Cronulla's generation next ready to step up in 2012
14/10/2011 10:00:00 AM
The Sharks have a huge junior base to choose from and with the NYC team doing so well in 2011 there will be plenty of players following Chad Townsend and Stewart Mills into first grade in the years to come.
But who could make the step up to the top grade in 2012? And why would they be a wise choice for first grade coach Shane Flanagan?
We examine the chances of two players who could make the leap into the top grade.
Tyrone Peachey
The nephew of iconic Sharks fullback David, Tyrone has played plenty of Toyota Cup over the last two seasons and has been instrumental in the Sharks’ Toyota Cup ascent.
Capable of playing in the back row, or as a centre or five eighth Peachey will bring some fancy footwork and ball-playing skills to the first grade squad if given the opportunity in 2012.
However with the depth of the Cronulla back row including Paul Gallen, Jeremy Smith and Anthony Tupou, gaining a starting spot may prove tough and Peachey may have to earn his spot from the bench or the NSW Cup, having said that he is one player to look out for in the future.
Callum Tutauha
With 11 tries in the 2011 NYC campaign Tutauha has shown plenty that he can get it done in both attack and defence and that he also has the pace to be a threat at any level.
The centre has two seasons of NYC behind him and will be looking to make his mark properly in 2012.
It won’t be easy though. Colin Best and Ben Pomeroy are established centres at the Sharks.
Add to that, that Stewart Mills and Matthew Wright have already tasted first grade and Tutauha has quite a few players in front of him.
However both Pomeroy and Best are in the latter stages of their careers and with Dean Collis leaving the club it opens up an opportunity for Tutauha to make his mark in NSW Cup, and if he does that then he could taste NRL footy sooner than later.
