Cutler Trade Wish Granted

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - The Denver Broncos said Tuesday that they will grant Jay Cutler his request and try to trade him.

There is no shortage of teams interested in the 25-year-old rocket-armed quarterback, whose unhappy offseason began with Mike Shanahan's firing and has haunted new coach Josh McDaniels' budding regime.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen released a statement saying both he and McDaniels had been unable to get Cutler to call them back over the last 10 days. Bowlen said he spoke with Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, on Tuesday and came away convinced "that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos."

Therefore, Bowlen said, "We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."

Cook didn't immediately return messages left by The Associated Press, and McDaniels, through a team spokesman, declined to comment.

Cutler has been unhappy ever since learning that McDaniels failed to inform him about trade talks in which the Broncos showed interest in Matt Cassel, whom the coach tutored in New England. Cassel wound up being traded by the Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs, and then Cutler asked to be traded.

Still, McDaniels had faith that he could repair the strained relationship with his temperamental quarterback -- if only he could get Cutler to call him back. On Tuesday, McDaniels became convinced that just wasn't going to happen.

When told the owner was going to try to trade the team's franchise quarterback, linebacker Spencer Larsen said: "It's shocking. It didn't seem like he was going anywhere. This is the worst-case scenario."

Cutler skipped McDaniels' first team meeting in mid-March and the first two weeks of the Broncos' offseason conditioning program, forfeiting a $100,000 workout bonus.

Cutler is halfway through the six-year, $48 million contract he signed as the 11th overall pick out of Vanderbilt in the 2006 draft. He's 17-20 as the Broncos' starter, although that's misleading because of Denver's dismal defense.

In games that the Broncos have allowed 21 points or fewer, Cutler is an impressive 13-1, and that only loss was to Green Bay in 2007 when the Packers won the coin toss and Brett Favre threw an 82-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime.

Cutler was upset when Shanahan was fired as coach and even requested that members of Shanahan's offensive staff be retained, which didn't happen.

Cutler had started to come around, meeting several times with McDaniels and expressing an eagerness to learn his intricate Patriots-style attack that will replace the West Coast system the quarterback has run since he was a rookie.

But that all changed when word leaked that McDaniels had spoken with the Patriots about Cassel.
At the NFL Annual Meeting in Southern California last week, McDaniels said the team was committed to Cutler, although he said no options, including trades, were being ruled out.
"I've always been optimistic," McDaniels said. "He's on our team, he's under contract, and I understand there's things we have to work toward in our relationship."

McDaniels, 32, is in his first head-coaching job after serving as offensive coordinator for New England, where he developed the untested Cassel into a top quarterback in 2008. McDaniels has never denied that "conversations took place" about acquiring Cassel, nor does he apologize for them.
"You take into consideration what anybody is trying to offer up,"

McDaniels said. "If the quality of the trade you feel, in the long run, improves your team, you analyze it.
"It's been made very clear to me it's my job to listen to a number of scenarios that would improve the team."

McDaniels even had fun with the feud last week, smiling as he posed for pictures at the NFL meeting with Cutler's No. 6 jersey when the AFC teams showed off throwback uniforms that they'll use at some point next season.

The Broncos haven't been to the playoffs since reaching the AFC title game in 2005, but the main reason was a lousy defense. McDaniels and new general manager Brian Xanders have gone about retooling the defense with a bevy of waivers and free-agent signings, led by that of veteran safety Brian Dawkins.

With Cutler on the trading block, the Broncos are down to http://www.nfl.com/players/chrissimms/profile?id=SIM339462Chris Simms and Darrell Hackney at quarterback. Simms, who signed a two-year, $6 million free-agent deal ostensibly to serve as Cutler's backup, has thrown just two passes since undergoing emergency surgery to remove his spleen after a game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006.

He spent the 2008 season as the Tennessee Titans' No. 3 quarterback and played in only one game.

Hackney's next NFL pass will be his first.

