I believe Daniel Backo will be a Lock and will play exactly the game plan that Bill Williams does.

3. Ben Smith
4. Dan Backo
5. Timana Tahu
6. Feleti Mateo
7. Corey Pearson
8. Cannings
9. Riddell
10.
11.Hindy

So with this team, if our players stands shoulder to shoulder, you would not see any gaps at all.

Just like when the Romans were conquering Europe.

So what's with the name?

I understand there is a pedigree to the name 'Backo'?

Could the more enlightened people please enlighten a rookie like myself as to who Sam was?

Appreciate it heaps.

Slammin' Sam Backo played for the Raiders, Brisbane, Queensland and Australia. Won two man of the match awards in his seven Qld appearances and became the first Australian forward to score a try in all three Ashes Tests in 1988.

He was a huge man mountain that played for Canberra, Brisbane, QLD and Australia despite a few fitness issues

Just doing some more research, Joel Reddy (son of Rocket Rod) and Dan Backo (son of Slammin' Sam) were both in an AIS squad last year.

maybe our lack in the halves might be due to the fact Smith has faith in guys like Smith, Mateo and Green to step up.

Sam was a legend. An original Raider from '82, he was part of the Raiders 87 GF team, and was poached by Brisbane in their formative years. A big, tough front rower who had a knack of scoring tries close in, usually, sadly, v NSW.

His clame to fame was after an Origin game at Lang Park, when Sam had scored the match winning try. He was interviewed live on the sideline, and, when asked what he thought of the game, he replied "Yeah it was f*cking great", and then proceeded to look very sheepish.

Thanks guys for all the info RE: Sam Backo.

Another player with a pedigree at Parra, following Grothe.

Should be awesome to see him play in the Blue and Gold!

Joel Reddy's also got some pedigree... apart from currently being an assistant coach at the Eels, his father Rod, was a Kangaroo

...and was a major stumbling block in our attempt to beat St George in the 1977 Grand Finals

Misty, the Sam Backo post-origin interview is one of those golden moments of league telly!

Daniel Backo wont come into Flegg, I'll put money on it he moves straight into reggies.

17-18 years old and has played junior grades for Toowoomba only. I'll take your money. Give him a few matches to adjust to full time footy much like the other youg guys. ;-)
