LEANNE MICHAEL
03 Apr, 2012 09:26 AM
THE Inverell Hawks lower grades started their 2012 premiership campaign in encouraging fashion against the Uralla Tigers at Varley Oval on Saturday.
The juniors and reserve grade scored convincing wins however the Ladies League Tag lost its encounter.
The juniors won 42-24 with Matt Fox, Matt Kent and Tom Lavender all leading the way. Fox was awarded the club and referee’s best and fairest points, while Kent scored three tries and Lavender was also consistent.
Inverell’s other tries were scored by Sam Swain, Lachlan Walsh, Julian Schutz, Justin Breen and Tyron Campbell. Fox landed five conversions.
Hard-working forward Jake Lennon led the reserve grade to a 52-16 win.
He was well supported by Aaron Talbot, Chris Naylor and Steve Duncan in strong display of attack and defence.
Harold Duncan scored three tries and Todd Prince landed a double. Naylor, Robbie Dunn, Luke Fenton, Alex McCosker and Corey Baker each scored one try. Todd Cleal kicked four goals with Naylor and Lennon also converting.
The League Tag lost its clash 24-14. Michel Watkins scored four tries with Letitia Hartley and Cheyanne Munro also scoring. Inverell plays Tingha in four grades on April 14 at Tingha.

Roaring start for Tigers

LEANNE MICHAEL
03 Apr, 2012 09:23 AM
TINGHA won the battle of the Tigers at Tenterfield on Saturday with a comfortable 34-8 to start the Group 19 season in encouraging fashion.
Tingha led 16-4 at half time and then put the issue beyond doubt with a polished second half performance led by hard-working forwards Nick Dawson and Scott Fitzgerald.
Club spokesman Chris Curtin said the win was a perfect start for the Tigers which showed great cohesion across the field.
“It was a strong game in attack and defence and the match could of went either way close to half time, but the team worked very well in all areas and the signs are there for a good season ahead,’’ Curtin said. Halfback and new signing Luke Deaves, who hails from the Central Coast, was instrumental as were wingers Albert Connors and Will Jerrard. Connors scored two tries.
Forward Gabriel Boota also bagged a double and worked hard all game.
The win was all the more impressive considering the absence of captain-coach Nathan Blacklock and key players Darren Pithers, Craig Curtin and Jeremy Tickle who are yet to return.
Tingha also won the lower grade matches.
The reserve grade won 36-20 with five-eighth Brendan Sipple and second rower Michael Schneider leading the way.
Three tries to classy centre Terence Gleeson paved the way for the juniors 32-22 victory. Gleeson along with halfback Jayden Connors played strong roles for the team.
Tingha’s League Tag team looks set for a successful season following its 52-4 demolition of Tenterfield.
Elly Reynolds scored four tries in a convincing display along with Mleeka Landsborough who scored a double and with the return of experienced players Karen Hubner and Cassy Walls, the side looks set to dominate. Tingha hosts the Inverell Hawks in four grades on April 14.

Boomerangs host Magpies

CHRIS MONCKTON
03 Apr, 2012 10:53 AM
The Boomerangs reserve grade side are continuing their strong form of last season knocking over the Glenn Innes Magpies 56-20 in the opening round of the season.
The Rangs A grade side were unlucky to come away with the win going down 38-36 in a “thriller”.
Boomerangs president Mitchell Johnson said a crowd of about 400 spectators came along to Taylor Oval on Saturday afternoon.
“We had a descent crowd come along to the support the boys in their first game of the season,” Johnson said.
The Magpies were too strong for the under 18s beating the home side 22-12.
“The 18s had a few players out and were up against a pretty solid side,” Johnson said.
“We can expect them to keep improving each week this season.”
Throughout the A grade game the lead changed hand four or five times with the Magpies scoring an intercept try late in the first half.
The score at half time was 24-20.
Johnson said a few younger players stepped up to the mark with Donovan Munro being voted players player in his debut match.
“Donovan played his first game for A grade on the wing and had an outstanding game scoring a try early in the first half,” Johnson said.
The next game for the Boomerangs will be in Armidale on April 14. The Rangs will be holding their next home game on April 21.

