Storm star Cooper Cronk will seek to join a Sydney club after deciding to leave Melbourne at the end of the NRL season in order to live with his fiancee, Fox Sports TV presenter Tara Rushton.

The 33-year-old, a Queensland and Australian representative who's played 306 games for the Storm in 14 seasons, is contracted to the club until the end of the 2018 season.

Cronk named coach Craig Bellamy, and teammates Cameron Smith and Billy Slater as the club's "real big three" in an emotional address to the press on Tuesday morning.

"To Tara (Rushton) and my family, thank you for your patience. Obviously if it was a football decision, I'd be staying here," he said.

"There's a few things in life that are more important than footy, and that's pretty much the reason."

He added he doesn't know what is coming next, but made the decision in "the best interests of the football club".

"What I do next year is up in the air ... I've been wrestling with the decision of playing on or not playing on," he added.

Asked about breaking up 'the big three', he spoke fondly of Slater and Smith: "while Cameron and Billy are playing here, the club is in great hands. To even think there will be a gap when I leave, I don't buy into that at all" he said.

Storm coach Bellamy offered his support to the star, saying: "With Tara in Sydney, it makes it really hard for him. I can see where he is coming from."

He added that he was grateful for the advanced notice: "It gives us time to plan for next year."

"He is going to be a very hard guy to replace ... we've got a year to go yet. It had to come to an end at some stage, but when it does, it still ain't easy," Bellamy reflected.

"Melbourne Storm has been everything to me since moving down here from Brisbane as a kid back in 2003," Cronk said in a statement released on the Storm website.

"The club has helped me grow into the person I am today and I will be forever grateful to Craig, the coaches, my teammates and everyone associated with this great club for making it such a special place to be a part of. I will always be a Melbourne Storm person."

"To our incredible members and fans, we have shared so many special moments together over the years and I promise you I will be doing everything I can to make 2017 a season we will never forget."

Storm CEO Dave Donaghy said that while it was disappointing Cronk would no longer play for Storm, the mercurial halfback will forever remain a club legend.

"What Cooper has achieved here in Melbourne will be remembered by this club and this city forever," Donaghy said.

"We would have loved nothing more than to see Cooper remain here with us but we understand there are things in life that are more important than football."

"He has given everything to Melbourne Storm over the last 15 years and we look forward to seeing Cooper continue to do so for the remainder of this season and hopefully finish his career with us on a memorable high.

You know the answer is no so why even start the thread? Also he'll be 34 by then. As great as he is he's only a short term proposition for any club. He'll pick up a 1-2 year contract with a Sydney side that has young halves that need mentoring while he eases himself into a post-footy media career. Sure as anything.
We're fairly well served with halves even if Foz doesn't stay, our priorities should be long term fixes to our front row and wing deficiencies.

I don't think I'd be keen. He's nearing the end of his career. Want players you can build a team around not ones on the way out the door.

You don't think? Lol considering he's directly stated that he's moving to Sydney for non-football family reasons and if it was about footy he'd stay in Melbourne I don't think he wouldn't be keen... I KNOW he wouldn't be keen. The whole move is about putting his family life and partner's media career first, and reading between the lines possibly about transitioning into his own post footy career. Very rarely would I say this but its not even worth the club investigating.

Bigger problem may be the Storm target Johnson.

Yes, or Hingano. We may need to force the issue around Foran's future so we can lock down our future halves sooner rather than later. Would suck to see the Storm nab one of them and get left relatively short if Foran goes back to Sydney as anticipated.

Lol Calm down bro was tongue in cheek obviously. Just thought it would be a good discussion as its pretty big news that a 300 gamer is leaving his club for a swansong in Sydney.

Whatever club gets him in Sydney is in luck. You get a pretty good player for a couple of years and someone who can double up as a halves coach in that time too. Perfect for a team with young halves like the Dogs or Tigers

What a lure that would be. Very hard for him to say no me thinks.

I think the Warriors have the advantage with TPP and non-footy benefits though. He'd be a star in Melbourne but he wouldn't have the profile he does in Auckland.

IMO I think this is a good thing (possibly) for the Warriors.
I could see the Dogs moving Mbye or Reynolds to accomodate Cronk.

Realistically Tigers, Eels, Dogs are the only Sydney options.

Broncos, Storm will be chasing halves.

Pretty much an unprecedented amount of halves talent off contract at years end.
Cronk, SJ, Foran, Brooks, Moses, Townsend...

Well it will be interesting.
In regards to Storm, SJ is no Cronk, Foran is more similar, but Foran wants Sydney base for family reasons, so it gives Foran one less option with Cronk on market.

Suspect the ticket price on some of them just went up.

And in the same vein, prices for some may well go down as a result eg. Brooks

Storm may not look to sign an established NRL player if the right guy isn't available at the right price... they might be thinking Brodie Croft or Scott Drinkwater (Croft most likely, though a pairing of the two in NRL seems likely at some point) to step up, much in the way Cameron Munster stepped up earlier than expected when Slater went down.

Prices on the Sydney based guys just went down if anything (though that's likely to be a case-by-case and club-by-club basis anyway), as there's another (better) player in the market for those same spots now. That is, unless those players are getting interest from/willing to go outside of Sydney (Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle) - Brisbane seems most likely there, but only for very few potentials.

I'd imagine Melbourne will make a play for SJ, but we have the advantage in TPPs, Shaun has openly stated he wants to be a one club player, possibly future captaincy, plus his mrs is established sport-wise here as well.

I can see the Tigers going hard for Cronk, and telling Luke Brooks that turnstile defensive downhill skiiers are not worth $800k. Moses at least has some talent to him and could benefit from 2 years beside the best organiser in the game.

Cronk and Foran show up together in the halves for the Dogs and the rest of the Comp will be shitting themselves ...

My initial thought as well

Des and Foran well connected and a good fit for Cronk too. For Des to get his extension this week he must have something up his sleeve
