Robert Griffin III: Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware is the scariest defensive player in the NFL

During a recent interview with GQ Magazine, former Baylor star and current Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was asked who he thought was the scariest defensive player in the league.
Griffin’s response? A Dallas Cowboy.

“I’d have to go in our division: DeMarcus Ware,” Griffin told the men’s magazine. “I don’t ever fear a player, but D Ware, he got me good twice last year. Took my head off.”

In two games against the Cowboys during the former Heisman Trophy winner’s rookie season, the stat sheet had Ware down for a quarterback hit in each meeting.

The Cowboys, however, lost both, 38-31 and 28-18.

It’s a little surprising that the Cowboy Griffin named wasn’t Anthony Spencer. The Cowboys defensive end sacked Griffin twice in the first game and once more in the season finale.

Griffin, who tossed 20 touchdown passes and ran for another seven scores, led the Redskins to their first division title in 13 years, earning a Pro Bowl roster spot and an AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award along the way.

DeMarcus Ware back in old face mask

August, 13, 2013 8:50 PM CT

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- When the Cowboys play Arizona on Saturday DeMarcus Ware will be back in his old U-bar face mask with the NFL awaiting more paperwork before it approves the eight-bar helmet he would like to wear.

Ware wore the eight-bar mask last week at Oakland and had hoped that meant he would be cleared for the regular season. He was in the U-bar at Tuesday's practice.

The NFL denied Indianapolis’ Robert Mathis request to wear a non-conforming face mask earlier in the week.

Players need to have medical reasons as to why they need to wear a specialized mask. Ware has battled through a series of stingers in the last few years.

Desperate Dallas Cowboys Have to Wrap Up Brian Waters

By Brad Gagnon
(NFC East Lead Writer) on August 15, 2013

hi-res-5825988_crop_north.jpg

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

If the Dallas Cowboys weren't officially in desperation mode regarding their interior offensive line, they're entering that range right now.

Ronald Leary, an early preseason bright spot at guard, will have surgery on his right knee, according to Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News, casting doubt on his ability to suit up Week 1.

The incumbent starter at left guard, Nate Livings, remains on the sideline as he recovers from his own right knee surgery, and the inconsistent Mackenzy Bernadeau—while healthy at the moment—hasn't been a very reliable option on the right side.

Veteran Ryan Cook is out with a back injury, while third-year option Kevin Kowalski is currently not an option due to a knee injury.

Throw in that Brandon Moore spurned the team last week and that leaves the 'Boys with just Bernadeau and David Arkin (and possibly first-round pick Travis Frederick, with Phil Costa starting at center) to man the two guard positions for the time being.

As a result, everyone's looking at Brian Waters.

The Cowboys made a contract offer to the 12-year veteran before the week began, according to ESPN Dallas' Calvin Watkins, but they've yet to hear back. He was out of the league last year after refusing to play in New England, but it could be a different story in his home state of Texas.
Waters was a Pro Bowler in 2010 with Kansas City and in 2011 with New England.

In '11, Pro Football Focus (subscription required) gave him the league's fourth-highest grade at the guard position, concluding that he was the best pass-blocking guard in football. So while he might be 36 years old now, he's probably still the best option Dallas has.

Naturally, folks are probably wondering what's taking Waters so long. But he probably is in no rush to join a team at camp—especially two time zones over. And consider, too, that as things become more dire in Big D, the price probably continues to climb.

There are very few guard options remaining on the free-agent market, so Waters and his agent probably realize where the leverage lays.

Even when healthy, the Cowboys are in less than ideal shape at the guard spots and right across the offensive line. This is a team that finished 31st in the league with 3.6 yards per carry while surrendering more pressure than all but three other units in 2012, per PFF.

At this point, Dallas might not be able to afford to let a guy like Waters get away.

A look at Cowboys possible cuts

August, 25, 2013 Aug 25
1:00
PM CT

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- By Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys will have to make 13 roster moves to get to the 75-player limit.

While some teams will make the moves before the deadline, the sense is the Cowboys will not be announcing their cuts on Sunday, so we’ll take some educated (stop laughing) guesses.

The only lock is that defensive end Tyrone Crawford will be moved to injured reserve as he recovers from a torn Achilles. He was hurt in the first training camp practice but if the Cowboys had put him on IR before the cut to 75, they would have had to expose him to waivers, and he would have been claimed. This move keeps Crawford with the team.

With the starters not playing, with perhaps some exceptions, you have to keep numbers at certain spots over others. Running back Kendial Lawrence might not make the team, but if he is cut, then Dallas has two backs ready for Thursday in Phillip Tanner and Joseph Randle because of Lance Dunbar’s foot injury.

