Bromance crumbles
THEIR'S was a budding ''bromance'': the Oscar-winning actor and his eccentric multimillionaire property developer chum.
In 2007 Russell Crowe and Albert Bertini looked as though they could conquer the world.
The only problem was, someone forgot to tell the world.
Since those heady days relations between Bertini and Crowe have cooled significantly, friends informing PS the actor was not happy about Bertini, who appeared on Crowe's Secret Millionaire TV show, being constantly described as one his ''best mates''.
Central to the rumoured falling out has been the ongoing saga surrounding the $40 million redevelopment of Crowe's beloved Rabbitohs' heartland in Redfern, the new leagues club that is now four years behind schedule - a project that was to have been built by Bertini's company Trivest.
Last week Rabbitohs' management plastered signs on the Chalmers Street building making it clear Bertini's company was no longer working on the club. This week Rabbitohs' players were on site, working with a new builder as they aim to open the doors early in 2012.
Bertini did not return PS's calls this week but the flamboyant tycoon ( who told The Sun-Herald in September he was so ''hot'' it threatened other men) has been busy making changes in his own domain, having recently wed his 24-year-old girlfriend Renee, who is believed to be the 49-year-old's fifth wife. His York Street corporate headquarters, more like a glitzy youth hostel cum nightclub complete with a disco dance floor, cocktail bar, giant crucifix and bowling alley, is for sale, along with the Mosman mansion, Karawa, he paid $22.5 million for in 2008.
Industry observers say he will be lucky to get his money back.
Bertini had grand plans for the Mosman property, including installing a $1 million James Bond-style subterranean elevator so he could conveniently get to his yacht, formerly owned by the Kennedy family.
In August Bertini was reportedly ''shocked'' when Strike Force Raptor officers called him as they raided one of his properties, a former factory in Alexandria that was being used as a headquarters by the Hells Angels. It was subsequently shut down. Bertini has said he was not aware a Hells Angels clubhouse was operating inside the property.
