Stay with me here. Probably be caved as its a T-Goon level idea ( he may have been the one to give me the idea actually)
I was thinking how nrl clubs don't take it all that seriously as its pretty much forced on them. Also it doesn't really mean much to the fans. The feeling when souths won the comp to when we lost all 3 games this year wasn't much different. It's was a kinda 'well that was cool' feeling. Also the comp struggles to attract stars. Even though they aren't always the best players people want to see the stars. But there's not much incentive for the stars to play except glory, and the 9s isn't really that much respected compared to a premiership or rep footy.
So why don't we open the 9s to bids from teams independent of the nrl. Maybe international teams like samoa or fiji will place a bid. Because it's not a full international they can try lure guys like Hayne, Milford and Papalli. Maybe the indigenous team will place a bid and tie it into allstars week. Maybe qld or nsw will enter a team, mixed with origin, emerging squad and future players. Maybe an nrl team like the Cowboys will try do it with a 1st grade squad again. Possibly corporate teams may be made. For example Nike or Adidas could form teams with sponsored players playing together. Maybe chuck appearance fees to lure players to their team. Maybe $50k for the weekend for a cronk or boyd. Maybe XXXX would put together a qld legends/young guns team.
The biggest obstacle will be for nrl clubs to release players, but maybe that can be factored into contracts. Maybe an nrl club can beat off rival clubs for players by allowing their players to earn extra money at the 9s. Maybe a huge offer to a player can exclude him from playing 9s. Maybe players that are available for 9s still decline to focus on the season ahead or to beat injuries and maybe excluded players can make the case for letting their club release them for the weekend.
All just brainstorming for now.
