Avg crowds have not significantly changed for 6 years and have in fact dropped over last two seasons. In that time population growth in Cities with NRL teams has increased significantly, probably close to 1 million people plus extra. Last year TV audiences were down and I suspect this year we will see around same. This isn't perception it is fact. Aside from one high profile game series, and the final game was a drop, all facts would suggest a diminishing interest in the NRL.

Crowds are up on last year, wouldn't that indicate a growing interest?

Disagree with that.

We was hired as an outsider who clearly had no idea about the NRL. That was done with the clear intnetion of having someone come in impartial to the infighting rife in league.

He ahs put pople on in positions who supposedly have league at heart with extensive knowledge of the game.

These poeple seem to knot gove a shit about league.

I think Smith is doing a bloody good job.

You can't build a strong house without laying a solid foundation. I htink he's doing that.

The AFl did not become a monster under Demitr......Demetro......the bloke with the big chocko name, the day after he walked in.

Yeah sure he is laying a foundation.....
But the foundation is costing a bucket load and the people who are going to live in it might not want to stay by the time it has been built.

The point of the thread is that he is a perception man.
A HR driven CEO that wants to change the game to become appealing.
Guess what boys and girls.....
The figures are down across the board. Attendances and ratings.

That is the bottom line!
And personally I don't lime where footy is headed. It's boring.

Alright Stone Cold, calm down...

Not willing to comment on the bloke after two years. It isn't attractive to everyone, but I like to believe the more corporate direction to be a big payoff in the end for fans. If in 4-5 years he hasn't improved the game and the general image of rugby league, then I'd start questioning his place.

I'm a bit neutral on Smith. He's clearly leading the game down a bright path in terms of management but he's also made some very dumb choices that were reactionary and ignorant of Rugby League as a game.

I'm on the fence for now. He's made some progress but also some huge blunders.

They continue to introduce new rules while they still can't get the old ones right. The obstruction as well as control/maintaining contact are a complete mess and the outcome each game can be different compared to the next.

Until they're getting what they're doing right or at least find a common ground they need to stop changing things.

The TV deal while dollar wise was great, was/is trash. A delayed game on a Sunday afternoon is one of the worst things I've ever heard in my life. Either kick the game off at four or broadcast it at three. The two Friday night games back to back doesn't work either. No one is sitting up till 12 to watch an hour and a half of footy with five hours of ads. I would love to see the ratings for the second game. I can only imagine they are awful.

Broadcast both at the same time, stick one on GEM (I'm sure the two viewers of antiques roadshow will be devastated) and let people decide which to watch or to flick between.

I've watched maybe six games this year. All three Origin games and three other games scattered throughout the year. League has been awful this year even with my team being successful. The standard is down across the board in a big way.

Gallop got 75k to the World Cup final in Brazil and Dave Smith could only attract 7k the other night at campbeltown.

It's a more corporate feel cause they have 3 times the money to spend.

That's what corporates do.......they hire people to create a bigger management team in the hope that with more people with more areas of expertise you can forge a better product.

Crap, it's bullsh1t PR.

Footy ain't a bank.
You ain't dealing just with figures.
You are dealing with the emotions of the fans who are the shareholders. I don't think Dave has worked that one out yet. The NRL doesn't have a share price .....but if it did it wouldn't be worth much ATM based on the facts....low crowds, poor ratings and as I've said ad nauseam, a predictable and less interesting product.

We are on track to have the third biggest crowd average in our history and above last year continuing our dominance as the biggest domestic rugby comp on earth with a media deal twice as big as the next best. The second origin this year was the biggest rating of all time.
Yes there are many issues that need resolving, but save us the news limited doom and gloom because it isn't that bad!

If you've only watched three club games, how can you say league has been awful this year? That's like eating one whopper and then saying all burgers at every fast food place are now terrible.

Smith is just the front man for the Commission. Does anybody seriously believe that he has done anything at all that has not either originated at board level (i.e. the Commission), or been vetted and approved by his employer? The Commission calls the shots, no doubt about that. How on earth could Smith do anything radical to change the game, he knows very little about the game or its history.

He is a professional manager with a background a million miles away from sport in general, and rugby league in particular.

It's his job to present a face to the media, the public, and, most importantly, the corporate world. He seems to do that fairly well.

Your name is appropriate, the ARLC doesn't meet enough to be able to micro manage as you suggest, they set the long term initiatives and Smith delivers them. Of course radical changes will be rubber stamped by the commission but they are 99% of the time going to trust their ceo, that's why they hired him. If anything it's the clubs that call the shots and they are consulted with by Smith.

So it's the clubs who are micro-managing Smith? That's fortunate, considering that in terms of understanding the sport that he is supposedly managing, he is still very much a novice.

It beggars the imagination that the Commission would trust a blow-in who has absolutely no background in the game to make strategic decisions.

Never in the world of backward thinking or planning have i seen such a negative run code.
Instead of announcing new owners for the Titans, or introducing new expansion teams into Brisbane while the G20 meeting is taking place, our code has again missed every opportunity to grow, expand, gain press (world press) and secure our strongest market(which is Brisbane).
Dave Smith needs to act. even blind freddy can see this open-window,.

Move the Titans up the road to Logan, now, not in 5 years time, and expand another team into Brisbane now.

I am starting to doubt Dave smith's credibility. Even blind Freddy could run our code.,

When the shoulder charge is brought back the person responsible will have done a good job. Penalising it is just soft. It's contact with the head in any form that needs Penalising more severely. Not body on body contact that's often just bracing for impact.

Just have a head contact grading system. Starting at 3 weeks for barely making contact, and 10+ weeks for the more dangerous contact. Maybe even use an automatic sin. bin for shoulder charges with head contact. Likewise for any lifting tackles. It cut out punching.

The dinosaurs of administration past is what put the game in it's current position. Dave Smith is recently inserted into the poorly run confides of rugby league. To see, heartland clubs with decades of history and success still can't get there house in order and beg for handouts instead of doing something about it. Just because there clubs are in heartland doesn't mean poorly run and amateur hour can go on and on.

the 16 nrl clubs need some accountability for once and see what they need to do to be self sufficient instead of draining the $1 billion tv deal.
