we get smashed in the crowds compared to the afl

apples and oranges. two different sports with vastly different cultures of attendance, its always been that way and there is no point in worrying about it. As long as the NRL keeps improving and the trend has been upward for 30 years i don't care about afl attendance

True, but AFL has a very different culture to league. As long as crowds keep growing, both at the game and on TV, the comparison is meaningless.

That said, the NRL should look outside itself for ideas about how to improve attendance, in the same way that the AFL looks to the NFL.

I really detest this sort of attitude - as if the current administrators have been somehow responsible for the current dire straits rugby league (in particular the NRL) is in...

If the NRL is in such a bad position under this administration (and I'm not suggesting they're perfect), then why are memberships and crowds steadily rising? Why are we on the cusp of a (hopefully) historic TV deal?

As it stands every club (bar Manly, I think - not sure the current Quantum/Penn deal actually contributes much in the way of "sponsorship") has a front of jersey sponsor, sleeve sponsor and most have plenty of corporate support - and only one club looks to be in any significant financial trouble.

There's lots to do and plenty of shit the current administrators need to get right but I'd be stunned if Gallop and Co. weren't in the top five of the best administrations we've ever had in this game.
Detest is a bit harsh isn't it?

Perhaps the current lot are hamstrung by the ownership structure of the game and maybe they do a reasonable job under the circumstances.

Not sure on some of your points though....Crowds have risen slightly in the last 2 years but are relatively stagnant from about 2005 - see below:

http://stats.rleague.com/rl/crowds/summary.html

Memberships??? Well it's about time and the NRL only "reacted" once the pokie tax in NSW started taking effect (they didn't seem to realiae the impact this would have until it actually hit, despite have 3-4 years warning). I would like to know why they are also so silent on this matter.

Historic TV deal? Well, they should have signed something of this nature last time the rights were up.....I'll grant you that the ownership issues I mention above contribute to this but for Gallop and Co. to sit there and justify why the value of our rights are lower than the AFL's (expecially the pay TV rights where we simply flog them in ratings) is beyond belief.

Rugby League stand's tall like Aussie Rules in Australia as they have there own contribution to Australian sport.
Aussie Rules never had massive crowds for real internationals but Rugby League did between the 1920's to early 1970's.
Getting sick of all this cross code shit and not a fan of AFL but maybe if we don't bag it off things might look better for Rugby League.

So Souths are almost 1000 down on last years crowd and have played all their blockbuster games bar the Roosters, which has been shafted to 5:30pm kickoff?

Interesting.

Interesting.

They've still got the Broncos in Perth (which should draw close to whatever the capacity is over there) and Parramatta in Rd 21.

Those stats are interesting. The Bulldogs crowd averages have increased quite dramatically over the last decade since they moved back to ANZ Stadium. They're not far behind the Broncos average.

From a Knights' fan perspective, I'm reasonably happy with that average. It's a shame we have to play LOL@50uff$ as our last home game, which could impact on the crowd for that game. However, in saying that, I believe our highest drawing game in 2008 was against 50ouff$. We have 2 big games left that could significantly bolster our average: one vs Manly on Sunday (which could get 25000+ if the weather remains good and the Knights form improves) and the other vs Broncos in Rd 24 (we normally always draw good crowds against them). The Knights should definitely be aiming for 20000+ for both of those games. Hopefully with improved performances from the Knights next year and the stadium development finished this year, we should be aiming for 20000+ averages next year.

The Manly and Bulldogs average includes the 32k they got in Brisbane for the double header (not split up into two games).

Manly's average at Brookvale is 10,634.
Canterbury's average is still very impressive excluding that match at 25,393.

I have the dogs at 23,416 and thats with NO input from the suncorp game at all. So thats still quite impressive. I have manly at 11,108 again same story NO suncorp, but i expect that will rise to just under 13k by seasons end.

Why don't Manly shift 1 maybe 2 at a push to the SFS every year. Its not exactly a million miles away and give their fans a chance to enjoy a proper stadium. It could maximise the crowd for a game against a big sydney club and boost the coffers
