Defenders carrying on after a call of "held"

I believe the finger for slow play the balls is being pointed at the Storm because they are the best exponents of it and for some reason aren't penalised accordingly. While the Storm do put on some exciting games, watching them strangle the attack of an opposing team with slow play the balls can make a lot of their games very hard to watch.

Don't agree. I played in Brisbane in the late 80's and early 90's and if you hung on for 3-4 seconds after the held call you were penalised out of the game.
I grew up in the 90s and we had whole training sessions about putting players on their backs and peeling off slowly. All this before Melbourne even entered the comp.

I agree with the first part here, I don't agree with the second. Melbourne are the most penalised team in the comp

The whole peeling off thing was because gang tackles were the new thing,

In regards to your second comment I'm sure the Roosters fans will politely disagree.

Wow. Mythbusted. What would be interesting is where on the field the penalties are given and for what infringements,

I wish you could tell how many penalties awarded in those stats to see the #penaltybroncos numbers.

I dunno about penalties awarded (last time I seen that stat Cowboys were awarded the most) but the Broncos are the second least penalised team

I agree that the ruck should be cleaned up, and that players peeling off slowly is irritating as f**k.

The problem is that if the refs penalised properly, and the ruck sped up, cynical coaching means that we wouldn't get more flowing football, we'd just get a whole lot more dummy half running. I don't know what the answer to that is.

Enforce proper play the balls for a start. See how long it takes the likes of Andrew Fifita to figure it out.

It's happening a lot and none of the officials are paying attention, or they're simply ignoring it. Some of the examples have been farcical - ref screams "Held!" and then the defenders take the player to the ground despite having a clear opportunity to release.

On the flip side, tackled players getting up and interfering with the marker is also not being looked at. I see it all the time - straight after playing the ball, the tackled man will hold onto, push or simply step aside from the marker effectively making him not square.

Makes you wonder what the refs are coached to actually look for.

I'd say they are coached to avoid penalties as much as possible, unless it's been a while and you think you can get away with it.

What about the tackled player also stopping when held is called , 90% of the time they are still pushing forward encouraging the defender to stay committed to the tackle , or even crawling on the ground while the tackler tries to get off but gets all tangled up.
Between held and actually stopping can be 3-4 metres at times
