Dean Young is silly if he has called Farah a Mediterranean Descendant. That is childish stuff. Really childish.

Dont go blaming Farah, blame Young. I do agree it is on the lower scale of Racial vilification but as someone said, a massive percentage of the Dragons supporter base is of a mediteranean / Middle Eastern back ground. Young is just silly and it goes to show his level of intelligence.

If someone called me a Mediterranean Descendant I would smack them in the head. I get offended unless I invite the comment myself.

Racial Vilification is degrading to human life and if taken personal, the NRL should act upon this with a fine.

What happens on the field stays on the field. An old cliche though one I hope holds true more often than not.

My take on "racism" (and watch the anti RL brigade get stuck into the code's policy yet again) and villification in RL in general.

The first massive instance of racial villification that I remember personally was the Chris Caruana/Owen Craigie incident of 1997. Owen complained, Caruana was dealt with and we moved on. The next year I remember an interview in RLW with Matthew Ridge and they asked him about racism in the game and he used that incident as an example. If memory serves his words were along the lines of "Fair play for making a stand but get over yourself Owen. If I had a dollar for every time someone called me a black so and so I'd be a very rich man."

I also cite the interview I read with Ian Roberts where he was asked how he reacted to being sledged for being gay. His repsonse was along the lines of "I didn't care. If I was black I would have been sledged for that. If I was Jewish I'd probably get sledged for that as well."

Look, any sort of vilification, racial and family oriented in particualar, exists in sport and society in general. For me it comes down to the individual. If you can cop it on the chin and move on then fair play. If you want to complain then you are within your rights too and I'm not going to hold it against you.

End of .

I thought Mediterranean Descendant stopped being offensive at some point. I call myself a Mediterranean Descendant, I call my mates Mediterranean Descendants also. And I enjoyed The Mediterranean Descendant Boy. I feel bad now.

The word "Mediterranean Descendant" has been reappropriated to be used in a positive manner by Greeks, Italians, Lebanese etc for as long as I can remember. It's kind of like when black guys call each other "n****rs" or when Irishmen refer to themselves as "Paddys" or "Micks".

Absolutely no place for it in the game. It is an easy one. Keep all racism out of Rugby League. I love a sledge as much as the next man but that is a line that should not be crossed.

I agree with your comment in principle but if a sledge can't be mildly rascist (and I think "Mediterranean Descendant" is at the lesser end of the scale) what can it be? If you call someone a girl, the feminists want your balls. If you call them a twig, you are a homophobe. Calling someone a genius is offensive to "disadvantaged" people. If you call them fat, will obese people take issue with the remark? (and apparently that's a quarter of the population). Political correctness is all well and good but where do you draw the line?

Young cleared

St George Illawarra hooker Dean Young has escaped sanction over an alleged racial comment and is free to play in next week's NRL grand final.
On-field audio failed to pick up comments made during the altercation between Young and Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah in Saturday night's preliminary final, so the NRL match review committee were left with little option on Sunday but to clear the Dragons No.9 when the Tigers declined to make an official complaint.
Farah declined two opportunities to make a complaint to on-field referee Ben Cummins, but could be heard accusing Young at a scrum minutes later of calling him a "f...ing Mediterranean Descendant".
"The on-field audio provided no evidence to confirm if any comment had been made," the match review committee said in a statement.
"The on-field audio does contain an accusation from Farah and a denial from the St George Illawarra player.
"The Wests Tigers have today declined a request to provide any further information that may assist the match review committee.
"Having assessed all the available information, the match review committee does not believe there is sufficient evidence to warrant a charge."
There was good news too for two other grand final combatants.
Sydney Roosters playmaker Todd Carney and Dragons lock Jeremy Smith were both charged with grade one offences but were declared free to play in the decider after lodging early guilty pleas.
Carney's was a careless high tackle charge for a hit on Gold Coast skipper Scott Prince.
Smith was charged with making dangerous contact with his knees in an incident which left Tigers winger Lote Tuqiri with suspected broken ribs.

Young cleared of racial slur

Farah shook hands with Young at the end of the game, and did not make an official complaint.

Move along, nothing to see here.
There's no place for racism in the modern game. But I thought it was more to do with the scuffle over the goal line. It got heated for a second before the two players quickly remembered what they were there for.

Nevertheless, it comes down to context. Even if the word 'Mediterranean Descendant' is considered less offensive nowadays (given that those who it was directed against have taken ownership of it), if the recipient finds it offensive it then becomes slur.

If Young did call him a Mediterranean Descendant, and Farah took offence, then even in the heat of the game Young should apologise. If Farah is cool with that, then we move on. If Young didn't say anything like that, then it's all just a misunderstanding and again we move on.

As you say, they were shaking hands afterwards.

Oh, and to Raiders Premiers, the hypocrite racist playing the race card...

I note from your posts that you enjoy a bit of name calling and racial stereotyping yourself, especially towards other members who you think come from a middle eastern background.
Woahhhh bro don't bash me yuleh...
Magod yuleh, get some 20 inch dolces from tempe bro itll look hektik i swr 2 god
What's that old saying? People in glass houses shouldn't call themselves Raiders_Premiers.

You asked if I cared about the issue

I do, I am ethnic (at least partial) and have faced racial vilification before. If you're an Anglo-Saxon, you probably haven't

But no keep going Willow, I want to see how dumb you really are

I dunno how people can take the comment about being a 'Mediterranean Descendant ' so personally. Im of a European background , therefore a Mediterranean Descendant, yet i couldn't care less about someone saying it to me regardless of the way they say it. I just dont find things like that offensive at all.

Farah, a professional, should definitely NOT let things like that affect him in any way. He is playing one of the most important games of his life and to stop and make a deal out of being called a 'Mediterranean Descendant' is just silly. Im not saying its OK to call someone a Mediterranean Descendant, i just think you need to be the bigger person and not let it get to you.
