jerry jones to tmz.com: 'when we're not practicing, we entertain a lot'

oxnard, calif. – cowboys owner jerry jones was caught leaving a chinese restaurant in beverly hills on friday night and asked about his son’s recent bus trip to a sunset strip nightclub.

A tmz.com reporter caught up with jones as he and his wife, gene, exited mr chow.
With jones struggling to identify his car, the tmz reporter asked, “is that a common thing, socialization between referees and team executives?”

“really i wouldn’t want to comment on that,” jones said, “but i can say this, our officiating is probably as, i’ll say it’s as great as it’s ever been in my 25 years in the nfl.”

on tuesday night, cowboys executive vice president stephen jones was shown in a tmz.com video entering a nightclub named bootsy bellows along with other cowboys executives and dean blandino, the nfl vice president of officiating.

The tmz reporter asked, “a couple of days ago the team bus ended up in front of a big club, have you talked to stephen about where he can take the team bus around town?”

“well, one of the things we do, when we’re not practicing, we entertain a lot,” jones said. “we have a lot of our clients and their guests and that’s just a part of our entertainment with the cowboys.”

[
b]silence by cowboys, nfl on stephen jones' night out with vp of officiating doesn't look good
[/B]
oxnard, calif. — all stephen jones wanted was to get away from training camp for a few hours and enjoy what los angeles has to offer. It made sense to make the 62-mile trip on the cowboys bus.

By now, the team’s executive vice president knows what it feels like to be thrown under the bus.

Jones isn’t the first person to create a stir on the sunset strip. He won’t be the last. But this excursion to a nightclub named bootsy bellows became a made-for-tmz event with unexpected ramifications.

The sight of stephen jones, his brother jerry jr. And others stepping off and back aboard the bus to soak in hollywood is preserved for posterity.

These images will elicit different responses from different people. But there’s another image that creates an issue for the nfl.

One of the travel companions with jones on tuesday evening was dean blandino, the nfl vice president of officiating.

Let’s get this out of the way right now. Don’t believe cries from unnamed club officials around the nfl who allege this somehow gives the cowboys a competitive advantage or indicates favoritism. Part of blandino’s job is to develop relationships with owners, club officials, coaches and members of the influential competition committee.

Did we mention that stephen jones is on the competition committee?

This is where it gets sticky. Jones and blandino are respected throughout the league. No one has come close to suggesting the professional ethics of either should be called into question.

But the appearance of impropriety doesn’t require impropriety to take place. This doesn’t play well in the public arena, and the cowboys’ competitors are only too happy to snipe from the weeds and raise doubts.

Appearances matter. If not, why does the nfl penalize players for dunking the ball over the goal posts after a touchdown? How can a league that fines players for minor uniform infractions ignore this boys night out among two people in a position of influence?

Hypocrisy is another behavior that doesn’t play well in the public arena.

Nfl officials have chosen not to comment but indicate no one has lodged a complaint over the episode. Jones has also declined to comment at this time.

Again, it’s not unusual for blandino to discuss business and get to know officials from around the league in social settings. This is how the nfl and other businesses operate.

It turns out blandino didn’t even spend much time on the cowboys’ high-profile ride known as “the elegant lady.’’ sources say he met jones and others at a restaurant two or three blocks away, hopped on the bus for a quick ride to the nightclub and left a short time later by cab.
Does that sound like a league official cavorting with jones on the sunset strip for the paparazzi? Does that sound like two people who checked their professional integrity at the door of the cowboys’ bus?

The nfl and the cowboys refuse to discuss what took place between jones and blandino on tuesday because they believe there’s nothing to discuss. They consider it a non-story.

But this is a story. The problem is they have let the narrative get away from them by staying silent. They have allowed a negative perception to mushroom.

How long will this be a topic of conversation? Probably not long. Other juicy issues will quickly push their way to the forefront. This bus ride will be nothing more than an amusing blip on the entertainment screen in a few days.

But for now, it doesn’t look good.

Dallas Cowboys to sign Aussie punter Tom Hornsey to fill out roster

OXNARD, Calif. — The Dallas Cowboys plan to sign punter Tom Hornsey to fill out their roster after waiving punter Cody Mandell (Alabama) over the weekend.

The addition of Hornsey will give the Cowboys a full 90-player roster. Hornsey was Memphis’ starting punter the last four years. He was the 2013 Ray Guy Award recipient as college football’s top punter. He averaged 43.2 yards per punt throughout his college career.

