Very good questions. It's such a hard one. Does the current system work? No, probably not. The Brownlow in the AFL is worse. But they need those countdown voting systems for intrigue and to build hype around the Dally Ms/Brownlow. If you did it like the NBA MVP, you lose column inches. It's the same in NRL/AFL - the key position players (ie spine in NRL) have the most influence on games and are most likely to win. And the ones in teams without superstars are also most likely. Ponga did well to have no other big names in his team. Tyson Gamble, Adam Clune and Phoenix Crossland aren't taking votes off you often. But maybe that speaks to Ponga's influence to get them to 5th.How does the system get "fixed" to represent the actual best player?
SJ was a very important player to our team, but I feel Cleary is in front of him as a halfback and even Reynolds.
Yes he had a stand out year, but Ponga stood out in his team more as he had less competition in his team vs SJ and AFB, Egan, even Harris.
How does an MVP system work?
Does each position for the round get 1st-16th (1 team has bye) across the teams?
Do you look better if you play the Tigers or Bulldogs twice in this year's competition?
It's like the coach of the year, that is a bit of a kerfuffle when Ivan Cleary doesn't win it once during what could be an unprecedented (modern era) three-peat. In fact he won it in 2020 when they were coached pretty poorly in the GF, and 2014 when they lost in the prelim. But if you gave it to the coach who won the minor premiership or looked most likely in week 3 of the finals, it'd be pretty boring I guess.
