Bradford confirm Vainikolo exit

Bradford have said that winger Lesley Vainikolo will leave the club at the end of June to take up a contract with rugby union side Gloucester.
The Tongan, 28, is under contract to the Bulls until the end of the 2009 season but asked for a release in order to try his hand at the 15-man game.
He has scored 143 tries in his 146 appearances to date with the Bulls.
Bradford agreed to release him after completing the signing of Brisbane Broncos winger Tame Tupou.
Vainikolo could line up alongside Tupou against Harlequins at Odsal on Sunday week and, because Bradford will retain his registration, could return to play for them in the Cup semi-finals and final if they get that far.

He will be officially unveiled as a Gloucester player on Wednesday, where he will join former Bradford teammate Karl Pryce.
"I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone connected with Bradford Bulls for making the last five years so memorable," said Vainikolo, who joined the club from the Canberra Raiders in 2002.
"Bradford is my home and I know I'll be back. I'm determined to go out on a high and want to contribute as much as possible over the next six weeks before I make the switch."
Bradford chairman Peter Hood added: "Lesley came to see me and said that he still had a burning desire to see if he could replicate his success in rugby league in union.
"There aren't many players who have achieved as much as Lesley has with Bradford or who have given fans so much pleasure with their performances, which I'm not sure we will ever see beaten in Super League. "In view of this and his five years of unflinching commitment and service to the Bulls, we agreed that, should we be able to secure a world-class replacement, we would not stand in the way of his dream. "Lesley knows he is welcome back at Bradford at any time and we genuinely wish him every success with this move."

No real shocks here, it's one of those "worst kept secrets" that he was going to be leaving mid season. I'm glad that the fans will get a chance to say farewell to him though, there was talk a few weeks ago (after our last home game) that we may not see him at Odsal again, that his last game would have been in Cardiff.

Seems a little odd to me that we'd still be able to field him for the Challenge Cup semi & final, even once he's playing Union.

Union season doesn't start for a few months I think, it's ending here this weekend (a cup final).

Am not sure why he has to leave now, guess he wants an off-season and once Topou is there the his spot has been filled?

Suffering insomnia mate? it's too early for you to be getting up, and waaaaaay too late for you to be yet to go to bed :p

Topou's already arrived at Bradford apparently, I would have thought he'd be keen to start with the Bulls ASAP

Yeah, a case of the sleepness night at the moment, although sun's up now.

I agree Tupou won't want to sit around, but I meant the Lesley could keep playing for Bradford for a while and join Gloucester a bit later than it appear he will be unveiled, unless it's to do with the salary cap and not being able to keep both he and Tame?

I hope Vainikolo can sneak up to 150 tries. It won't make much of a difference but would be a nice way to finish up.

Tame and Lesley will play in the same team for a while.

I feel sorry for Vainikolo, waste of a good player.

Good luck to him. Normally I hate players switching because of the media mileage rah-rah gets from it, but I like Vainakolo, he's been a good servant to his club and to the game as a whole.

And, to be honest, it does look as though age and injuries are catching up with him, he's still scoring tries but has slowed down noticably and has needed knee operations for about 4 years straight now. Go to union, pick up a nice fat cheque and play a much easier sport. Will probably also get to go to the union world cup with Tonga.

He has been a great winger for Bradford, in 2004 he was unreal but now his time has come and his knees are shot.

I wish him all the best in his retirement.

He scored again last night for the Bulls, but then suffered a groin injury and hobbled off. Could have played his last match for Bradford if it's serious.
