Ah yes the 94 Kangaroo tour. I remember the absolute shock when the team was named and David Furner and Jason Croker were omitted on favour of Manly players. I'm not talking shock by Canberra fans, I mean everyone involved in the game. Well, almost everyone.

What the? David Furner did not miss out on the 1994 Roo tour! In fact he played in the first test and missed a sideline conversion after a Renouf try in the corner. And you call yourself a raiders fan?
Canberra had SEVEN players on the tour

Clyde
Walters
Daley
Meninga
Mullins
Furner
Stuart

Was seven not enough? Sure Croker was robbed, but his place was taken by Greg Florimo and i dont think that was unjustifed considering the season he had in 1994

Anyone on here whos says it is anything different than pay TV has no idea about anything, you can rant all you want about clubs this, clubs that, but it just shows all the personal biasness from the posters.

This is the fact and nothing else makes a sceric of difference. In every country that News went into with pay TV they needed a driver to push subscriptions, they bought the NFL in USA,Soccer in England and needed League in Aus,when packer refused and sided with optus the result was superleague END of STORY.

As far as arko and quayle the results speak for themselves, highest ratings, highest crowds, record sponsorship, expansion sides comming in and the no1 code in australia.
the whole war was pay tv and nothing else.

You'll get no argument from me! It's just a great shame the ARL couldn't have worked with News Ltd and got a massive deal for the Pay Tv rights back then. if they had been able to, one can only imagine where RL would be at now in Australia.
The way I look on it, I'd say it was a great shame that News Ltd couldn't work with the ARL, to their mutual benefits...

Looking back, and it pains me to say it, but the Cowboys weren't ready to be admitted in 95, the ARL should have waited another few years. 2 Teams (Auckland obviously and either Perth or the Crushers, should have been the intial expansion.)
Unfortunately (and ironically), it was only the pressure of the Super League idea in the background - including rugby league club administrators like Peter Moore, who were acting "undercover" for Super League at the highest levels of the ARL before they declared their hands - that forced the ARL to expand faster, to satisfy the lack of patience and greed for instant (payTV) results.

Where was Packers money back then?

It was with Manly - that's where!!!

This is the truth.
Manly were funded by Packer. When you look at how they raped and pillaged clubs like Norths and Wests with packer's funding, theur overall performance was crap. They should have won 20 premierships in a row.

ARL lifeline conditional
A document dated 11 April 1995 summarised "deal terms" between the League and ARL and Channel Nine/Optus Vision. This provided for Channel Nine/Optus Vision to fund player contract commitments up to $40 million (This later grew to $93M plus a further $33M). The League and ARL were not to change the competition, format and frequency of the competition in a materially adverse way without the consent of Channel Nine/Optus Vision. The rights period under existing television agreements were to be extended for a further five years, with Channel Nine/Optus Vision to have a first and last right of refusal. Channel Nine/Optus Vision's funding commitment was non-recoupable, except as follows:
a) If the League and ARL agreed, it could be recouped over time out of fees received for television rights; b) It could be recouped out of monies received by the League and ARL for assignment of player contracts; c) The commitment could be used as a set-off against the cost of exercising the right of refusal for renewal of the television rights agreement.

The reason why the last tv rights never went to a proper tendering process

Broadcasting Rights
In 1998 Packer's Nine Network secured the free-to-air broadcasting rights for the NRL until 2007 for $13,000,000 a year. In 2001 C7 unsuccessfully attempted to buy the pay television NRL rights until 2006 for $72,000,000 per annum. After News resigned these rights, and acquired the AFL broadcast rights, C7 was shut down in March 2002 , leaving Fox Sports as the only Australian pay television sports network. As a result of the failure of C7, its owners commenced legal proceedings against parties, including Fox Sports, Foxtel and the NRL Partnership, for damages of $1 billion. This matter is still before the courts. [4]
The free to air rights were renewed in 2005 until 2012 for an amount of $40,000,000 a year. [5]

$13m a season kerry was generous
Pay tv rights of $72m per annum would have been nice
