Considering how much they are charging for tickets for the games in NSW and QLD this year the NRL will want to have secured a damned massive deal with the MCG to play the game there or else they'll be taking a massive bath on the game, even if it sells out.

Not expecting big things tonight. Mondays are f**ked. Maybe 15k.

IF that. My sister and her husband can't make it tonight because of work commitments. Tried to entice a few people to come for free, great seats on the halfway line and all I got was "At Homebush" or "Too much hassle, I'll watch it on TV" and "I'd come if it was on a saturday/sunday" but not tonight. Just shows the VALUE of an average rugby league game on a Monday night

I would never EVER attend a game of league at the MCG. Its crap enough at the SCG, and that is a damn site smaller.

People complain about the top tier of ANZ being too far from the action.... the MCG would have roughly 50,000 seats further away than that, if not more.
I watched Liverpool from up high on the wing at the MCG last year, wasn't too bad. You get a bit more elevation than the SCG I think.

I watched the Boxing Day test from the top tier about 4 rows from the back, frankly it was pretty shit, its really on the "atmosphere" your going for up there.

All these comments suggest it is a mistake to have Origin played regularly in Melbourne (regularly as in every three years). If the neutral game was shifted around between different cities, it would have much more novelty factor to attract higher attendances. Say something like:
- 2015 - Auckland
- 2018 - Melbourne
- 2021 - Perth
- 2024 - somewhere in Asia,

You'd have much more chance of shifting tickets at decent prices. You'd also benefit from exposing the game in more regions.

Yeah I liked the idea of shifting the next neutral game after 2015 to somewhere different, Perth or Auckland or something.

Excepting that fact, that Perth and Auckland don't have a venue greater than 50K like Melbourne does (ironically based on my previous posts).

FYI it is just a "neutral" venue, Melbourne ISN'T locked into the Origin cycle. So I assume Melbourne bid the most for the event.

If the NRL were smart, stay with me!, they would be getting a partnership with qantas and a few hotels and offering a good deal weekend package to fans in nsw and qland and Perth. I reckon you could get 20k plus travel for it if done well.

New Perth stadium opens 2018, 60k+ capacity. Good opportunity to put SOO in Perth.

Yep, will be around 65k and getting more high profile rectangular games will convince the wa govt to sign off on the retractable stands. The NRL should be on the blower to Barnett now talking about RLWC in 2018 and SOO in 2019 and Pirates admission in 2017!

I can't wait until the MCG origin game.

The vibe in 2006, 2009 and 2012 was fantastic, I had a great time. Eclipsing any ANZ experience, similarly to Brisbane you get to walk to the Stadium from cool areas.

Level Q at MCG is fine.

I agree.

Its a good move shifting the game from Etihad to MCG. You ask a lot of Victorians and they would prefer the MCG over Etihad.

But only downside would be the seating would be further from the action than Etihad.

Origin is now more popular nationwide than what it was 10 years ago, infact it hasnt been this popular in Melbourne since 1994, pre Super League.

If they took a game to Perth and play it at Subiaco or Patersons whatever they call it now, they go close to selling it out.

Etihad is crap

Unless the tickets about 50% of the tickets are $40 and lower Im not so confident.

I have lived in Melbourne since 2009 and have been to both Origins at Etihad in that time, in both cases its been possible to get tickets within days of leading up to those matches. And that was for very reasonable prices.

Yeah, I remember a couple of extra mates came down with us on a whim and got standing room tickets.

I also remember them running out of beer before halftime.

Today's announcement was MCG for both 2015 AND 2018.

Perth or Auckland will need to wait til 2021 if they want something.
