Brisbane captain Corey Parker has credited coach Wayne Bennett's brutally honest ratings system for instilling accountability within the playing group.

The Broncos are cruising at the top of the NRL ladder on the back of six straight wins, including an unbeaten stretch through the Origin period for the first time since 1999.

Parker told Big League how Bennett's requirement for every player to rate their weekly performance has driven the team to greater heights in 2015.

"It (the ratings) gives you a sense of pride, but the other thing it does is reveal the real honesty that everyone's got", Parker said.

"Everyone who plays professional sport is their own hardest marker and you don't really need too much more from the coaches if you can sit there in front of your peers and they can judge you honestly and you can judge yourself honestly.

"This enables us to talk about what we can work on individually and as a side, but more to the point you are pretty honest about your own assessment."

Parker believes fellow Brisbane forward and Queensland team-mate Sam Thaiday is one player who has particularly thrived under the tutelage of Bennett.

"Sam has been great this year," he said. "It might have just been a change that was needed in terms of coaching staf. We all know the sort of player Sam can be and has been for a period of time, but he's taken his game to a new level this year.

"On the back of that I think we are seeing great results. I know Sam has been negotiating with Brisbane for a fair while, but hopefully he can stay and I can still get to play footy with him," said Parker.

"He is a great guy and he brings a lot to the football side."

How would Gidley, Houston and co rate themselves

ANTHONY Milford has hailed the tough love of Wayne Bennett, who has repeatedly punished him and halves partner Ben Hunt at training this year.

Milford said the hard-nosed discipline from Bennett had made the penny drop for him on the importance of sticking to structure.

Bennett has been harsh on the halves this year, regularly pulling them aside at training and making them do extras for not implementing the game plan properly.

It is unlikely he will repeat the dosage this week after a controlled performance, especially from Milford, against Canterbury on Saturday night.

Milford turned 21 on the day Brisbane toughed out a win over the eighth-placed Bulldogs and now believes he is finally comfortable at Brisbane.

He said Bennett’s high standards were key to him transitioning from fullback to five-eighth, a move he had adjusted to faster than anyone imagined after a difficult opening month this season.

“Yeah, he (Bennett) pulls me aside after training,” Milford said.

“I love the fact our coach is like that (disciplinarian) and always wants us to improve.

“There’s always room for improvement, especially in the halves.

Could you imagine Stone pulling Roberts aside?
It would go down something like this..

Either his heart wasn't in it in Newcastle, or he isn't really the supercoach he is meant to be.

I think Bennett copped a bit of an unfair pasting here at times given the circumstances and I said so vocally at the time.

Saying that though he's certainly not blameless for our current situation either. He left us with an ageing forward pack, 1/4 of a spine and a completely f**ked salary cap with blokes like Aku and Roberts making nearly a million between them.

We're all been in that sh*tty job where an incompetent boss stopped you from really making the most out of the position. I think WB's time with us was like that. In a system where he's really allowed to do his thing, he's killing it up there now.

Agreed. The fact is, we were a basketcase before, during and after his tenure. He was successful prior to us, a basketcase while he was here, and successful immediately after us. He also managed to get us 1 game from a Grand Final - something no other coach has done since Joey's retirement. I hope one day he will write about his time at the Knights, I'm sure it will be a revealing read.

Pretty much sums it up really

No coach could have fixed us in 4 years and Wayne didnt have longer than that

He did have longer if he wanted it, but he didn't want it.

He admits he wasn't up to the challenge.

If the "best coach of the modern era" couldn't fix us, what hope do we have.

His family, including his disabled son live in Brissy. I cannot blame him if going longer in Newie was not an option for him

I think that Bennett realised what weve been all been talking about, namely the playing group didnt want success as much as he did, so he decided to move on.

The Broncos have a good roster and burning ambition, Bennett just honed the desire.

Yeah everyone gave it to Griffin but he built a very good, and more importantly, tough squad up there. They've been a very good defensive unit for years now.

That's not true.
Being around the 8th best defensive team in the comp for a few years doesn't make your team a good defensive unit lol
Glenn and Gillett have both been up with the most missed tackles in the NRL as well.
Big difference in their games this season.
