I thought Rick Stone had it right with Costigan playing left edge and Taia right edge, with Houston in the middle. That is what I would do because it seems to suit all three of their skill sets.

I really don't understand why you'd have Taia at prop when he's a ballplaying backrower, Houston out wide when he's a clean-up defensive specialist with a good motor, and Costigan in the middle when he's small and ineffective against the big men. Not to mention Edwards on the edge when he's got nothing in attack whatsoever.

Basically I would shuffle around our entire forward pack and see how that goes before even worrying about how recruits fit in.

8. Mason
9. Buderus
10. Tetevano
11. Taia
12. McKinnon
13. Houston

14. Costigan
15. Edwards
16. Cuthbertson
17. Rochow / O'Donnell
Yep, Costigan was pretty good last year on that left edge under Stone. He could run a good line too, something we don't really see this year.

Houston is definitely more suited to lock where he can utilise those strengths the most. The same with Edwards, he's not a wide-running backrower either.

Nev is too slow out there. Backrowers now days are too mobile. And his tackling technique doesnt suit the fringe with so many good offloading backrowers. Neither does eddy's, neither are good at wrapping the ball up but both are good at cutting blokes in half.

I've been out of the country over the last couple of weeks, so I don't know why Costigan missed the game recently. Was it due to an injury or illness?

As I've said in the past, now Snowden is out injured, I'd put Costigan in the number 10 jersey. If that doesn't help him get back into form, I'd drop him to reserve grade. He may just need the embarrassment of being dropped to get him going again.

Putting him at prop is pointless, imo. He'll only get dominated even more in the tackle than he already has been at lock.

He didn't get dominated at prop when he played for the Dragons.

I'd argue he isn't the same player anymore. He used to be an enforcer of sorts but now he feels like the fat kid who nobody wants to play touch footy with but our mums told us to be nice to him so we have to play with him.

Our lock plays in the middle, like the props. I am all for giving your suggestion a go as he was good there for the dragons. But does a new number make him bigger/faster/stronger etc? He is hitting the line soft and getting dominating. I don't see why a new jersey would change that.

I understand what you are saying and I'd thought about it also. My mind just goes back to Gallen in SOO when he was moved to prop. His performance that night was far superior to any game he's played in the number 13 before and since. In this day and age, some teams still have the more traditional lock (main focus on defence and being active around the ruck). There is no confusion of the roles of the number 8 and 10 jerseys; run onto the ball hard and only think one direction. I'm not saying for a second that it will turn him into a good player again, but I reckon it's worth a shot with Snowden out.

Are you somehow implying that Neville Costigan is on the same level as Paul Gallen???

Wow...

I don't see how he was.

He was just saying that Gallen knows what his role is in the front-row and just concentrates on carting it forward rather than ballplaying or anything like he does at lock, and it might work for Costigan as well.

Both positions defend in the middle but thats where the similarities stop. Our props run tight lines through the middle but our lock seems to be coached to look either side of the ruck for hit ups and try and link with the guys out wide.

I too would like to see Nev forget about trying to shift wide and just straighten up through the middle. The few runs he made against the Bunnies that way early on on the game looked good. He seems to get dominated when he runs at an angle to the line

Wow...

Comprehension fail.

I too agree that he could probably help by playing a pure front row position. No cares about involving other players, or trying to create something.

Tuck and run, and only look to promote when the time is right.

I think it has to be prop on nothing for Nev. I see no reason not to give it a shot, we have nothing to lose and something to gain IMO. I'm not convinced it will work, but it might, and i certainly can't see him going backwards any.

Needs to go. Replace him with Snowden.

The new boys; Tets and Roch look the goods.

He is an old version of Eddy and Rochow with more errors in him and less athleticism.

I think that about covers it

I thought his runs were very effective tonight, well more effective than usual and that s pretty much put down to him playing straight into the middle. Really needs to clean up his errors still

Bench prop until something better comes along is his future.

He could be our next Paul Macquet, but he is a middle player only.

He is worrying, he got dominated by Nathan Friend quite a few times

His first couple of runs he made minus 5 metres but he ended up with 80m from 10 runs so his next 8 runs must have been good. He is a weak link considering what he is capable of. I really hope he finds something soon.
