Cup tying

What is the purpose of cup tying? Is it simply so that clubs can't buy a player to help them do well in the cup? If so, it seems a bit pointless when you look at the biggies like Chelsea who have basically bought the premiership through Abramovic.

What if you are really badly hit by injuries, shouldn't you be able to buy them for the express purpose of remaining competitive? I guess it would probably come down to a thing of where do you draw the line? Anyway, that's all from me for the minute :D

Never really thought about that...

Not sure how many deals it effects, but every now and then you hear of a team chasing a guy that is 'cup tied'.

It would be interesting to know why exactly they have it.

If a player could play for multiple teams in a competition in the same season then all sorts of deals could and probably would be made to try and disadvantage opponents to create an advantage for your own team. Chelsea could simply loan out their second team to a side playing one of their rivals to make their future draw easier.
