This just highlights the huge inequalities in the NRL. The Rabbits can sign terrible deal after terrible deal and still poach the best prop in the game without him going to market.

I would have thought Wighton's money would have been needed for this but he's still on the hook for 2027 and nobody is taking that deal off their hands.

Well we had $900k for Keaon that he didn't accept

That plus you'd sack anyone not named Cam Murray to fit him in

Surely it's enormous to pry him from a pretty easy life in Brisbane for a much more expensive one in Sydney. Wighton will be gone too, so I guess that $900k + a chunk of Wighton's. Oh well. Finals 25 highlights will cure me, I was scared that Melbourne were going to make room for him so would prefer it to be Souths under the raisin Bennett

We have Keaon's and Cody’s money which would cover his first season easily...

We will however have no money left to replace Cody Walker with a marquee half, but the forward pack we will have will make it a mouth watering proposition for any young half to want to play behind:

8. Payne Haas
9. Brandon Smith
10. Jai Arrow
11. David Fifita
12. Tallis Duncan
13. Cameron Murray

.

Knowing Haas, he won't be happy with the contract this time next season and will threaten to retire before joining the club if they don't give him more money.

I just can't believe a club is losing one of their best players after winning a premiership. That's never happened before. Penrith never lost any of their best players.

Surely it’s 1.5m minimum at an absolute minimum unless the 2028 get out clause was the clincher. I don’t think running out in front of 15,000 at Accor with Smith, Fifita and Latrell was the draw card some are making it out to be.

I believe it was the better public transport options and bicycle path network that clinched the deal... so his mum doesn't have to drive when she's able to again.

They might bring Cody back on unders but I think they'd be better moving on. They also have Dodds on the book for a few hundred the next couple of years don't they?

“26-year-old shares a close bond with new Rabbitoh forward David Fifita.
It is understood that Fifita and Latrell Mitchell played a crucial role in enticing Haas to the Rabbitohs.

Mitchell jumped on social media on Sunday to post a photo of Haas in a Blues jersey on his Instagram story with the prop’s contract details and the line: “Chess not checkers.”

The deal at South Sydney is worth about the same as Haas’ $1.2 million contract at the Broncos.

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett handed Haas his NRL debut in 2018. The Rabbitohs are locked in talks to keep Bennett at the club.”

1.2 million pa can’t be the right figure the broncos would’ve matched that plus he has all the tpa in Brisbane

Dragons paid keon 1 million pa. Souths should chip in some of the petrol for that helicopter

Also

“Immediately after the premiership win, there were rumblings that Haas wasn’t content. Reaching the NRL’s Everest had done little to settle his internal desire for more.

If rebel rugby competition R360 got off the ground, Haas would have been one of the foundation signings on a $3 million-a-season contract.”

While Brisbane’s salary cap is stretched, Haas has told the Broncos his move to Souths isn’t about money or unhappiness.
Having endured everything he has in recent times, he has said privately that he just needs a change.

Perhaps there was a sign of that with his move from the Kangaroos to Samoa in the recent Pacific Championships tournament.”

One can only assume there is a R360 clause souths were willing to offer that the broncos would not. Hell even without a clause I’m sure Haas would have zero worries just pulling an SBW and walking out.

even so, excellent signing for souths. They’ve been heavy on impact players with all their signings the last few seasons. This is finally an engine room. If they can figure something out with their spine 2027 at least could be a window

Payne Haas. Nathan Cleary. Reece Walsh. Stephen Crichton.

These are the sort of players you go "name your terms" and just agree to them. They are worth the risk, whatever it is.

The meltdown on Twitter from roosters and broncos fans has been so enjoyable

All assuming souths accepted a r360 clause and Broncos didn’t hence why he chose souths

Sloth may have been closer to the truth about Madge than I gave him credit for

I doubt it is, but if it's the Madge effect, I have to ask, so what?

Personally, I'd rather get Madge, flog your players, get a premiership, even if it pisses off your best players. 2014 was magical. I'm sure the Broncos fans would say the same about 2025.

For underachieving clubs (like Souths and the Broncos were before their premierships), it's a proven strategy. The alternative is watching guys like Latrell cruise around never reaching their true potential.

yeah if the broncos lost his signature trying to pay hardball with a 1 year deal due to the R360 threat it will be one of the all time fumbles

Stephen Crichton??

I could take or leave him TBH

But yes you are right in taking the risk. Teddy was one of those 10 years ago and it's more than paid off (injury being the main concern).

Souths have 100% done the right thing here even if they do lose him to R360. I would f**k Fifita off though.

Call it copium but Payne Haas has played the contract negotiation card at almost every conceivable opportunity.

It wouldn't shock me in the slightest if he turns around and accepts the rumoured deal that we are trying to put togethor.

I can't recall a player who has asked for as many upgrades and the like in recent times. He may have signed with Souths but right now, it's a 2 club ball game. Was his management using Souths to get a longer deal? Who knows.

I agree with this - even the ways it’s been announced and the very specific wording, though I suspect that’s mainly because it’s leaked out before the clubs were ready. I suspect a Brisbane player has leaked it (after Haas informed them on their WhatsApp group). It’s very rare for stuff like this to leak on a Sunday.

I really wouldn’t be surprised to see a backflip and new mega deal at the Broncos, with plenty of clauses in his favour. I don’t see Brisbane have much choice but to bend over and let him have whatever he wants.
