Corner Post...do we need them

I've been hearing Andrew Voss and Guss Gould for ages now talking about getting rid of the corner post. What do you think? Should it say, go or stay but take no part in the play.

Stay for in goal delineation when the ball is kicked.

Has no part in the play otherwise (ie) a player is not "out" by merely touching the post

Makes it all that bit harder for the defending sides i guess. Easier for the Video Ref....they need heaps of help (but not the bunker)lol. How about if the ball hits it from a kick?

Then it's dead in goal.

Who decides the height of them anyway?

I agree with them based on the rules. Why should a player be considered over the sideline because his arm touches the corner post. In every other part of the field it's where your body touches the ground over the line... not half a metre in the air.

its fine. adds extra challenge to scoring in the corner. a lot of amazing tries would be nowhere near as amazing had the corner posts not been there

I disagree, keep them. Shows supreme skill to get the ball down around the corner post.

In fact, I'd go as far as adding them on the 20 metre line, to make adjudicating 40/20's easier.

in what must be a first i agree 100%
one on the 20m line to help with 40/20's, if the ball hits the post, it's considered out at the 20m mark and thus a 40/20. But no baring on pla otherwise

and i like the corner post, it adds abit of something to the game, i love seeing a bloke have the skill to avoid defenders and corner post to jot the ball down.

We need corner posts simply because some rules about play will change depending on whether we are talking about a ball crossing the touch line, or the touch-in-goal line.

Despite video refs etc, they and players need that vertical visual cue to see the difference in what would otherwise be the same continuous line.

if you take away the corner post how do you know if the ball went into touch before or after the try line ?

without corner posts we would never get to witness such amazing feats of skill such as blake ferguson's try of the millennium the other weekend.

it would mean any old hack winger could score tries.

Rule is fine as it is.

I'm tired of people finding really pointless things to change, because once you change that rule you will have a bundle of problems... Look at what happened when the obstruction rule/interpretation was changed, or the numerous stripping rule changes, or changes in the time off and scrums...

Why do we feel this constant need to change things when they aren't warranted... Changes to catching the ball in goal on the full were needed to combat the constant use of the bomb, what is this rule change really needed for? There is no reason for it.
