Declining A Kick At Goal

Knights declined a kick at goal when 23 - 20 down and three minutes to go.

I've seen thousands of rugby league matches - Pre-NRL and NRL and never seen a kick declined in such circumstances.

One of the most plodder plays I've seen. The clock was stopped, so time wasn't an issue. If they kick the goal, then they only need to push down field for field position in order to get a shot at the field goal. Instead, they had to score a try and came up with the poor play out wide with the forward pass.

I wonder if the call came from Wayne Bennett.

If so, it confirms my belief that he is steadily closing in on the ranks of "the most overrated coach in recent memory".

Without decent cattle to work with, he is nothing but a plodder of a coach.

Knights made the semi final last year.
I think that's pretty decent with the squad he had.

I wouldn't give my all for my job if I wasn't getting paid.

Was never going to be important anyway. We're not going to get into a position where 2 points in f/a is going to cost us a finals spot, nor do I think we're playing bad enough to get the wooden spoon.

Time continues whilst taking the kick. It stops at the completion of the kick.

Bingo. Because the Knights didn't take the kick the clock stayed off and it didn't matter how slow the Tigers hobbled to kick off. If they took the kick that time would have come back on and stayed on.

Dragons have done it in the past under W.B. as well. Think the margin was bigger than 3 though.

This.

Add to that our kickers were having a shocker with the boot and the fact that our team has shown they cannot kick field goals in even less desperate circumstances, I didn't mind the decision.

if they kick it then the tigers will simply slot another field goal.

same reason why teams don't go for 2 field goals when down by 2 because the other team will catch on and kick another.

Think the Knights must have felt a bit embarrassed with all the leg ups the Refs gave them during the game.

Otherwise, dumb call.

Good old Plodley. I'm assuming he put in a good shift today to get selected as Captain from the bench for NSW.