Another question is at quarterback. Do the Cowboys keep Nick Stephens and play him versus Houston on Thursday and sit Alex Tanney? As we look at the 12 remaining moves, we’ll go with the idea that Stephens will be around.

Possible cuts:

Wide receiver: Anthony Amos, Eric Rogers, Jared Green. If Cole Beasley is healthy, then the Cowboys would have six receivers to play against the Texans. That’s enough to get through the game. If Beasley isn’t healthy, then Rogers could be kept. Rogers and Green could be brought back to the practice squad after the final cuts on Aug. 31.

Tight end: Colin Cochart would appear to be the odd man out and he’s had a nice camp, but the Cowboys will have four guys to play against the Texans in James Hanna, Gavin Escobar, Dante Rosario and Andre Smith.

Offensive line: Ryan Cook. A back injury has kept Cook off the field for most of the summer. He’s facing a severe uphill battle and an early decision like this could help him hook up with another club. If he can return to the field this week, then Ray Dominguez or Dennis Godfrey could be the odd man out. If you include Jermey Parnell, then the Cowboys would have nine linemen playing against the Texans.

Defensive back: Xavier Brewer, Jakar Hamilton. Brewer had a pick against Cincinnati, so he has his training camp moment. Hamilton was a dark horse to make the roster with the Cowboys giving him $10,000 to sign as an undrafted free agent, but he has not made enough plays and has been surpassed by Jeff Heath. If Morris Claiborne plays at least some against the Texans, Dallas would have nine DBs available. The team could even get by with eight.

Linebacker: Deon Lacey. Just not enough room for Lacey right now and the Cowboys have other linebackers they like more.

Defensive line: Jason Vega, Jabari Fletcher, Jerome Long. Vega signed late last week, so maybe Dallas gives him a game to show something. Long has had some moments in camp but just looks like he will be caught in the wash.

Specialists: Brett Maher. No need to explain here.

Matt Johnson placed on Injured Reserve

The Cowboys drafted Johnson last season in the 4th round. For the second straight year the Safety has been placed on IR. Last year it was hamstring problems with both legs. This season it's a foot injury.

No surprises here. If Alex Tanney clears waivers could make practise squad.

Running Back (4): DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar, Phillip Tannerr & Joseph Randle
As expected he Cowboys kept four RB's.

Wide Receiver (5): Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Terrance Williams, Dwayne Harris & Cole Beasley
No surprises

Tight Ends (5): Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar, James Hanna, Daante Rosario & Andre Smith
I know they want to use multiple TE schemes this season, but to keep five is surprising.

Offensive Line (10): Tyron Smith, Ron Leary, Travis Frederick, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Nate Livings. Doug Free, Phil Costa, Darrion Weems, David Arkin, & Jermey Parnell.
I thought Livings would end on PUP (still might). Good starting five, but depth is a problem. Would not surprise if changes are made through free agency.

Defensive Line (9): DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Jason Hatcher, Nick Hayden, George Selvie, Kyle Wilber, Ben Bass, Landon Cohen & Sean Lissemore
From my perspective no surprises here. But changes could be coming.

Linebacker (5) – Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, Justin Durant, Enrnie Sims & DeVonte Holloman
The surprise here is that they only kept five.

Defensive Backs (10): Morris Claiborne, Brandon Carr, Barry Church, Will Allen, Orlando Scandrick, B.W. Webb, J.J. Wilcox, Danny McCray, Eric Frampton & Jeff Heath
McCray made the team because of his special teams experience. Only have four cornerbacks on the roster. I would expect that to change.

Specialists (3) – Dan Baailey (K), Chriss Jones (P) & L.P. Ladouceur (LS)
No surprises here.

After being guaranteed $70,000, Dallas Cowboys LB Brandon Magee lands on the street

When the Cowboys signed Brandon Magee as an undrafted free agent this May, they liked him so much

they gave him $70,000 in guaranteed money – more than any of the 46 seventh-round picks selected in 2012 received.
But on Saturday the Cowboys released the linebacker from Arizona State who missed the last two exhibition games because of a concussion he suffered Aug. 19.
Before Magee was sidelined, he failed to make much of an impact during the preseason, when he collected 16 tackles. The Cowboys were hopeful Magee would be able to carve out a role as a reserve middle linebacker. But during training camp he was moved to the weak side and never seemed make a convincing case for a roster spot.

Cowboys make trade with KC Chiefs

The Cowboys have made a trade for Chiefs LB/DE Edgar Jones. They have given the Chiefs their 6th round draft pick in next years draft in return for Jones and the Chiefs 7th round pick in next years draft.

Dallas have a need at both positions.

Jones is 6-3 and 262 pounds. Spent 5 seasons with the Ravens and last year at the Chiefs.
