Amazes me how much money and media covg cricket gets! It never rates highly on TV and no one is at the grounds watching the game for either domestic or Int games (unless it is a big one like the Ashes) yet it gets wall to wall coverage!

Summer = no NRL or AFL
Played everywhere in the country.

And have you seen the shows commercial networks put on during the summer. Give me a test match over that shit any day of the week. (if i didnt have fox or knew how to download TV shows.)

Test Matches and One Dayers fill a lot of space as well in a schedule. The cost per minute of airing it is probably way below most sports. Also at it spans several hours a day it has a huge potential reach.

I heard that the average game of cricket rates around 800,000-1.2 million viewers, with a 1.5 million peak.

There was a poster on here that posted it first. Ask them.

I think I might have been that person.

Cricket rates well, particularly T20. Here are the figures for day 4 of the 1st Test.

http://www.tvcentral.com.au/2011/12/05/sunday-4th-december-2011/

730k average throughout the day. 650k for the Cricket Show. Not bad for NZ. They dont have TV ratings for days 1-3, 5, so we'll have to wait. I suspect India tour will start hitting close to a million. And then with ODI's and T20. Nine do fairly well in summer. Cricket and 2 weeks of tennis are the only big draws in the NRL off season.

Yeah, good figures. The other thing that makes cricket so lucrative is the lead in to news. I know its non ratings period but that counts for alot still

One of the reasons cricket gets so much coverage is that it is a sport played nationwide.

The reason why channel 9 love it is that they can get at least 90 commercials a day in. Compare the viewer figures watching cricket, as well the demographic watching it, to that watching what's normally on (days of our lives etc) and you'll get your answer why it's one of nine's most treasured assets.

You've gotta remember that a lot of people are still at work as well. Boxing day test should rate through the roof

Only show of note during the 'non-ratings' period and regular ads (every over) allows Nein to clean up over summer when there is absolutely f**k all else on for a start.

Plus it's a truely nationwide event, and it is a sport with probably less avid followers than NRL or AFL but alot of people who will tune in and out of the match.

Plus test cricket is f**king awesome

730k for a sunday for the first session against the sheep f**kers, not bad for a product that doesn't rate  even The Cricket Show rated 640k. Perth Red stays getting sonned.

Test cricket > rugby league

I think he is thinking from an "English" perspective.

Fair dinkum I was shocked living in England how little coverage cricket gets (except when beating us of course).

Its a bit like League in NZ, it certainly has a presence and people know of it, but its not an "everyday" news item like football (soccer) is.

Its not shown on free to air live in any capacity (even the Ashes the only coverage was a hour or so highlights package at the end of the days play.