Boiling Super Spuds too hot to handle in season opener

IAN MCELROY
10 Apr, 2012 03:16 PM
Guyra turns to 2012 in a new wave of enthusiasm and Spudmania leapt in bounds aplenty on Sunday with the boiling Super Spuds too hot to handle for Armidale. Guyra racked up 158 points for and 52 against in the three grades. In 10 years time when Guyra Rugby league celebrate its 100th year Centenary remember these three names, Emma Gillogly, Tom Starr and Simon Porter as they were the first try scorers in each grade on the new ground.
The Spudettes hit the ground running and by half time had jumped out to lead 28-6 and went on to win 46-18.
They certainly have some slick combo’s and a willingness to share the work load. Emma Gillogly, who has just returned from playing for Australia Union 7’s in Hong Kong where they were defeated in the final by England on the bell 16-12, grabbed four first half tries.

Captain Vicki Youman crossed twice as did Hannah Archibald who also did a remarkable job goal kicking, landing 7 from 8.
Points: Club and Players and Player Emma Gillogly 3, Brittany Youman 2, Hannah Archibald 1.

Congratulations to reserve grade captain/coach Mick Wilson to bring a side from
hiatus to base over apex high flying Armidale Pie Eaters 40-12. Willing workers make winning ingredients and the Spuds rolled up their sleeves to keep Armidale scoreless 22-0 at the break and went on to with the job to run out victors at 40-12.
Tom Starr at 5/8 had a great game and notched a personal tally of two tries and six from seven converts for 20 points. Luke Burey, Randy Mulligan, Chris Wilson, Brandon Pillar and Kiwi Matt ‘Wiki’ Tyler all crossed the white line.
Points: Club Tom Starr 3, Ricky Quinlan 2. Referee: Tom Starr 3, Luke Burey 1.

The Super Spuds went wham, bam, get back down the Pinch to the Armidale Rams when they butted them unconscious in the first half to lead by an astonishing 62-0 with 11 tries and nine conversions.

Dynamo Corey Torrens mesmerised them with three tries from fullback, blockbusting Fijian centre Ray Paserio created a big impression with a hat trick, Simon Porter revelled with the room to move for his trifecta, Rod Bull charged over twice and Sam Mulligan and Blake Handebo also grabbed four pointers.

Ben Vilder converted 10-13 from for the 72-22 thrashing and one can only wonder what the Super Spuds would have pilled on if only.

A second half penalty count of 14-1 against Guyra and the sin binning of three players for ten minutes, one after another, gave Armidale 13 on 10 allowing them to score 22 points. Along with a bad injury which halted play for 30 minutes, suffice to say Guyra had no chance to continue the first half rollicking.

The best player on the field was away and by far Guyra’s lock, 80 kg sparkplug Sean
Cox and Junior Fui Fui will make the opposition wonder what hit them.

Points: Club Ray Paserio, Sean Cox 2, Sam Mulligan 1, Referee: Ray Paserio 3 and Sam Mulligan 2

Tigers ready as Hawks fly in for tough match

BY GEOFF NEWLING
12 Apr, 2012 04:00 AM

TINGHA Tigers are preparing themselves for one of the biggest games of their season when Inverell Hawks come calling Saturday – and it’s only the second round.

The Hawks are the reigning premiers, a title Garry Lavender led them to last year when they beat Glen Innes 33-26 in the decider.
A week earlier they had knocked out Tingha, at Tingha, 40-18.
This weekend the Hawks return to Tingha’s Sport and Rec Oval with a new captain-coach, Paul Stephenson, who was one of the stars in the side’s run to last year’s premiership.

They are coming off a first round bye, while Tingha went to Tenterfield in beat them in all four grades in the opening round two weeks ago.
“They seem to be very similar to the side from last year,” Tingha’s publicity officer Chris Curtin said.

“Tim McIntyre has moved away for business and I’m not sure what Nathan Fenton is doing. Other than that we expect them to much the same side with a couple of new additions.

“And they will wanting to protect their premiership too.”
Tingha is coached by Nathan Blacklock this season.
He missed the first game at Tenterfield when the Tigers won so well, and will also miss Saturday’s local derby with a “niggling injury”.

“Nathan didn’t play at Tenterfield but will be coaching from the sidelines on Saturday,” Curtin said.

“Paul Leitinger (hooker) will captain the side. He and lock Nick Dawson will be the leaders on the field.

“Nick, who played for Group 19 and Country Seconds last year, had a superb game at Tenterfield.

“We don’t know know he didn’t get any best and fairest points from the refs.
“One of the Tenterfield people said he absolutely killed them.
“We’ve also got a few new additions too.

