Dean Pay quits Bulldogs

Wasn't Barrett the only Penrith under 20s coach over a period of time to not win the title?

Amazing that he's now had two clubs go out of their way to sign him as head coach.

Sign Anthony Griffin and he will rebuild it. He made Penrith competitive, obviously with help, before being shafted and I’d argue we were a f**king mess.

Good or not Dean Pay has not been given much support by his board and the club administration. Thing is no one is going to do well there with the infighting seemingly still going on.

Weren't they talking about re-signing Foran last week. Not sure who's idea it was but it tells you everything about the club. Targeting Cotric for big money to play centre when you've got Hopoate, DWZ, Smith. Fix your spine you boofheads, it's by far the worst in the comp.

I'm sorry but hardly...
Brown got back to back spoons and then the knights spluttered in his third season and he was gone by August. The knights still didn't make the 8.

Barrett probably worse...
Des has basically the same team he did and they were going great before tom t and afb got injured.

he took over with team that probably should have gone winless in his first season (which is inheriting a mess). By the end of his third season they were a fringe top 8 team. Pay inherited a stronger squad than Brown did and by the end of his tenure they are still in wooden spoon battles.

big hit!

Word is, he's great as an assistant. And you'd think he'd learn a thing or two about man-management from the manly experience.

In saying that, he's not the man for the job, not necessarily because of his performance at Manly, but more that he doesn't have the experience to build from the ground up. Canterbury need experience and leadership.

Barrett needs to realise this and wait for the right job. Taking any head role that merely comes up will end his career.

I agree, it says more about Canterbury and how poorly managed they are right now that they're even contemplating Barrett as an viable option.

Yep, I remember reading into his record when rumours first started emerging that we were looking at replacing Toovey with him. We'd made the Prelim in 2012, the GF in 2013, the Semis in 2014, then poor Toovey had one average year and he got sacked to bring in a bloke who managed to take the Panthers' amazing U20s results backwards.

Fair point. Pay didn't have Pearce, klemmer and ponga join the bulldogs though.

Trying to win games with basically no spine is near impossible. Maybe the Dogs see Barrett as been able to attract better players. Penrith have a lot of players outside the top squad who have the ability to play NRL and maybe they think he might be able to get some over to the Dogs.
Bottom line the Dogs needed a new coach

Signing Crichton, DWZ, Katoa and CHN really didnt help them. Not much point raiding teams talent (using that term loosely for Katoa and Crichton) if you can't get them to perform.

Barrett is not going to fix a mess like the Bulldogs. He had a spine of Turbo, DCE and Koroisau at Manly. For very average results.

Not sure how he has ever been rated in the first place. One season as Under 20s coach and misses the finals. With Ciraldo and Brannan winning competitions the year either side of that. One season in NRL that was slightly above average thanks to the spine he had.

I wouldn't be willing to say he could do any better than Dean Pay. He couldnt do worse. But its a ridiculous signing imo

Have you seen DWZ and Smith play centre? Whilst spine is definitely a priority there isn't exactly an abundance of quality spine players on the market

It's still a damn shame what happened to Toovey. I believe that one off year they had quite a few injury dramas as well.

It's even more strange that he hasn't picked up any other head coaching roles since those days - especially when someone like Kearney or Ricky Stuart (coming off his Eels tenure) keep finding work.

Surely they are not going with Barrett. That would just be making a bad situation worse. Absolute suicide. Barrett is the same as a coach as he was as a player...good when it's good. Unfortunately, it's a long way from good at the Bulldogs.
