To quote Marc Maron: good talk
Yep, it was a very interesting chat.
The highlights for me:
*2-3 years to bring about a genuine top 8 roster
* recognition of imports on team success, including lead in times.
* A lot of emphasis on training hard
* Doesn’t want players who can’t tackle.
* Experience in halves is important.
*infatuated with Clearys game.
* He favours the halves and front row positions
He says that teams get their value from lower paid playing above their salary. I think that’s a really good point.
Between the lines, he’s going to have the tough talks with Flanno about players.
I really liked his holistic approach.
He thinks the side is Ok, but you can tell he’s very anxious to add the value.
He came across as brutally honest about having to make decisions during his tenure. Code for swinging the axe.
Very polite and grateful for this opportunity to assist SGI.
I suspect that Daniel and Flanno will cross paths at some point, a bit of energy and competition despite different roles. We had a few recruitment people like that before we hit the skids. They can be yes men, but that’s not offering much.
The interviewer let him speak, so that was excellent.
In terms of club propaganda, the more you listened, the less space it was given, so we learned more about Daniel’s thinking in the game, which is the whole point. So well done to Dragons Den.
This is type of brutal honesty that harbours change.
The proof is in the pudding, but I could go another hour listening to his thoughts.
We won’t know until the project is done. He mentioned and understood Flanno needs good players asap, but that’s no easy ambition.
