anyone else see it - by the law the decision was porbably correct but what was the Manly player meant to do - dig a hole.

I can understand the whole obstruction thing when 10m out from the try line but it won't work on a kick return.

The ruling can be exploited very easy to gain advantage to the team who just kicked the ball. Just make sure you are standing by an opposition player and when the fullback/winger runs passed pretend that there was an obstruction.

It's up to the player with the ball not to run in such a way that the defense gets impeded by an obstructing player. It was a fair enough call...

Williams should never have run right besidce his own player. thats schoolboy stuff. your always taught not to do that. its a blatant obstruction.

Fair call within the rules of the game. 24-0 up would have been sweet though.

I'm not so sure, he picked up the ball and pretty much ran straight toward the tryline, Lyon was just standing there doing nothing. Similar to the situation when chasing a kick, defenders aren't required to get out of the way of the chasers.

The difference is that the player in possession is in control of where he is running. You can't control where a kick is going to go if you're the team in defense.

Then Williams' only alternative was to run, not toward the tryline, but infield to the other side on Lyon, so the defender could tackle him. Of course, that may've obstructed the other two defenders who were on the other side of Lyon, and still a penalty

It has nothing to do with intent. You've already proved how smart you are in this thread.