Browns might try to get him, however they need to keep 1st round pick ,imo , so they could do a trade with shaun rogers(rumours are he isnt happy at cleveland) and maybe anderson or quinn.
Although it does seem like detroit has all the options.

I thought the Bears got the 3rd rounder?

Big gamble by the Bears, but it instantly makes them a big contender in the NFC.

Not good for the Vikings now.

hmm

well they have a QB now.

seriously i cant believe the vikings didnt go hard for him. he is a good young player and way better than what they have at QB now. and they havd pretty much all bases covered. good D. great running back. all they needed was a guy who could throw the ball.

say what you like about the guy he has an arm on him. he was denvers best last year.

Broncs will go 4-12.

HO-LEE-SHEEAT! Woohoo huge trade by the Bears... I haven't seen an off-season play like this by Chicago since... well I don't think I ever have! I'd heard that Cutler was a Bears fan as a kid but thought that was a pretty tenuous hope to hang my hat on... I guess not. Looking forward to next season. We're reportedly close to signing Orlando Pace for the O-line as well which would be a nice boost

edit - we have signed Pace:

Bit generous there they will be lucky to get that the way there going and they have a tough schedule next season as well.

Vikings didn't go hard because they've f**ked around with their draft picks too much the last couple seasons, would be disaster to get rid of 2 more 1sts.

But however you look at it, the Vikings are f**ked for next season IMO, might even come 3rd in the NFC North.

Cutler has all the physical tools, but he is very immature, and for all those yards he threw he has a losing record. Sure the Broncos defense has a lot to do with it, but he hasn't shown any leadership skills.

Good place for him to land though, should be dynamite off play action with Forte

remember theyve still got Oakland twice. Kansas at home.

3 wins possible there.

Cassell will have to come good at kansas or San diego could have that division sewn up after 6 wins.

we could go 7-9 and have a legit shot of winning this division. its gotta be the worst in the NFL.

denver are idiots. dont get me wrong id take rivers over cutler every day of the week but its not like they were getting rid of ryan leaf here.

they get Kyle Orton in the trade....

i suppose they will be looking to draft either Stafford or Sanchez if they go for a QB this year. doubts remain over those guys. this isnt the strongest QB class ever out of the draft by any means.

Very tough schedule

Still, considering Cutler wanted out they got a pretty good deal for him, much better than I expected

It might be a painfull year coming up but if they get a high draft pick next year as well as Chicago's there could be light at the end of the tunnel.

I'd rather have cutler's jersey playing for my team than Rivers that downie.

Broncos D is fairly stronger than last year, and with these extra two picks, we'll strengthen the D right up and really look good.

McDaniels should weave his magic on Orton and make him as good as Cassel so the Broncs are good as far as QB goes I'd say.

We should finish with a winning record, I mean there's not much to beat - Kansas, Oakland and that other sh*t team no-one cares about.

We have gone through this a million times, but here it is again:

Rivers > Cutler

I don't buy the stats thing between Rivers and Cutler; Rivers has played with a better team compared to Cutler over their careers.
LT is a certain HOFer and the SD defence has been a lot better than the Broncos over the same time.
They both play in the same division so there is no argument on who has the easier schedule.
Rivers did carry his team last year and he should have been in the Pro Bowl, but that doesn't mean he is better that Cutler.

Yeah Broncos have gotten the best possible deal they could have dreamed of.

Sure they might have to chuck 1 year, but they are looking ok to set themselves up in the next 2-5 years.

Kyle Orton is a competent QB tbh, he played fairly well @ QB with Chicago who have no receiving corps whatsoever.

At Denver he'll be throwing to Scheffler, Marshall, Royal and Gaffney.

The defence is certainly better this year, with Dawkins and others signing to bolster the line.

With the extra 1st rounder and the 3rd rounder this year, they can make some quality D line drafts and really strengthen the D.

With the D almost in check, a strong backfield commitee, a reasonal QB under the helm and a whiz offensive coach they'll be much better off than many think.