Hornsey is from Geelong, Victoria, Australia. During his senior season, Hornsey had 13 punts of 60 or more yards, including a career-long 79-yarder.

The Cowboys returning starter at punter is Chris Jones, and he’s been solid so far throughout training camp.

Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders brawl in joint training camp practice that featured intensified police presence because of gang concerns

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys’ first joint practice this training camp against the Oakland Raiders led to one brawl near a fence lined with fans Tuesday and two other scuffles.

But there was also major concern for off-the-field problems because of gang issues in Ventura County that involve both teams.

Two of Ventura County’s most violent street gangs wear the apparel of the Cowboys and Raiders. An Oxnard city ordinance is even in place to prevent gang members from wearing Cowboys or Raiders jerseys within certain parts of the city.

On Day 20, the Cowboys had their largest crowd of training camp –8,326 fans — and many of them were in silver and black. The police presence also intensified.

More than 30 officers were at the practice – more than double the usual total – and included military K-9 bomb units, plain-clothes officers in the stands and parole and probation officers who could help identify gang members. Some officers were in bullet-proof vests.

But the only brawl didn’t require police intervention.

Oakland tight end Mychal Rivera caught a pass near the left sideline and lowered his shoulder. Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne, in his first full practice since July 29 after battling right knee tendinitis, lowered his shoulder to hit Rivera. Claiborne grabbed Rivera’s leg and lifted him before Rivera slammed hard to the ground. With Claiborne and Rivera turning to walk back toward their respective huddles, both teams sprinted toward the two and a brawl ensued.

It wasn’t long until dozens of players were pushing and punching with some pinned against a fence that is lined with fans along the sideline.
“I really couldn’t see it. I was on the bottom of the pile just hoping no one would pull my helmet off,” Claiborne said. “I was trying to get from down there, and I heard there were three separate brawls going on.”

Late in the brawl, cornerback B.W. Webb was hit by some Raiders’ fans – one that used a helmet – and then Webb pushed back twice.

“Somebody came across on my head so I had to let them know this ain’t no play-play out here, man,’’ Webb said. “I wasn’t expecting that but hey, whoever jumps on my back, I had to get them off.”

Just before the brawl, the first scuffle between the two teams was short-lived when Cowboys undrafted rookie defensive tackle Davon Coleman and Oakland offensive lineman Austin Howard locked arms and started pushing after a 1-on-1 drill.

The joint practice ended with another dustup. Cowboys fullback J.C. Copeland had his helmet ripped off by Raiders linebacker Justin Cole, leading to both teams sprinting toward each other again with some pushing and shoving.

“That passion is what I had hoped to get out of getting these teams together,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

Source: Football is 'too dangerous' for Cowboys' DeVonte Holloman

IRVING -- Dallas Cowboys second-year linebacker DeVonte Holloman told coaches Thursday he can’t play football anymore.

Holloman left Saturday’s preseason game against Baltimore in the final seven minutes because of what club officials called a neck injury. But Holloman is dealing with a spinal injury that could lead to paralysis if it worsened.

After examining MRIs, Cowboys team physicians Dr. Dan Cooper and Dr. Andrew Dossett (the same doctor who has operated twice on quarterback Tony Romo’s back) told Holloman he shouldn’t play football anymore.

To repair his spine, Holloman would need spinal fusion surgery at the C3-C4 and C4-C5 vertebra levels, a source said.

“That would be too dangerous to try and play with,” the source said. “He’s better off not doing it.”

Holloman won’t need surgery to live a normal life, but can’t risk further injury by playing football.

Holloman missed seven games his rookie season for what he called a spinal contusion that he suffered in a practice. Holloman underwent a minor neck procedure last season, the source said, and he dealt with some tingling in his hands. It’s unclear, the source said, if last year’s injury is related to the one he suffered against Baltimore.

Holloman, 23, received a second opinion earlier this week from a doctor in San Antonio and is seeking a third opinion about his injury. However, he’s not expecting the diagnosis to change.
Holloman, a sixth-round pick last year out of South Carolina, was expected to compete for the starting middle linebacker job after Sean Lee was lost for the season with a torn ACL during the first offseason practice. Holloman started the final two games at middle linebacker last season for the Cowboys. He had 11 tackles and two sacks in the season finale against Philadelphia.

What the new Cowboys HQ will look like

Amid much fanfare, stakeholders gathered Friday in Frisco to celebrate the ground-breaking for the city’s multi-use event centre and the world headquarters for the Dallas Cowboys.