“Young William Jerrard has come back to us from West Lions (in Tamworth). He played a few games in first grade for them last year when they had a few injuries problems.

“He’s just out of the juniors and scored two tries for us against Tenterfield playing on the wing.

“Josiah Munro has just come out of last year’s second grade side and played fullback at Tenterfield and had a good game back there too.

“We’ve also got a new halfback, Luke Deaves from the Central Coast. He showed a lot of go forward at Tenterfield too.

“Our props Mike Curtis and Scott Fitzgerald also went well and the young centres Brandon Schuman and Karl Falconer might form a good centre pairing.

“They both had good games, it’s the first time they’ve played together, Brandon has come from the wing and Karl has been playing five-eighth and wing.
“The girls kick off the day with the ladies league tag followed by juniors and reserves. First grade should run about 2.50pm. It’s one of our biggest gates of the year, three times most normal games.”

Magpies start home season

BEN LONERGAN
12 Apr, 2012 11:20 AM
A massive crowd is expected at Kerry Mead Park this Saturday when the Glen Innes Magpies take the field for their first home game of the 2012 season.
The club got their season off to a terrific start two weekends ago with a successful trip to Moree to take on the Boomerangs.
Three of the four Magpie sides won on the day and after a weekend off for Easter the whole club is eager to get back on the park on Saturday against the Tenterfield Tigers.
Glen’s first grade side in particular has developed a strong rivalry with the Tigers in only one season since they returned to Group 19.
Both games in which the Magpies and Tigers clashed last year were some of the most physical encounters either played throughout the season.
The action kicks off at 11am on Saturday, when the Magpie’s league-tag side take on the lady Tigers.
The lady Magpies are defending minor premiers and will be keen for another strong showing after an impressive 72-nil win over the Boomerangs to start their season.
The juniors match is scheduled for a noon start. The new look Magpie’s youngsters
surprised most spectators with an outstanding performance to knock off the Boomerangs 24-12 in hot conditions.
Glen’s reserve grade side were the only side to go down at Moree, but will be confident of registering their first win against a Tigers side they beat convincingly twice last season.
The main game will kick off at around 2.45pm. Glen will be looking for their second win in as many matches this season when they go head to head with the Tigers.
They are coming off the back of a super impressive 38-36 win against the Boomerangs.
Glen should also be boosted by the return of a number of players who were unavailable against Moree.
Club officials are hoping for a large following at Mead Park to cheer on all sides. The Magpies will also hold a jersey sponsorship auction at the Services Club following the first grade match. All supporters, players and interested sponsors are encouraged to attend.

Guyra's Fijian connection gives G19 a new look

01 May, 2012 04:00 AM
GROUP 19 has named its squad for the Country Championships and the lion’s share of places have gone to
newcomers.
Guyra’s influx of Fijian players will extend to the rep scene, with Fiji Bati internationals Josua Koroibulu, Onisimo Tagicakibau and Apakuki Mate all named in a squad of 21 to face Group 21 on Saturday week.
Joining them is fellow Fijian Super Spud Ray Paserio and a host of other new faces like Tingha half Luke Deaves, Moree Boomerangs youngsters Brian Saunders and Travis Cook and tall Armidale forward Matt Munzenreider.
“I’m happy with the squad picked,” G19 senior coach Dale Keegan said.
“There’s a mixture of experience and youth.
“We play a strong side in Group 21.
“They have some very good footballers.
“We have a lot of work in front of us.”
The Fijians from Guyra have been selected virtually sight-unseen and, with such a large number of new players from six different clubs, it will be a big task for Keegan and his staff to prepare the team for action.
Fortunately, quality players in the form of Country Bulls reps Mitch Porter and Nick Dawson make the job easier.
“We haven’t got a lot of time but hopefully we can build some combinations,” Keegan said.
“There’s a few from last year – Porter, Kialu (Brown), Ricky Roberts, Warren Cain, Nick Dawson.
“We’ve picked a few Fijians from Guyra.
“From all reports they’re pretty handy footballers.”
Al McCosker and Brett Watts were also part of G19’s good run in last year’s competition while Rod Bull, Shaun Cox and Alistair Faulkner are no strangers to rep football.
Between now and the game against G21 at Armidale Rugby League Park, the squad will be cut back to 18.
21 players were chosen to cater for possible injuries in next weekend’s matches and to allow one last look at some players. Keegan wants the most in-form team possible for the game.
“It’s good to finally get a game in our Group,” he said.
“Hopefully that will give us an advantage.”
Group 21 has to get past this Saturday’s opener against Group 4 at Muswellbrook’s Olympic Park first.
The Hunter Valley side will be favourites to progress from the Greater Northern section of the tier 2 championships but both G4 and G19 are planning upsets.
Group 4 will settle on its starting 17 this week after a few changes to the squad chosen a few weeks ago.
Props Scott Rolls (injured) and Chris Vidler (work) are out while half Matt Nean has been dropped.
Group 4 will train in Tamworth on Friday night before heading south for the game.
Group 19 will train tomorrow and then wait for its turn. GROUP 19 SQUAD: 1 Mitch Porter (Inverell), 2 Brian Saunders (Moree), 3 Alistair Faulkner (Armidale), 4 Ray Paserio (Guyra), 5 Paul Quinlan (Armidale), 6 Ricky Roberts (Moree), 7 Luke Deaves (Tingha), 8 Josua Koroibulu (Guyra), 9 Travis Cook (Moree), 10 Jeremy Smith (Moree), 11 Rod Bull (Guyra), 12 Warren Cain (Moree), 13 Nick Dawson (Tingha), 14 Kialu Brown (Inverell), 15 Onisimo Tagicakibau (Guyra), 16 Alex McCosker (Inverell), 17 Brett Watts (Glen Innes), 18 Shaun Cox (Guyra), 19 Matt Munzenreider (Armidale), 20 Apakuki Mate (Guyra), 21 Ross Lewis (Glen Innes).

