Congrat to all Jet's fans for your win over the Bears, have been a parra fan for 31 years and bleed blue and gold but my first game i ever watched was st george v newtown back around 1978 didn't realise the significance of that moment and historty of the jets, loved Henson Park and returned years later to watch parra and roosters games when this was a temporary home for chooks, wanted to keep the tradition going so I took my five year old about 2 yrs ago to henson to watch his first game and remember u guys pipped us with about 3 minutes to go, keep supporting the Blue Bags.:)

It will be curious to see what happens next season when there is no Premier league comp as we now know it. Wonder if Jets will Re join the beam cup or not ??

The Jets will play in the highest competition they can. This means the reformed PL of next year.

Nothing to wonder about. The "reformation" of PL (it's actually more of an extension of the trends we've seen in the past 5 years) will not stop Newtown from entering a team. We have a deal with the Roosters and that provides a stable footing from which to participate in PL. Entering the Jim Beam Cup (whilst dropping PL) would be a step backwards. If we are to have one team, and this is what's likely, it should be at the highest possible level.

The thing I do not like about it is apparently we will no longer be playing against teams such as the Canberra Raiders for instance. They will be called " The South Logan Magpies " for example.

I used to get a kick out of whatchin the Jets colours playing against the teams and colours as they did when they were still in the NRL.

This will no longer be happening by the sounds of it.

The NSWRL draw this season has on a lot of occassions taken the P/league games away from playing prior to their NRL sides. Slowly weening the crowds off seein this prior to the main game, in a step towards the changes happening next season.

I am just wondering what is also going to happen come grandfinal day 2008. Grandfinal day will more than likely consist of Jersey Flegg grandfinal, followed by the new U19 comp finals, followed by the NRL game.

If Jets make a grandfinal in year 2008, they will probably being playing in a non-televised game in some backwater oval, against a team called the Cairns Cunnies.

Don't know about you, but I don't like this. !!??

2TB's, from what I understand we will still be playing against the second grade teams from the NRL, as the U20's comp will not cater for 99% of the overage players on the books that couldn't get a run with the NRL team that week.

As for the grand final, I see what you're saying. The PL (or what ever it's called) will no doubt play third fiddle to the NRL and the U20's on GF day. So my guess is that they'll stage the PL GF during the semi's, before the NRL GF. A-la JBC GF the past couple of seasons.

To be honest, I really don't mind what comp the Jets play in. As long as they are still running around in the highest possible grade that they can afford, still wear the Royal Blue jersey and have the big "N" badge - then I'll be there supporting the boys. However, I'm not so sure that a lot of the people who have been drawn into Henson the past couple of years would be all that keen on watching the Jets play in the JBC alone.

I agree with the JBC statement mate. However I will miss playing against those NRL jersey's etc. The other teams will all be different names, ( probably except for the Maggies and Norths ).

I used to get a kick out of sitting in an NRL crowd and hearin kids saying to their parents. Who are Newtown dad ??, and hearing their parents explain etc. This comp will sink us a step backwards as far as support and media coverage in my opinion.

Further to this it surely must affect to some extent the sponsorships coverage as well, and thus the club financially itself. !!??

With or without this "restructure" more and more clubs are moving towwards outsourcing their PL team. We can hardly call this new. We started it in 2000 with the Warriors. That's why the term "restructure" is a NSWRL wank to make them look like they're doing something. It's merely slapping a new name and a new trophy on what is a continuation of something that has happened for 8 years.

Of course, this outsourcing will be accelerated next year because of the National Under 20s which will replace the Jersey Flegg. Whereas previously, Jersey Flegg Clubs stuck mainly to Sydney and surrounds, the Under 20s squads of NSW based NRL clubs will have to double their away trips by flying two squads instead of one. This could increase club costs by close to $150k and they need to offset that somehow. (They don't have to offset it - I'm sure all NRL clubs can afford it. They just choose not). This is why clubs are looking to outsource PL next year.

As a club that has benefitted from outsourcing PL teams, we at Newtown cannot be too critical. We cannot exactly say "it's all right when we benefit but not all right when we lose out." Not all clubs will be outsourcing and hopefully there are enough of the "old school" club brands around for us to have a lot of good home games. Newtown, Norths, Balmain and Wests. Maybe Penrith, Cronulla and Manly. Who knows? Not all JBC clubs have the skills, finances, resources and ability to handle full time professional players. If NRL clubs link up with some of these dodgy clubs, they'll be worse off.

It looks set that Canberra will strengthen their existing relationship with Souths Logan. This means QLD Cup. Souths Logan will not play in PL. A lot of other NRL clubs are in talks. We'll find out as the season progresses (and knowing the NSWRL, we'll still be finding out in January).

In saying that, the Jets recognise that there will be a challenge in the coming years. it is easier to market, "Newtown v Parramatta" than it is to market "Newtown v Cabramatta". Let's face it, these JBC clubs have a very small following and the care factor of the average RL fans diminishes.

Even with away games, it is true that there are challenges for the competition. I watch Qld Cup on TV and I've seen all of the JBC grounds. A lot of the standards are terrible. Couple this with the small following of the clubs and it is no wonder people do not show up to these games. It will not reflect favourably on the NSWRL that their "flagship" competition will be played at some of these holes.

Newtown have shown that with good promotion, you can make the old Sydney rivalries something people value. It's my opinion that if the NSWRL got off their arse and tried promoting PL, that NRL clubs would be more reluctant to find feeder club relationships. If PL was on ABC TV Statewide and on ABC2 Nationwide, a few NRL clubs would maintain a presence in PL because of the increased brand exposure. For the Bulldogs, better that they see their jersey with "Mitsubishi Electric" going around than seeing a Sydney Bulls shirt.

Hear everything you have to say mate. But all I am saying is that this cannot be a good thing for the jets. ??

The way I see it, the importance of making and winning this years P/L grandfinal has now ten-folded. This may well be our last chance to be on a televised grandfinal game-day for the rest of all time. And this to me is a bad thing, and a step backwards for the club.

You're right. It won't necessarily be a good thing but we have to compete in the environment we're given.

This will not necessarily be the last televised GF. Nobody has said that it will be. PL TV has not been decided out yet.

P/L on TV would be an awesome move for both the game itself, and the Jets club. Fingers crossed ABC or FOX take it on mate.

The crowds were just starting to get behind the Jets, but I understand we have to putup with the deal we are handed.

Hope we are not playing against to many unknown name clubs next season in P/L. Otherwise the crowd for a Jets versus Cabramatta game might actually have been a bigger turnout. !!

We are an unfortunate loser with this. The National Under 20s was never about developing the future players.

The main drivers of the comp were frustrated club officials who were disguising a "desire to develop players for the future" to get out of dealing with the NSWRL - an organisation that shows no initiative. I keep going back to TV. The NSWRL has done nothing with regards to TV. Even with the JBC, it waited until it was approached by an outside organisation and then it charged the clubs for the privilege. Contrast this with the new National 20s. Within five seconds of the new comp, Fox Sports have committed to televising it - that's smart NRL administration.

PL clubs like Newtown have been telling the NSWRL for years about the importance of TV coverage for PL but they have hidden behind bullsh*t (TV contracts/timing/etc) to disguise their own incompetence. Only now that they are losing out are we seeing a move towards finding TV spots. For me, nothing short of what the SANFL/VFL/WAFL/Qld Cup has will be acceptable. That is, ABC Statewide with a ABC2 Nationwide repeat. It would be consistent with tout interstate counterparts and befitting of what is the state's flagship competition. A Jim Beam Cup style summary played midweek on Fox when the total audience is 15 will not be acceptable.
