Daniel Anderson and Jarryd Hayne on collision course
THE relationship between Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson and superstar fullback Jarryd Hayne is at breaking point.
So much so that Hayne's agent Wayne Beavis last night called for a meeting with Anderson to thrash out their differences, which are threatening to derail Parramatta's premiership campaign.
Beavis was furious after he woke up and read yesterday's The Sunday Telegraph headline "Blame Hayne" following the Eels' 10-6 to the Broncos at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night.
Hayne was so upset he had been singled out for criticism that he stormed out of Parramatta Stadium after the game, boycotting a compulsory team function with fans at the Leagues Club.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal that Parramatta directors have summoned Anderson to appear before the board tomorrow to explain the team's poor form and the falling-out with Hayne.
After the game Anderson told the press conference: "I think our fullback is learning. He wasn't good tonight in my opinion. Not many people will say it but he was off his game. I think he would have been frustrated at some of the decisions he made."
Obviously disappointed he had been singled out for criticism, Hayne told reporters: "We're just not jelling. It's the coach's job ... it's for him to bring us together and to work that out."
Beavis phoned Eels chief executive Paul Osborne yesterday morning after he had read the Eels match report.
"The first I knew of any issues was when I read the paper this morning, so I rang Ossie and said I need a meeting with your coach," Beavis said.
"I would have thought if the coach had a problem with him, he would have had a meeting to sort it out. Has the coach even spoken to Jarryd about it?
"These things shouldn't be publicly aired. If he's got a problem, let's get in a room and talk about it.
"That's the professional way to handle things.
"I want to sit down with Jarryd and the coach ASAP because it was poor form to do it in the press."
Parramatta insiders say that Anderson's press conference revelations on Saturday night that he was unhappy with his $500,000-a-season fullback had been common knowledge around the club for weeks.
Anderson's relationship problems with Polynesian players date back to his days as New Zealand Warriors coach.
On this occasion, many inside the Parramatta club believe he has done nothing that warrants Hayne to be overly upset. Beavis denies it but there are some in the Eels camp who have been concerned for two months that Hayne's ego is getting out of control now that he is by far the highest paid player at the club and one of the game's most high-profile players.
"Jarryd has changed a lot since last year," one insider said. "There is a genuine concern that all the publicity has got to him."
The Daily Telegraph understands Anderson has spoken to Hayne regularly about his form - or lack thereof - in recent weeks and also his failure to comply with game plans and the general attacking structure that his teammates stick to.
It's an extremely difficult and delicate issue for Parramatta to handle because of Hayne's incredible popularity among the club's army of supporters.
Osborne and Anderson know who supporters will back if it becomes a bigger issue.
The Eels chief executive last night said he was still hopeful Parramatta could recover in time to make the finals.
"Wayne Beavis did ring me this morning and I'm happy to set up a meeting to smooth things over," Osborne said.
"Maybe there have been a few communication problems but it's nothing that doesn't happen at other clubs.
"We've obviously got some issues and we've got to work our way through them. Our defence is the second best in the NRL but our attack is the second worst and it's obviously not jelling.
"We showed last year that we are in a position close enough if good enough but they've got to turn it around very soon."
