Storm expect to be cap compliant in 2011

Melbourne Storm CEO Ron Gauci today announced the club had submitted its playing roster to the NRL for the 2011 season.

The Storm expect to be salary cap compliant in 2011, Gauci said, after the club agreed this morning to release Brett White and Greg Inglis from their existing contracts at the end of the current season.

“We have undergone a thorough and transparent process that was always designed to ensure that we meet our salary cap obligations for 2011,” Gauci said today.

“This process has considered all matters, including our commercial position, the players’ needs and preferences, as well as our on-field team balance.

“As a result of that thorough and transparent process we anticipate that we will receive NRL sign off once the club’s final salary cap audit is completed.”

Gauci said there would be no further premature player departure announcements this season.

There would, however, be a number of signings to be announced in the coming days, Gauci confirmed.

“We’ve supported those players who have made the difficult decision to further their careers at other clubs, both in Australia and overseas,” Gauci said.

“We’re pleased that we were able to have been part of their decision making process.

“The impact of these decisions is that the club will be able to retain a number of players who were off-contract at the end of this year as well as re-enter the player market to replace those that are leaving.

“We expect to be in a position where we will be able to make an announcement on this shortly.”

Gauci pointed to Storm head coach, Craig Bellamy, and the culture that has been cultivated within the club’s football department, as reasons why the team would remain competitive in 2011.

Gauci also had a message for all Storm members and supporters, saying: “We choose not to dwell on the issues of the past, but rather learn from them, and use them as motivation to successfully challenge for our next premiership.

“We can’t change the past but we can build a winning future and that is exactly what we intend to do.”

Given the club’s international contingent of Cameron Smith, Adam Blair, Billy Slater, Sika Manu, Cooper Cronk and Gareth Widdop, as well as its promising crop of young players, Gauci said the Storm would be more than competitive in 2011.

Gauci was joined by Storm coach, Craig Bellamy, in publicly thanking the Storm’s departing players for the lasting contributions they have made at the club.

“The legacy that all of our players who are leaving this club have made on the Melbourne Storm won’t be lost on those still remaining any time soon,” said Bellamy.

“We’re sad to see them go and they’re sad to be going.”

Now Inglis has signed with the Broncos (who would have thought :sarcasm:) there is no way Cronk will be coming. It sucks but we can't do anything about it. Might as well spend less than the cap next year than buy players for the hell of it - assuming there is nothing yet to be announced.

It's ironic isn't it, that the NRL's major RL one city team (Brisbane), can go ahead and purchase the world's best player, from a club (Melbourne), that's owned by the same mob yet, the rest of the teams only get offered the scraps from the cheaters.

I cannot wait, until News Limited are out of the game.
f**k them.
In the mean time, we get royally screwed in our attempts to buy the least paid of the super 4.
One would only have to seriously contest that the Broncos are abiding by the salary cap rules as well. Obviously, we've all thought this for years, but surely it must be ringing warning bells somewhere amongst the heirachy?

So which players are leaving? The paper says they are keeping that list of stars in the article, but the guy doesn't actually mention who is staying.......
I'm confused, they've finalised their team list, and people are leaving the guy has confirmed, but who?
Cronk is ruled out obviously, but it doesn't seem to say whether all those players mentioned are definitely staying or not.....I mean, the article says a "number" of signings to be announced in the coming days, and the article mentions pretty much Melbourne's whole team as people they are keeping, so who the hell is leaving?

I perfectly agree with Suity here....
But hell, even if they had the 17 best players in the world in their team, it wouldn't matter; they've got a sh*t coach!