Wham bam, Rams slam Hawks

BEN MURPHY
02 May, 2012 04:00 AM

THE ARMIDALE Rams extended their undefeated streak to three games on Sunday after they cruised to a dominant 35-14 win over the Inverell Hawks at Rugby League Park.

A 34-all draw with Moree in round two was followed by last week’s 42-26 win against Tenterfield as the in-form Rams put a horrific 50-point first-round loss to Guyra behind them.

Despite the improved performances, the Rams saved their best display of the season so far for the Hawks as fullback Alistair Faulkner, centre Paul Quinlan and hooker Geoff Swan all bagged doubles.

Young front-rower William Whale also crossed for a try and Clarrie Moran booted five conversions to complete the rout over last year’s Group 19 premiers.

The match saw Brodie Rumsby make his first grade debut for the Ram’s while co-coach Brian Dennison returned to the field after an injury layoff.

Dennison said he was impressed with his team’s collective effort in defence against the previously undefeated Hawks.

Inverell had come into the match with back-to-back victories over fellow competition heavyweights Tingha and Glen Innes.

“I was very satisfied with our attitude defensively, players were having a go and really looking out for their team-mates,” Dennison said.

“We were a little bit nervous in the first 20 minutes and they took the lead early on through an intercept.

“But we hit back to put on 30 points by half-time, so I was a bit more relaxed for the rest of the match.”

Meanwhile, the Rams’ reserve grade side put in an inconsistent performance against the Hawks to lose 38-30.
The Rams trailed for the entire first half but a strong second period saw the Hawks’ lead cut to two points with just five minutes remaining in the match. Despite the side’s spirited comeback, Inverell held on for an eight-point win.

Chad Borger crossed twice for the Rams while Chris Schultz, Mark Khan and Dennison scored one try each.
Dennison landed five conversions from as many attempts.

In the Under 18s, the Rams had a comfortable 40-22 win over the Hawks.
The young side’s future was in doubt after they were short on player numbers in round one, but they are rapidly improving under the guidance of coach Clarrie Moran.
Sam Sewell, Navi Tiko, Steven Quinlan, Dylan Griffiths, Jordan Moran, Tekapua Heremaia all scored in the win.

Jake McFadyen kicked six from six conversions.
In the Ladies League Tag, the girls were missing key players and could not prevent Inverell from running out 36-8 winners.

Coaches player went to Alana Dunn while Kayla White was named as players’ player. The Rams’ lower grades travel to Warialda this weekend with Dennison looking to use his top side’s two-week break to improve players match fitness.

Hawks looking to bounce back following loss

PATRICK FAHY
04 May, 2012 09:47 AM
The Inverell Hawks will be out to reclaim top spot on the Group 19 ladder, when they take on the Guyra Superspuds at Varley Oval tomorrow.

An upset at the hands of Armidale last weekend, handed the Hawks their first loss of the season.

