Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on LB Rolando McClain: ‘He tackles and he tackles hard’

IRVING – Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett wasn’t in the best of moods Monday after a woeful beginning to the season against San Francisco, but he did seem to pep up when talking about one player.

In his first regular-season game since Nov. 25, 2012, linebacker Rolando McClain made few impact plays but certainly showed signs of why the Cowboys took a chance on him.

McClain started at middle linebacker – a position that was vacated when Sean Lee was lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament – and he showed his athletic ability and physical nature the way he shot through gaps to stop the run.

McClain had six tackles in his 25 snaps against the run, a 24 percent stop percentage that leads the NFL after the first week, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

“Rolando played well in this game,” Garrett said. “They challenge you a lot of different ways … so it can be challenging for those linebackers to deal with all of that. Throughout the game he made a lot of plays on the ball, made a lot of physical tackles. His presence was felt both in the run game and defending the pass. It was a good start for him.”

Since he was drafted eighth overall in 2010, McClain has retired twice and been arrested three times. But the Cowboys defense, which finished last in the league in 2013, wasn’t in position to be picky when trying to find help this offseason.

The Cowboys made a low-risk trade with Baltimore in early July to acquire McClain, who failed conditioning tests with the Ravens in mid-April. He’s now arguably the Cowboys’ most athletic player on defense.

“He’s been physical since he got here,” Garrett said. “He tackles and he tackles hard.”

McClain also played more in the fourth quarter as part of the Cowboys’ nickel defense alongside Bruce Carter. McClain replaced Justin Durant in the nickel defense after Durant strained his groin. McClain also took over the defensive play-calls on the field after Durant was hurt.

“His goal is to have a role and be a contributor, and [based on] everything I saw [Sunday] Rolando can be and will be,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “He made a difference in the middle.”

Added defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli: “You can see him every day in practice get better and better. I think we got something, really a good player and hopefully he can build off of it.”

This is why I gave him 3 points for being the best defensive player for the Cowboys. Should only get better.

Actually the defense wasn't that bad against the 49ers giving up 192 yards passing and 127 yards rushings. On offense the running game was quite good with Murray being the first RB for sometime to put up 100 yards against the 49ers. What was horrible for Dallas was the passing game.

Defensive tackle Henry Melton, the Cowboys' prized offseason acquisition, was hobbled with knee and groin issues in the preseason.

He missed the entire preseason, which is why he played only 26 snaps against San Francisco in Week 1. The Cowboys want to work him in slowly to ensure he doesn't aggravate the groin injury. Jeremy Mincey led the defensive line with 43 snaps. Rolando McClain played 44 snaps and did a good job of providing a physical presence. Kyle Wilber, a projected starter at linebacker much of training camp, had only four snaps.

Here's a look at the snap counts for each of the Cowboys' defensive players on Sunday:

J.J. Wilcox: 58
Brandon Carr: 57
Barry Church: 51
Bruce Carter: 48
Morris Claiborne: 47
Justin Durant: 47
Rolando McClain: 44
Jeremy Mincey: 43
Sterling Moore: 39
Tyrone Crawford: 33
Nick Hayden: 33
George Selvie: 27
Henry Melton: 26
Ken Bishop: 21
Lavar Edwards: 15
Jeff Heath: 7
Anthony Hitchens: 5
Kyle Wilber: 4

I thought Dallas may have rotated their DL more, they only made use of six. With Crawford and Hayden playing the most downs.

When the Dallas Cowboys fell behind 21-3 in the first quarter Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, it meant playcaller Scott Linehan was going to have to use a lot more formations with three receivers as opposed two tight ends.

That's why receiver Cole Beasley was on the field for 45 snaps and rookie fifth-round pick Devin Street for 21. Tight end Gavin Escobar, whose role was supposed to increase, played only nine snaps. The biggest surprise is that Lance Dunbar was only on the field for three plays.

