Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on LB Rolando McClain: He tackles and he tackles hard
IRVING Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett wasnt in the best of moods Monday after a woeful beginning to the season against San Francisco, but he did seem to pep up when talking about one player.
In his first regular-season game since Nov. 25, 2012, linebacker Rolando McClain made few impact plays but certainly showed signs of why the Cowboys took a chance on him.
McClain started at middle linebacker a position that was vacated when Sean Lee was lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and he showed his athletic ability and physical nature the way he shot through gaps to stop the run.
McClain had six tackles in his 25 snaps against the run, a 24 percent stop percentage that leads the NFL after the first week, according to ProFootballFocus.com.
Rolando played well in this game, Garrett said. They challenge you a lot of different ways so it can be challenging for those linebackers to deal with all of that. Throughout the game he made a lot of plays on the ball, made a lot of physical tackles. His presence was felt both in the run game and defending the pass. It was a good start for him.
Since he was drafted eighth overall in 2010, McClain has retired twice and been arrested three times. But the Cowboys defense, which finished last in the league in 2013, wasnt in position to be picky when trying to find help this offseason.
The Cowboys made a low-risk trade with Baltimore in early July to acquire McClain, who failed conditioning tests with the Ravens in mid-April. Hes now arguably the Cowboys most athletic player on defense.
Hes been physical since he got here, Garrett said. He tackles and he tackles hard.
McClain also played more in the fourth quarter as part of the Cowboys nickel defense alongside Bruce Carter. McClain replaced Justin Durant in the nickel defense after Durant strained his groin. McClain also took over the defensive play-calls on the field after Durant was hurt.
His goal is to have a role and be a contributor, and [based on] everything I saw [Sunday] Rolando can be and will be, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. He made a difference in the middle.
Added defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli: You can see him every day in practice get better and better. I think we got something, really a good player and hopefully he can build off of it.

This is why I gave him 3 points for being the best defensive player for the Cowboys. Should only get better.
