How much of the recent NRL deal was contra? How much of this has been set aside to develop the game in the southern states? Or are we just going to advertise and promote our game in NSW and QLD. How the hell RL still competes amazes me with self interest and incompetency rife in the admin of our game.

Haven't seen any "fine" detail of the NRL deal other than the total amount. Certainly nomention of News Ltd. giving with one hand and taking back 10 mill a year withthe other!

It is pretty amazing, isn't it? Speaks volumes for the quality of our game.

And don't even start me on the NRL promoting the game outside its heartland. They certainly talk the talk but that's where it ends.

Would you sell ice to eskimos?

Would you try an run a raffle to win a christmas hamper in down town Beijing?

No! Why? Cause in Beijing they wouldn't give a toss, no matter how good your christmas hamper was, and the Eskimos wouldn't care if you laced your ice with Vodka (well, maybe if you laced the ice with vodka they might be interested..:) )

Point is, they don't care about league in the other states, so why waste excessive amounts of time and money trying to promote to those areas!?

For the same reason many of the yokels on here would never try to accept AFL, people in other states will never accept league!

why promote league in a state that does not have a major team....
if they were promoting participation yes...but the nrl no.
participation comes under the ARL not NRL. NRL is the national competition. the peak level.

the ARL need to set aside money and promote in adelaide and perth for mine...
they need to get a few clubs set up with some ex talent eg: a jim beam cup style comp in those states and get it going locally before even thinking of more

Then why does the NRL GF without the Storm rate higher in Melbourne than the AFL GF without the Swans does in Sydney? The GF won it's timeslot in Melbourne last year.

Why does SOO rate just as well up against prime time viewing in Melbourne?

The fact is, whenever it's been shown down there, it's rated well. The Ch9 decision makers down there are in denial, or are too close to AFL officials.

Never? The Swans and AFL were lame ducks in Sydney for the first twenty years of it's existence. It's only because the AFL promoted the absolute crap out of it that it's profile has risen.

That's not true at all.

I'm no Swans fan but they have definitely had a profile (if not bums on seats) in this city since their inception.

From the start with Barry Round, to the Capper years, then the Plugger years and now Hall and GF success.

The profile was solid, and has risen because of the GF win, which is always the case.

yes, the Swans have always had a good profile in NSW (even here in Newcastle, and we all think AFL is a joke..) The media is very AFL friendly. Wonder why.... couldn't have anything to do with those 'editorial arrangements' could it?

maybe the ARL should take a chunk from the NRL like News does, in order to promote the game in the barbarian states.

or perhaps News should be promoting the game, given it is in their interest, as part owner, to have a thriving, expanding competition.

Isn't it?

There is great value to the NRL in having a NAtional comp. More players at all levels, greater TV deals, better sponsorship etc. You saying that RL is such a crap sport that unless you live in NSW, Q'land, Port Morsbey or Wigan you are never going to like it?

Agree that the AFL's promotion of the game has had a big impact.

But to a parent in VIC or SA, who has had little exposure to league, they are not going to put their kids in League ahead of AFL because of the perception of league being more dangerous. On the flip side, parents are more likely to put their kids in AFL in NSW for the same reason. Add to that more people migrate up to Sydney, than down to SA or VIC, and more people feel more passionate about AFL in the Southen States, than League fans feel in NSW and QLD.

So if anything, league should be trying to continue to strengthen its own back yard and develop more passioante supporters in NSW/QLD and secure the future, before AFL takes more of its share in this state.

Don't disagree but it shouldn't be an "and or" situation. Expansion will only come about if the NRL is strong in its heartland areas. Difficulty is how do you measure that strength and when is the "right" time for expansion? I'm not saying they should put in a Wellington, SA and WA team next year. What I am saying is that as well as strengthning the heartlands they should be promoting the game at all levels in future expansion areas, making decisions (ir the TV deal, the WC venues etc) that support eventual growth and using what they have at their disposal to grow our game into a National game that will one day better the AFL as the nation's main footy game.

eh?

http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/realfooty/articles/2006/01/05/1136387572310.html

Although just over $80 million of the five-year total $780 million consists of advertising and marketing "contra", the price the competition has accepted for the football broadcast rights has further cemented Australian rules as the country's premier football code.

The National Rugby League last year sold its broadcast rights to Channel Nine and Foxtel for a total cash package of just under $100 million.

Agree with all that. They do need to get NRL on more TV's in the south. They (ARL or NRl, who ever is responsible) need to develop grass root junior cops in this area before they introduce a National team. If the game is entertaining to people they will pick up an NRL team to follow, until they get there own. Just like in Newcastle, the Illawarra etc....

No, but they're hardly the same thing

Increasing awareness in southern states may pave the way for the game to go national and I reckon it's worth a try.