The Hawks were defeated 35-14, while Guyra moved into top spot, following a forfeit from competition strugglers Tenterfield.

In another blow for the club, captain-coach Paul Stephenson will be forced to hang up his boots, after sustaining a serious knee injury during the win against Glen Innes.
Stephenson will still continue his coaching role from the sideline, but Alex McCosker, who has deputised as skipper in recent weeks, is expected to fill the on-field role.
There was some good news however, with the ladies league tag winning their first game of the season, while reserve grade also won.

The ladies league won 36-8, with Cheyanne Munro leading the way with four tries.
Reserve grade were led by a four-try haul to Leroy Davis as they worked their way to a 38-30 victory.
Juniors were also defeated 40-22.
Guyra are undefeated in first grade, while reserves and ladies league are coming off big wins against Tenterfield, so it is expected there will be a number of hard fought contests tomorrow. Juniors will have a bye as Guyra do not have a team in the under 18s competition

Tigers beat Uralla

PATRICK FAHY
04 May, 2012 09:45 AM
Tingha scored another clean sweep in the second battle of the Tigers, against Uralla on the weekend.
While first graders have had a lack of football recently due to scheduling, reserves, juniors and ladies league all sit undefeated on top of their respective tables.
Darren Pithers and Michael Schneider both scored doubles in reserve grade, as the home side cruised to a 48-0 win.
The juniors won 26-0 with Terrence Gleeson scoring two tries, while Blake Dodd, Jayden Connors and Dalton Dettman picked up one each.
Elly Reynolds, Lawanna Boney and Candice Boggs all stared for the ladies league, during their 26-6 win.
The Tigers have a bye in all grades this week, but all teams will return to action next weekend, when they travel to Glen Innes to take on the Magpies.

G19 blitz buries rivals

14 May, 2012 04:00 AM

GROUP 19 pulled off a big upset over Hunter Valley Group 21 on Saturday on the back of a four-try effort from captain and Country Bulls rep Mitch Porter.

G21 was in the box seat to progress in the Country Tier 2 Championships heading into the game but is now out of contention, leaving Group 19 and Group 4 to fight for the Greater Northern title next Saturday.

It was a high-scoring affair at Armidale Rugby League Park on Saturday, a second half blitz from G19 turning a 28-18 deficit into a 46-40 win.

Just as he did against Group 4 last week Joel Harrison touched down for G21 first.
But Paul Quinlan took an intercept to open G19’s account soon after and then Porter scored the first of his tries when Travis Cook made a clean break through the ruck and set up his skipper.

Young fullback Seth Morgan was a late call-up to the G21 side but he scored the next try to cut G19’s lead to 12-10 and Mark Bates then put the Hunter Valley side up 16-12.

Porter’s second was a solo effort from a scrum in which he beat three tacklers on the way to the line.

The home side was back in front but only briefly as Morgan scored his double, a soft effort on the last tackle, and Dean Wendt backed that up with another after a line drop-out and Daniel Ritter being held up over the line.

That gave G21 its 28-18 halftime lead and it was on its way to the next stage of the competition.

But coach Dale Keegan must have lit a match under his side at the break because G19 was on fire early in the second half.

Porter scored his third and fourth in quick time, the third coming off a scything run from his Inverell teammate Kialu Brown and number four a close-range effort after a break from Brett Watts.

Once in front, the home side kept up the scoring through prop Josua Koroibulu two minutes later and fullback Alistair Faulkner not long after that. It was 42-28 and the one-way traffic continued when Harold Duncan leapt like an NBA basketballer to take a cross-field kick from Brown’s boot to make it 46-28.

G21 looked shot but from a mistake from the kickoff captain-coach Grant Wooden got one back for his side and Daniel Ritter scored barely two minutes later to set up a thrilling finish.

There were some nervous moments from Keegan and his men in those last few minutes but they held on for a famous victory.

“Great effort,” Keegan said.
“We were poor in the first half.
“Errors was all it was.
“We kept turning over balls.
“But Mitch Porter was outstanding, and Nick Dawson.
“The boys dug deep.

“It shows the commitment to playing for each other in Group 19 at the moment.”
Wooden said his side found G19’s little, quick men hard to handle, especially dummy halves Cook and Brown.
His side also mounted its comeback too late.
“Very disappointing,” he said.
“We might have left our changes too late, but they threw everything at us.
“They’d get that second phase and then they’d keep throwing it. “Their two hookers were very good.”
