Stay with me here. Probably be caved as its a T-Goon level idea ( he may have been the one to give me the idea actually)
I was thinking how nrl clubs don't take it all that seriously as its pretty much forced on them. Also it doesn't really mean much to the fans. The feeling when souths won the comp to when we lost all 3 games this year wasn't much different. It's was a kinda 'well that was cool' feeling. Also the comp struggles to attract stars. Even though they aren't always the best players people want to see the stars. But there's not much incentive for the stars to play except glory, and the 9s isn't really that much respected compared to a premiership or rep footy.
So why don't we open the 9s to bids from teams independent of the nrl. Maybe international teams like samoa or fiji will place a bid. Because it's not a full international they can try lure guys like Hayne, Milford and Papalli. Maybe the indigenous team will place a bid and tie it into allstars week. Maybe qld or nsw will enter a team, mixed with origin, emerging squad and future players. Maybe an nrl team like the Cowboys will try do it with a 1st grade squad again. Possibly corporate teams may be made. For example Nike or Adidas could form teams with sponsored players playing together. Maybe chuck appearance fees to lure players to their team. Maybe $50k for the weekend for a cronk or boyd. Maybe XXXX would put together a qld legends/young guns team.
The biggest obstacle will be for nrl clubs to release players, but maybe that can be factored into contracts. Maybe an nrl club can beat off rival clubs for players by allowing their players to earn extra money at the 9s. Maybe a huge offer to a player can exclude him from playing 9s. Maybe players that are available for 9s still decline to focus on the season ahead or to beat injuries and maybe excluded players can make the case for letting their club release them for the weekend.
All just brainstorming for now.

For the two teams that make the final they are playing 4 times in one day. I've wondered if you could play it over 3 days with one round on Friday night then two games on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. To pad out the Sunday (or Saturday) events the competition could be increased to say 20 teams and add a Fiji national, QLD/NSW Cup winners or combined team from the two comps and another team from either the SL in the U.K. or an invitation 2nd tier nation that has qualified for the upcoming WC.

First of all - good understanding of a problem and why it needs addressing. Of all your ideas, I think you got something here with your part of the post above. Rewards, its got to have a good incentive for clubs to want to win the thing. Im going to branch off your idea and get creative here and say, why not allow the winners of the nines the ability to breach the salary cap by a $500k to a mill as the reward for winnin it. Or maybe some other reward but its got to appeal to the club as well. Defintely need to review the rewards for teams to win.

I don't know if it needs a radical overhaul. To me, it is a perfect pre-season tournament, it doesn't leave you shattered when your team lose but at the same time I was really hoping to see the Cowboys become the first ever 2 time champions and was disappointed when they got knocked out.

I'm not a fan of mix & matching International and club teams. I would have annually an NRL 9's at the start of the year, Super League 9's mid-season (Euro Summer) and International 9's post season before the major international tournaments start.

All of which need to be spread around though to keep it fresh.

NRL nines could be spread between Auckland, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and maybe Internationally to Asia, South Africa, Hawaii etc.

SL nines to London, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain etc.

International 9's to anywhere and everywhere. North America are apparently keen to host a few of these in the lead up to the 2025 World Cup.

Maybe one day the 9's will be the new Super League independent of the NRL and Jabba would have to poach from its players to complete his 6/7/8/+ year plan . . . wonder would the 9's SL pay like 20/20

Why would Jabba poach? His boys did alright.

Merely hypothetical ol' mate, Jabba and every other club would try and poach from a successful 9's parallel comp, just as they would from State Cup comps . . . I only mentioned Jabba to attract a Penrith nibble, you are the wrong one

I'm surprised I'm the only one. Ha ha. Such tempting bait.
I know you aren't a big fan of the great man, but you have to admit that he is delivering on his promises. Bear in mind that he never said anything about a "5 year plan" that was Rothfield running with Gus saying it would take 5 years to fix the club given the state he found it in.

NRL have announced that Indonesia has taken over the hosting rights from Auckland for 2018.

"The Bali Nines".

The winning team receives $10k of heroin for each player, and is awarded the Andrew Chan Memorial Cup.

All club jerseys will feature designs based on the artworks of Myuran Sukumaran.

Renee Lawrence will be granted day leave from Kerobokan Prison to sing the national anthem before the Nines Grand Final.

RFL teasing on Facebook that they are reviewing the season to see if they can fit in a SL Nines somewhere.
UK Uni's launching their nines tournament
WA will host its first Harmony Nines in a couple of weeks
Singapore uses nine format for its domestic league
Thailand invitational nines on this year

Nines is going great guns!

The three Fijian RU7's gold medal winners who are considering defecting to League sound interesting . . . would they have been noticed without the 7's and how many more would be found if Fiji played in the 9's

I think its a reasonable idea to let the winning team blow the cap by half a mil the following year, teams would get serious then.... maybe everyone except broncos, roosters, parra, dogs melbourne etc, cap dont really apply to them, but at least the poor teams that the rules apply to will be in with a chance!

I thought of this a few days ago.

The NRL and the World Rugby Union could get together and have, from a Thursday to Sunday, both codes holding their respective 9's and 7's tournaments held at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney.

Start it off by having two games of Rugby (Or vice versa), then alternatively, two games of League, then two games of Rugby, then League, etc.

The benefit of this will be more exposure for both codes, and a 100% certainty of a packed crowds, more games and more potential for advertising.

Both codes could at least experiment just for the one year just to see how the public responds.

Expand NRL to 20 teams, play 19 rounds plus top 8 finals series. Frees up 7 weeks from current schedule to play a 3 week Nines Series during March, and standalone Origin series during June.

More on the Nines Series to come...

Get rid of WCC and expand nrl pre season nines to a world club challenge nines. 16 nrl clubs plus Catalans and three invitational SL clubs. Include Toronto as well if they come good.

Would make it easy to decide when to go and get a beer or take a leak!

Here's a great idea. f**k the whole thing off. f**k off the All Stars game while we're at it too.

In fact, f**k off State of Origin too. Unless it can grow beyond the two state format it's a relic of the past.

We should be seeing the best players in the regular season, week in, week out. Teams shouldn't be gifted the opportunity to play teams with half their players missing through representative duties. Fans shouldn't have to put up with three rounds of only half the teams playing.