The one-of-a-kind project is a joint venture among the city of Frisco, Frisco ISD and the Dallas Cowboys. It will pair the needs of the NFL team with a multitude of learning opportunities for Frisco students.

DeVonte Holloman: Ending playing career has been rough, but it was an easy decision

IRVING – DeVonte Holloman talked to media members Monday for the first time since suffering a career-ending spinal injury during the Dallas Cowboys’ second preseason game.

Holloman said he is dealing with spinal stenosis, which stems from the same injury he suffered his rookie year.

Sustaining such an injury makes the second-year linebacker much more likely to suffer paralysis from another hit.

“It’s pretty rough, but I got a good support system with my family, and the Cowboys are doing everything that they can to help me out,” Holloman said. “Considering my family and my health, it’s an easy decision.”
Holloman, who missed seven games last season from what he called a spinal contusion, immediately knew he suffered a serious injury late in the game against Baltimore.

After the play he punched the ground in frustration before team doctors arrived on the field.

“My arms locked up when I made contact with the guy,” Holloman said. “It was scary for me, and just frustrating.

“In the back of my mind I kind of knew what was getting ready to happen, so I had plenty of time to prepare myself.”

At this time, Holloman doesn’t know exactly what the future holds for him. Coaching is a possibility. The University of South Carolina has offered the former Gamecock a graduate assistant coaching spot with their football team. But he’s still weighing his options.

What has been the toughest part for the 23-year-old?

“Watching,” Holloman said. “I just watched the last preseason game and I was jittery. My daughter and my girlfriend were trying to be around me and I was just into the game. It’ll be hard, but I’m still rooting for all these guys out here. I’m a Cowboys fan for life.”

Sad story. In the final game of last year showed he could have developed in to a good player.

For the moment here is the Cowboys 53 men roster. I say for the moment because I suspect there will be changes, especially on the offensive line and defensive side of the ball.

QUARTERBACKS (3):
Tony Romo, Brandon Weeden, Dustin Vaughan
Surprised, but happy they kept Vaughan. He shows promise.

RUNNING BACKS (4):
DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar, Joseph Randle, FB Tyler Clutts
There was a lot of media speculation they would keep 4 runningbacks, including the three they did plus Williams. I thought four would be one too many. As for Clutts his inclusion comes because the team doesn't have a true blocking tight end.

WIDE RECEIVERS (5):
Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Dwayne Harris and Devin Street
Disappointed they didn't keep LaRon Byrd. They might have if there wasn't bigger needs else where.

TIGHT ENDS (3):
Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar, James Hanna
As expected. The downside the lack of a blocking tight end.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (9):
RT Doug Free, LT Tyron Smith, LG Ron Leary, RG Zack Martin, C Travis Frederick, OG/C Mackenzy Bernadeau, OT Jermey Parnell, OT John Wetzel, OT Darrion Weems
Not sure about Parnell, Wetzel and Weems. Could see some changes in the next few days.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (11):
DT Henry Melton, DE Anthony Spencer, DE/DT Tyrone Crawford, DE George Selvie, DT Nick Hayden, DE Jeremy Mincey, DE Lavar Edwards, DT Ken Bishop, DE DeMarcus Lawrence, DT Terrell McClain, DT Davon Coleman
Outside of Melton, Spencer (who are injured) and Mincey there is not a lot of experience in this group. As with the O-line could see some changes in the next few days.

LINEBACKERS (6):
Bruce Carter, Rolando McClain, Anthony Hitchens, Justin Durant, Kyle Wilber, Cameron Lawrence
Not sure if six is enough. Some big questions about this group. Losing Lee has weakened it a lot. A lot will depend on how McClain plays.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9):
CB Brandon Carr, CB Morris Claiborne, CB Sterling Moore, S J.J. Wilcox, S Jeff Heath, S Ahmad Dixon, S Barry Church, CB Tyler Patmon, CB/S Jemea Thomas
If this group plays up to its potential then they can be good. A lot depends on how well Carr, Claiborne and Church play.

SPECIALISTS (3):
P Chris Jones, K Dan Bailey, LS L.P. Ladouceur
Not much to say other then that Bailey and Ladouceur are amongst the best in the NFL.