Here's a look at the snap counts played for each of the Cowboys' offensive players on Sunday:

Jason Witten: 69
Doug Free: 69
Tyron Smith: 69
Ronald Leary: 69
Travis Frederick: 69
Zack Martin: 69
Tony Romo: 69
DeMarco Murray: 61
Terrance Williams: 60
Dez Bryant: 51
Cole Beasley: 45
Devin Street: 21
James Hanna: 13
Dwayne Harris: 9
Gavin Escobar: 9
Lance Dunbar: 3
Jermey Parnell: 3
Tyler Clutts: 1
A couple of interesting points here with the offense. The five offensive lineman played every down. The only other lineman used was Parnell who come in on three jumbo packages. Dunbar played only three downs and he was used as a receiver in all of them.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones accused of sexual assault in lawsuit

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is being sued by a woman who says he sexually assaulted her.Jana Weckerly, a former exotic dancer, filed a suit in Dallas County District Court on Monday alleging Jones assaulted her in 2009. Read the PDF of the entire lawsuit here. (Warning: Graphic content.)

Weckerly's lawyer told the Dallas Morning News that his client is still dealing with "trauma" from the alleged incident.

The suit also claims that Jones and the Cowboys conspired to cover up the assault. Weckerly seeks more than $1 million in damages.

Weckerly's lawyer sent a press release to several media outlets last week, claiming Weckerly was the person who took the photos of Jones posing with strippers. The pictures were taken in 2009 and recently leaked. Jones said the photos were "misrepresented."

The lawsuit is hot. If he is found guilty not sure what the NFL will do.

Attorney calls Jones lawsuit extortion

Updated: September 9, 2014, 8:52 PM ET
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Jerry Jones is fighting back against a former exotic dancer who filed civil suit against the Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, claiming she was sexually assaulted.

"These allegations are completely false," Jones' attorney, Levi McCathern said in a statement. "The legal complaint is unsupported by facts or evidence of any kind. This is nothing more than an attempt to embarrass and extort Jerry Jones. This is a shakedown by a lawyer who is a solo practitioner just trying to make a name for himself. The alleged incidents would have been more than five years old.

"We intend to vigorously contest this complaint and expect it will be shown for what it is - a money grab. Due to the seriousness of these baseless allegations, we have also involved law enforcement."

According to the complaint, Jana Weckerly is seeking more than $1 million in damages. She claims Jones grabbed her breasts, forced her to touch his penis and watch another woman perform oral sex on Jones. Criminal charges were never brought against Jones and the civil statute of limitations in the allegations against Jones and the allegations of negligence against the Cowboys have expired.

Weckerly took the photos of two women in suggestive photos with Jones at a Dallas hotel that were detailed last month by the sports blog

TerezOwens.com. Jones said the photos, which were from 2009, were a misrepresentation and that he had been aware of the photos for a long time. He declined comment when asked repeated follow up questions.

Rushing
DeMarco Murray required 48 yards to pass Felix Jones (2,728) and move in to 10th spot on the Cowboys career rushing list.

After gaining 118 yards against the 49ers, Murray is now in 10th spot.

Scoring:
Dan Bailey requires one field goal or three extra points to pass Michael Irvin (390) and move in to 5th spot on Cowboys career scoring list.

Bailey kicked a field goal plus two extra points and is now in 5th spot.

Tony Romo ranks second-to-last among NFL QBs; DeMarco Murray, Rolando McClain top 5 at their positions

Now that two games are in the books, I figured it would be a good time to see how the folks at
Pro Football Focus have graded the Cowboys players during their 1-1 start.

Here are some of the most interesting stats, grades and rankings I found.

OFFENSE
– Tony Romo ranks 38th among all quarterbacks who have taken a snap this season. Philadelphia’s Nick Foles is the only QB ranked below Romo. Yes, even Johnny Manziel, who has only taken three snaps, is 18th.
– Through two games, Romo is the lowest-graded player on the Cowboys offense.
– The top five: DeMarco Murray, Dwayne Harris, Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith and Terrance Williams.
– Dez Bryant, the Cowboys’ highest-graded offensive player for Week 2, is 10th among all wide receivers who have played at least 25 percent of their team’s snaps.
– Bryant is eighth among wide receivers in targets. He has caught 14 of the 19 passes thrown in his direction. The five passes he didn’t haul in were not considered catchable.
– DeMarco Murray is second to only Pittsburgh’s Le’Veon Bell among running backs who have played at least 75 percent of their team’s snaps
– Murray leads all running backs with 153 of his 285 rushing yards having come after contact.
– Tyron Smith ranks 21st among tackles and Zack Martin ranks 21st among guards who have played 75 percent of their team’s snaps.
– Doug Free had the biggest Week 1 to Week 2 swing, going from a +2.4 grade against San Francisco to a -3.0 grade against Tennessee.

