with only 10 home games there are suddenly fewer 'undesirable' home games. Also clubs home stadiums would offer better deals to keep the content.

Except Gus Gould beat him to it by a couple of weeks.

not if you add perth, wellington, brisbane 2 and adelaide. more teams, less rounds.

Play a knockout during the rep period. This would bring the amount of content during this period up to what TV expects. Play these games in the bush.

18 teams? We barely have enough 1st graders to fill 16 where are we going to get another 60 1st grade standard players from?

disagree. the 30 man roster needs a few years to develop as the lower tiers continue to build. super rugby and union in general is ripe for the picking too, crichton a prime example.

Having 'undesirable' home games that are worth so little that <10,000 showing up in a country town is preferable isn't exactly an ideal situation to be in