ON RESERVE/SUSPENDED LIST (out first 4 games; don’t count against 53-man roster):
CB Orlando Scandrick, S Jakar Hamilton

Dallas Cowboys Roster Moves 2014:

Cowboys Add Guard Donald Hawkins

As expected, the
Cowboys are churning their roster. Today they claimed guard Donald Hawkins who was released by the Cleveland Browns. Hawkins is a rookie who played college ball at the university of Texas.
He was an undrafted free agent who initially signed with the
Philadelphia Eagles and played in three preseason games with them. He was released and picked up by the Browns, who just let him go again.
Hawkins is 6-4, 310-pound rookie out of Texas. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Philadelphia on May 10, Hawkins played as a reserve in all three of the Eagles’ preseason games. After transferring from Northwest Community College, Hawkins started 24 of his 25 games at Texas. Born in Memphis, Tenn., Hawkins graduated from Rosa Fort High School in Tunica, Miss.
Previous to the draft, this was the scouting report on Hawkins.
STRENGTHS: Hawkins stays light on his feet with good lateral quickness and shuffle to protect the edge, doing a nice job squaring up defenders with natural body control and coordination. Hawkins looks comfortable pulling and blocking on the move with the athleticism to get to the second level and clear the road down the field.

WEAKNESSES: He has a narrow base and too often gets caught lunging and whiffing at his targets, falling off balance and struggling to recover. Hawkins utilizes angles and flashes an aggressive demeanor at the point of attack, but has room to improve his timing off the snap and his overall discipline. --Dane Brugler
Hawkins played as a reserve in all three of the Eagles’ preseason games, earning a +1.2 grade from Pro Football Focus for his 26 snaps. He was released by the Eagles in the first round of roster cuts and picked up by the Browns, who played him briefly in their preseason finale against the Bears.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dallas-cowboys-roster-moves-2014-182405943.html?.tsrc=yahoo
The team has released tackle John Wetzel and signed rookie guard Donald Hawkins off waivers.

The Cowboys have are also expected to unload two more players to clear room for former Seattle linebacker Korey Toomer and ex-San Francisco safety C.J. Spillman, players the team is planning to sign, sources said.
Toomer, a 2012 fifth-round draft pick, has never appeared in an NFL regular-season game. Spillman, on the other hand, is an experienced veteran and an accomplished special teams player. A six-year veteran, Spillman led the 49ers coverage units with 19 tackles last season.

Sources: Cowboys to bring in Michael Sam for physical Wednesday

If the Dallas Cowboys like what they see Wednesday, Michael Sam's NFL career will not be over.

The openly gay defensive end drafted by the St. Louis Rams will come to Valley Ranch on Wednesday to take a physical, multiple sources tell SportsDay.

If everything is in order, Dallas would add him to the practice squad, according to an ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Rams selected Sam, the SEC co-defensive player of the year at Missouri, with the 249th overall pick out of 256 overall.

Sam showed up for his face-to-face exit meeting with St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher on Sunday, a few hours after clearing waivers. Sam had three sacks during the preseason, with fellow college star Johnny Manziel one of his victims. But for most of the preseason, he was playing with the second-hand third-stringers.

"I don't want to talk about available players," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] when asked about the possibility of adding Sam.

The Cowboys' defensive line has been an area of concerned this summer. Key free agent acquisition Henry Melton tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last September and missed all four preseason games. As Rick Gosselin wrote Monday, the two starting ends, Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie, have been cut a combined seven times in their careers and tackle Nick Hayden sat out a season before signing with the Cowboys as a street free agent in 2013.

The Cowboys didn’t pursue Sam in the draft and didn’t have him ranked high on their draft board. Previously, the Cowboys didn’t view Sam as a good scheme fit for them. The Cowboys want speedy defensive ends. Also, Sam is more of a left defensive end, and the Cowboys have more of a need at right defensive end with rookie DeMarcus Lawrence expected to miss the first half of the season and Anthony Spencer not expected to play the first few weeks.

Sam's final college game was in AT&T Stadium, the Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. His Missouri Tigers beat Oklahoma State in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, 41-31, on Jan. 3, 2014.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dallas-cowboys/headlines/20140902-sources-cowboys-to-bring-in-michael-sam-for-physical-wednesday.ece

The Cowboys have a need for depth at DE so placing Sam on the practise squad is not a bad idea. As a senior showed he could get to the qb with 11.5 sacks.

How many points did Romo get in the 49ers player of the year competition?
Hahahahahaha

I would have given him 10/10. He had his poorest game in a very long time. Will be interesting to see if he can turn around for next weekend. If he can't then their is a good chance we will lose again.
