Commentary on video ref decisions

I know this has been discussed before, but Rabs and Gus are so embarrassing.

Regardless of whether its a try or not...They are promoting our game. Luckily no-one from Melbourne would be watching on GEM, but seriously they way they carried on about that Slater try was embarrassing.

They are there to commentate. They are the 'voice' of the game. When the voices of the game are telling you that its a disgrace, the game is unfair, that they must be from Mars - thats not exactly going to inspire new followers to enjoy the game.

Daniel Anderson made a great point on Grandstand last week. He said commentators are obsessed with making a black and white decision on whether its a try. "THAT IS A TRY" or "NO WAY IS THAT A TRY" they will say. But alot of them are hard to tell...they still feel it is their role to assume a definite position. And then when it doesn't go the way they said it would, they blow up deluxe.

Just say commentate on the game without treating it like an editorial opinion piece!

I agree with you that a lot of them are 50/50 . With the Slater one people will say it was a bad decision regardless of which way the video referee rules. However, the commentators shouldn't be cheerleaders of the game. They should call it how they see it and if they truly think that something was a disgraceful call then they should say so.

Fair enough they shouldn't be cheerleaders...but they are still going on about it. Video ref just got a decision right, linesman did well, and they're still saying "I think the old way is better" and going on about the video ref.

Just commentate!

Was watching college gridiron game today and when a refs totally missed a big call the commentators didn't make a fuss about it, they saw the replay, said he's made a miss-call and got on with calling the game.

Tabs and Gus would spent the next 10mins talking about it. Really puts it into perspective how shit our commentators are

Can't wait till digital TV starts streaming separate audio streams, so we can decide to turn commentators off and just listen to field/ref audio.

Until then, mute button and CD player background will have to do.

Agree with the OP. Next week when the GF is broadcast to the world and a big Melbourne audience do we really want Rabs and Gus carrying on like this? It's embarrassing.

wouldnt be a problem if the referees could do their jobs. i know i wouldnt be kept in my job if i f**ked up so consistently, so why havent these f**kwits got the sack. thought we just got $1b, that should be able to buy a couple of refs.

If anyone thinks that Slater try should have been awarded in their opinion they are simply wrong. You can SEE the separation. There is no doubt, and anyone who complained about it not being awarded would be geniused.

Agreed.
No, they are not supposed to be cheerleaders - but they end up running our game down. There is a middle path between pointing out (apparent) errors and just taking a dump on the sport.

The issue is Gus somehow thinks droning on and on about how poor a call was is somehow constructive or interesting. Then we get treated to a handbag fight between him and Rabs for 10 minutes.

It's embarrassing and tedious, but essentially its because they have no worthwhile producer to bring them into line.

I really think if you sat them both down and made them listen to it they would be surprised.

As for Gus, he's a f**kwit. The refs are subject to pressure and make poor decisions. Like players if they make enough they are sacked, or the coach is. That's it. No need to f**king bemoan it and have a thorough sulk after every poor call.

I used to defend Rabs because Gould would actively goad him into addressing his petty agendas but this year Rabs has really lost it. Any hint of criticism and he just goes off. I'm surprised he didn't sook at Sterlo for subtly correcting him on Widdop knocking on in the lead up to Manly's second try.

Every commentary team is guilty of this though. Braybrook is still the worst, even at NYC level, he spends more time criticizing the referees than the actual contest.

This, their tangential jibber, the cross promo jibber, the betting jibber, the Joey, Freddy, Locky, Wally jibber. Let's just hope Nein don't get the rights for the next 5 years or soooooooooooohhhh, wait a sec.

Sterlo is only one worth feeding. Call the game FFS and try and get the players names right first before all the self indulgent shite.