DEFENSE

– Jeremy Mincey ranks eighth among 4-3 defensive ends who have played at least half of their team’s snaps.
– Tyrone Crawford was the Cowboys’ highest-graded player for Week 2. He played 28 snaps and was extremely effective as a pass rusher. He finished with one quarterback hit and a team-high five hurries.
– Among all 4-3 defensive ends, Tyrone Crawford ranks eighth, while Mincey is 10th. Former Cowboy DeMarcus Ware is 18th.
– Among all defensive tackles, Henry Melton ranks ninth. Former Cowboy Jeremiah Ratliff is fourth.
– Rolando McClain ranks fifth among all inside linebackers. Ahead of him are Carolina’s Luke Kuechly, Philadelphia’s DeMeco Ryans, San Francisco’s Patrick Willis and Detroit’s Stephen Tulloch.
– Sterling Moore ranks 12th among all cornerbacks.
– Morris Claiborne is the Cowboys’ lowest-graded defensive player through two games.
– The top five: Henry Melton, Rolando McClain, Tyrone Crawford, Jeremy Mincey and Sterling Moore.

SPECIAL TEAMS

– Surprisingly, Dan Bailey ranks 20th among kickers. But if you don’t count kickoffs and just focus on field goal and extra point efficiency, he ranks third.

DeMarco Murray clarifies sideline spat with Dez Bryant

During the second half, FOX television cameras caught Murray and Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant in what looked like an argument on the sidelines. Murray says that wasn’t the case.

“I wouldn’t call it a confrontation at all,” Murray said. “He’s telling me something, I’m telling him something. He’s listening to me, I’m listening to him. We’ve got a great relationship. That’s my guy, that’s one of my best friends on the team.”

Jerry Jones: Morris Claiborne hasn’t lived up to being sixth overall pick

The Cowboys believed Morris Claiborne was the second coming of Deion Sanders when they traded up in the 2012 draft to take the LSU cornerback with the sixth overall pick.

That has proven to be a major whiff by the team and owner Jerry Jones acknowledged that on his radio show Tuesday morning.

“Is he what we had hoped for at this point when we drafted him with the sixth overall pick, giving up the [second-round] pick to go up to the sixth pick to get him? No,” Jones said on KRLD-FM. “But he’s going to be a good player.”

The question has now turned to whether the injury-prone Claiborne should be benched. Orlando Scandrick has returned from his two-game suspension and Sterling Moore has proven to be a capable corner, particularly in nickel packages.

Claiborne missed the entire preseason and is coming off a game in which the Rams exposed him for five catches, 108 yards and two touchdowns, according to ProFootballFocus.com. He salvaged his disappointing day somewhat by coming through with a game-sealing interception, but it might have been too little, too late.
“Morris had a really good training camp and very competitive and then he suffered a little setback there injury wise and didn’t quite get it back by the time we left training camp,” Jones said. “We’ve got to look real hard. We got a guy [Scandrick] playing lights out, played really good the other day.”

Morris Claiborne storms out of facility

IRVING, Texas -- Cornerback Morris Claiborne skipped the Dallas Cowboys' walk-through practice and angrily left the club's Valley Ranch training facility Tuesday after being informed that Orlando Scandrick was replacing him in the starting lineup, multiple sources said.

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/11578003/morris-claiborne-dallas-cowboys-hears-lineup-news-bolts

Claiborne was having an ordinary game up till his interception. Right now I would place him #4 on the cornerback depth chart behind Carr, Scandrick and Moore.

We(Oakland) should try and sign him...

Seeing as our first round draft bust Rolando McClain is doing so well for them...

Jerry should sign JaMarcus Russell too...

 f**k that looks like a bad pick in retrospect

In retrospect it seems that way. But at the time we drafted Claiborne everyone and I do mean everyone was applauding the Cowboys for moving up in the draft and taking him. It just shows how much of a gamble the draft can be and how wrong every team can get it.

Result:
The Cowboys pass defense will have to improve a lot to hold back the Saints. Some pressure from the front four on Brees would certainly help. In games this season the Cowboys defense has allowed opposing TE’s to dominate so I expect Graham to put up good numbers for the Saints.
It should be a high scoring game
