Gold!!!
The Sharks have secured the services of experienced Broncos forward Darren Mapp for the next two seasons.
Mapp, just 24 years of age but with over 60 NRL games to his credit, has signed a two-year deal that will see him join the Sharks for the start of the 2006 season.
While in other signing news, young forward Keith Galloway has announced that will be leaving the club at the end of the 2005 season to join the Wests Tigers.
In a statement made by Sharks General manager Steve Rogers, it was confirmed that Galloway had accepted a three-year deal with the Tigers.
While obviously disappointed to lose a player of Keiths potential and ability, we believe the offer we made to him more than reflected his current status in the game, Rogers explained. Keith went to Stuart (Raper) and explained the extent of the Wests Tigers offer before accepting it, but we felt we came up with what was very fair and reasonable considering his age and experience.
We do though wish Keith all the best in his future endeavours.
On the positive side of the ledger, Mapp, originally from the NSW Southern Highlands where he played his junior football for the Moss Vale Dragons, has been in the NRL for five seasons. A hardworking 100-plus kg prop, Sharks coach Stuart Raper sees Mapp as being more than capable of filling some of the void being left by imminent retirement of Jason Stevens.
While he is still a young player, Darren is a very experienced first grader, Raper said. He has been very impressive for the Broncos both this year and during the past few seasons. He will be a welcome addition to our player roster.
Mapp was in the Brisbane run-on side for his teams win over the Sharks in their round 17 clash last weekend.
During an NRL career which began in the year 2000 with Brisbane, Mapp has clocked up 63 first grade appearances, including 37 for the Broncos, despite playing behind the likes of international forwards Shane Webcke, Petero Civoniceva and Brad Thorn. He has played 12 games for Brisbane to date in 2005. Mapp played for the Broncos in 2000, moved to Canberra for the 2001-2002 seasons, before returning to Queensland. He played 26 matches in the NRL for the Raiders.
The Sharks remain active in the player market, with more signing announcements for the 2006 season and beyond expected soon.
