Your right about Netflix, and Stan would be a good fit because its Australian, but it's also owned by Nine..
Amazon could be good if they wanted to get into sport, it seems to be popular in the UK as well who would probably be interested in NRL content.

But if we were looking into streaming-only then the best bet is to stick with Kayo, and then also have NRL.com exclusive streams

As for FTA, weren't CBS backed 10 keen on acquiring sports content?

the force majoure clause would suggest not. If anything once the game is back running Ch9 are more likely to be in breach if they refuse ot cover it and pay the nrl. Pretty sure there will be nothing in the coNtract about crowds. Only point of contention would be timing of the season and amount of rounds but it would be reasonable that negotiation around that would happen. There is absolutely no reason Ch9 could demand a variation on the remaining two years of the contract presuming next season is back to normal.

hypothetically if nrl could deliver its own streaming content plus get a reduce content deal with ch10 or 7 and on sell to someone like ESPN which is now in the Disney plus bundle could it cover the $325million tv income plus cost of producing its own content?
Ch9 pay around $170mill cash a year
If nrl can sell one fta game plus origin and finals for say $100mill a year
$40mill from nz, ESPN ,sky sports etc
That would leave $180mill from its own service. Ads would bring in around ?$50mill so that leaves $130mill plus production costs to raise from subscriptions. Is that sort of figure possible I wonder? At $25 a month it’s around 430k subscribers.

Peter V’landys to broker deal on season length for Foxtel and Nine

The Nine Network and Foxtel are more than a month apart on the proposed length of the 2020 season, but the NRL is expected to meet them somewhere in the middle on Friday morning as the parties involved attempt to finalise the schedule for the remainder of this year.

The Australian understands Foxtel powerbrokers are pushing for a 22-round season, which would push the grand final back into early November. The Nine Network is believed to be in favour of a 17-round regular season that would mean the grand final being played on the day it was scheduled before rugby league went into hibernation — October 4.

The likelihood is that ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys will split the difference as he looks to break a deadlock that has frustrated officials, players and fans alike. The hope is that when V’landys, Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany and Nine boss Hugh Marks walk out of the meeting, the NRL may finally have some certainty over the length of the season for when the game resumes on May 28, although it is unlikely any agreement will be reached on broadcast payments for the remainder of the year.

Discussions over the financials will continue next week but the belief is that with a schedule bedded down, the NRL, its clubs and their players can start making some estimates around what sort of money they will all receive.

Between them, Foxtel and the Nine Network pay about $300m each year to broadcast the game. The more rounds the NRL plays, the more money it will receive for the season. However, the longer the season goes, the less valuable it is to Nine because games could potentially clash with cricket’s T20 World Cup.

Even when the schedule is bedded down, there will still be much to do.

If I were V'landys I would put the contract talks on hold till the end of the 2020 season while they asses the performance and attitude of Nine as there are other players in the market.

We have the product and there are more players in the market than just Nine.

You wouldn’t even necessarily need to exclude Foxtel. could still offer then non exclusive pay tv rights at a reduced rate that would cover a significant portion of your shortfall. In fact given that they would still be driving the media narrative the NRL would probably want then to have some content otherwise they would be even freer to go negative or worse still to just ignore the NRL.

The US model seems to follow this route with things like the NFL having their own service but still sell the rights to ESPN and Fox and whoever else.
