From Turin to Budgewoi...
Del Piero to arrive on Sunday
September 14, 2012, 11:54 am By Liam FitzGibbon AAP

Alessandro del Piero could make his Sydney debut in the humble surrounding of Budgewoi after it was confirmed he will arrive earlier than expected.

Italian great Alessandro del Piero could pull on a Sydney FC shirt as soon as next weekend after the club announced he would arrive earlier than expected.

The 37-year-old striker will touch down in Sydney on Sunday morning after sealing a lucrative two-year deal with the A-League club last week.

It was thought the former Juventus star would arrive midway through next week but, after receiving his visa clearance, he was keen to link up with his new team as soon as possible.

Del Piero will have to wait at least a day to meet his new teammates, who do not return from Saturday's trial against Brisbane in Mackay until Monday, and is expected to train with them for the first time on Tuesday.

The earlier-than-expected arrival increases Del Piero's chances of making his Sydney debut in their September 22 trial against Newcastle - in the humble surroundings of Budgewoi on the NSW Central Coast.

Sydney coach Ian Crook and medical staff will run the rule over the Italian's fitness, but certainly won't rush their prize recruit into action for the sake of it.

Del Piero has reportedly kept himself in good shape, working with a personal trainer in Turin.

"As a coaching and medical group well have a chat to him and a good look at him so we can plan through that process," Crook said.

"It's fantastic news that he is arriving on Sunday and we look forward to integrating him into the Sydney FC team.

"He is coming out a little bit earlier than we had thought which is good and shows he's a pro and is keen to get started, which we knew was the case."

Del Piero, who shunned the likes of Liverpool and Celtic to come to the A-League, has generated a fresh wave of excitement for the new season with Sydney claiming his arrival has already helped secure more than 2000 new memberships.

He is expected to make his A-League debut in New Zealand, in Sydney's season opener away to Wellington Phoenix on October 6.

The Sky Blues will play their first home game against the Newcastle Jets on October 13 before facing Western Sydney Wanderers in the inaugural Sydney derby at Parramatta Stadium on October 20.

Sydney are expecting sell-out crowds for their first two home games, and another big turnout for their round four clash against Perth, which has been switched to ANZ Stadium.

This signing is one of the biggest things to ever happen to the sport in this country. And he might be old but he's still got class. Worth every cent he's earning.

Can't believe the insular morons on TFC. You expect that of fumbleball fans but not RL fans.
Every code has them.
Such hypocrites. Call Victorians insular but then come out with that dribble in TFC.

That's the whole joke of that board. They are no different to the victorians they bag in their level of insularity (if that's a word). 10 brain cells tops over there.

Huge signing if it comes off

I don't I've ever clicked on the fight club once in the whole time I've been a user at LU. Seriously, what's the point? Why waste your time? If you think a sport sucks, why devote your time to talking about it so much?? anyway...
These 3 posts are quite possibly the 3 best posts I've ever read on here.

MSH, so right on their hypocrisy. The anti-afl trolls on here are exactly the same as the worst kind of anti-nrl types among AFL fans.

As a fan of both codes I cop it from both mobs and they're both as geniused as each other.

RB, also spot on. The TFC regulars are like an obese man lecturing you about sneaking in that 2nd donut.

LP, I agree 110%. I love pretty much every code, but if others don't just don't think about those other codes instead of devoting more energy to hating them than loving your own.

This thread has gone way off the planet but anyways.

I agree with you.
About anti AFL crap being the same as anti NRL crap,

however, amongst the non trolling of the two fan bases, there is a difference, another percentage (however large) afl fans who arent genuinely anti rl have a belief that AFL should and will dominate the eastern seaboard.

You cop it because you act like you know everything about everything
I know some things. I know Del Piero is world class. I recall saying a Polish born German bloke by the name of Lukas would be a massive success while he was playing for a relegation club. I'm being proven right on that. You can do wonders with a player when you put him at the disposal of a top manager.

Lol acting like you're the only person on the f**king planet who had heard of Podolski.

Thankfully a better manager in Jogi Löw has identified (correctly) that Reus and Schürrle as better. Even Demba Ba went from the BuLi and dominates the EPL

The most surprising part of his arrival yesterday was how refreshed he looked given a 24 hr flight. I guess that's what first class can do though...

You know a football club has 'made it' when they start selling their counterfeit jerseys across Europe...

you enjoy kidding yourself don't you! They haven't made it big, it's Del Piero they're selling, not Sydney FC...

I hope Sydney FC didn't tell him that those are the type of crowds he'll play in front of!

I wonder what he made of the biff/bite? Maybe his PA told him it's a Liverpool thing, you know with Graham coming from Merseyside and Suarez now playing there

What's your point? I've been through countless markets in Europe where they sell those fake jerseys and I don't ever recall seeing any non-European club's kit. Because of ADP, Sydney has made it big.

Negatives:

*The guy is as slow as a slug. I guess if he had some semblance of pace, he would not be playing here.

*He is playing with hopeless teammates.

Positives:

*He seems like a down-to-earth nice guy.

*He is the most skilful player in the A-League by a fair distance. If his support cast could set him up better, he'd score a million.
