Crowd Attendances

Hello all. I'm in my last year in college and i have a major promotions assessment where i have to promote a rugby league club and i chose the parramatta eels. My main objective will be to increase crowd attendances to parramatta home games, and i will be analyzing many stratergies that will help boost crowd attendences and the sales for our merchandice. This will then be sent to the club. Some ideas i have so far include:

* Introducing a variety of new half time entertainment acitivities. Perhaps the winner of a particular activity may get to spend a day with an eels player.
* The fan days seem to be a big success, perhaps having an extra fan day per year will get the kids involved and closer to the game.
* For certain games kids 16 or under get in for free. A few weeks ago for the Sydney Roosters home game this was trialed and it was a success. The kids were also aloud to run onto the field at the end of the game and it was a great sight.

Now obviously crowd attendences are particularly influenced by the teams performance, however there are many different initiatives our club can use that will increase our attendances. In many different threads ragarding the revenue of our club there seem to be some ideas. If anybody has suggestions it would be muchly appreciated.

There are so many Idea's.

Can I just say something about the promotions you mentioned.

Not to many people give a rats arse about the Half time promotion. Honestly we just don't care. We are there to watch football. Having the Under 7s on the Pitch is great as it gives them a thrill, and the cheer leaders doing a routine is at least something to listen to during the break. I cringe at most of the half time promotions, the compares are often to loud and repeat themselves ad nauseam. Case in point was the Milly Lopez thing last week. Now, Great cause, I dip my cap to Holic and the others that purchased things in the Auction, but over 4 times the guy spoke about how great it was to have Milly here and that it was only the 2nd time in her life she had been outside. It was her birthday coming up. Over and Over and Over, and all while in the rain on the coldest night of football Parramatta Stadium has experienced in a while. I may be over-reacting here but was he trying to kill her?

Fan days, if we could get one, we would be happy, but I guess we will see what happens next year.

The Under 16s promotion, to a cracking game 1st vs 3rd got 20,000 to the SFS on a decent winters afternoon. So I don't know if I would call it particularly successful. That people were allowed on the field, was a great image once, but the only places they allow this all the time, don't have multiple tenants with multiple events and their pitches aren't much to write home about and haven't been for over 15 years (I speak of Brookvale which is a Cow paddock, and multiple players and trainers from multiple generations have spoken about how heavy underfoot the venue is) I have been to Parramatta stadium, for 11 years straight as a season ticket holder, I have stood on the Hallowed turf twice. Once was after the 2001 Grand Final. While it would be nice to not be almost shoved out of the seating be security, I don't want to see people running onto the pitch.

But as you said the best way to promote a game at Parramatta seems to be get the side playing well, and play it on a Sunny Sunday afternoon. That normally packs them out.

This link might help you analysis our crowd records in reference to how the side is performing.

- discounted entry to season ticket holders of opposition teams
- free general admin entry to parra footy club members
- post match functions for fans
- live broadcast blackouts in nsw if 3/4 of available match tickets aren't sold 24 hours before the game
- bulk ticket purchases
- bigger drive/incentives to sell season tickets
- a denis fitzgerald dunktank http://thedunktank.com/v.php?id=85ad666a54ea694f50879f2d17d23e47
- promotional days much like the bulldogs did years ago with mothers day, fathers day, family day, multicultural day, easter, etc...
- use leagues club promos to get people there
- a system similar to the afl where footy club members of any club get in for a low price in general admin (at the mcg and telstra i am pretty sure footy club members get in free)
- and winning games or at least being competitive tends to help too.

Sorry I just want to confirm this one. So Regardless of if we are playing on 9 or Fox, if we having sold 75% of our tickets, we don't get on TV?

we don't get on live tv. league is one of the best tv sports around. many people wont go to a game for the reason they can watch it live on tele.

So in the current TV contract. We only get to Play on Saturday Nights 7:30pm (9:30 pm delayed telecast) or if we do Jag a Friday Night we have to be the 9:30 delayed game, by our own request?

Even if we do that we can't get the 7:30 live game in Brisbane as they have a contract which states that a Queensland team is always on a 7:30 pm live.

Would you also disable the Viewers Choice mode on Foxtel Digital to ensure people got out to the game?

have a day where white anglo-saxons get in free .... oh hang on - some ppl might find this racist (as opposed to polynesian day)

but on a serious note .... match day entertainment needs a massive boost - i think making the day more than just a footy game would help get "extras" to the game - by extras I mean ppl who would go along with the person who actually wants to go to see a footy game (eg a girlfriend/boyfriend/relative/etc)

I remember last year we trialed our new American style cheer squad team. We were the only team in the NRL to do so and it was something unique. I'm sure many people thought they were quite entertaining, especially the younger kids and the women who aren't particularly interested in watching the cheer squad dance around almost every half time break. Maybe we can try something similar for next year and try to bring in another unique entertainment act, maybe something similar to what the Rabbitohs have with their drum players.

I think you will find that the Rabbitohs Ditched the Drum Players this year.

Seriously Mark, these are just suggestions and ideas that dont really need to be analysed down to the 'enth degree.

It is a valid point that live TV takes away from the crowd and the no live unless a threshold of tix sold is a fair thought.

I think there were a few reasons for the demise. I think a few Cheerleaders left (the blokes as well as some girls). It also appears that the Routines got a little Stale.

Sure they are just suggestions. But I am asking how they could be translated into actual effect. Do you think Nine and Fox who pay an approximate 1/4 of our way each year would be happy to accommodate this?

Even in brainstorming sessions it is good to know the limits of what is possible or even what is probable.

The biggest impediment to the attendance of Rugby League is the prohibitive cost to working Australians.

Now I have no research if that is true or not, but lets say we slash the ticket costs in half. We will get more people to the game. I don't know if we will make a profit, but we will play in front of packed houses.

I don't have time to write down ideas currently, I'll try and back to you though. I would like to commend you on choosing Parramatta games and crowds as a topic for a university assignment, it sounds very interesting.

can't see why the tv thing wouldn't help. they do it in the afl and their crap crowds beat most of our good ones.

slashing ticket prices may reduce gate revenue but the revenue from food & bev as well as merchandise in theory should go up. sponsorship $$$ should increase as well.

I think AFL crowds revolve more around the membership push that the AFL have been on for over 20 years more than TV.

I say slash the food prices as well. A Normal chain Restaurant can sell a carton of chips for $3.25 and have them of a far greater quality and quantity to our stalls, who charge $4.50 for a cup of chips.

Merch, well as I have said for a while we make only a sellers commission on that. The rest goes back to the NRL and we get some of that back via the Club grant.

I would love it if we could have the same atmosphere as the EPL. Apparently tickets are sold out well in advance and it's practically impossible to get in. Also from what I've seen on TV, EPL games don't have too much in the way of half time shows, som ebloke over the loud speaker trying to hype the crowd up etc. I may be wrong, please correct me if I am, but generally the crowd are the entertainment with all the singing etc. I guess patriotism and a 50'000 people who share your passion will always make for a great day out.
