Mahendra Singh Dhoni has retired from Test cricket with immediate effect. The decision comes after India drew the third Test in Melbourne on Tuesday.

A BCCI statement said: “One of India's greatest Test Captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the Test Rankings MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test Cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket.

M S Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T 20 formats.

BCCI while respecting the decision of M S Dhoni to retire from Test Cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test Cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India.

Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian Team for the Fourth and Final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney from the 6th of January 2015

He has never given a f**k about tests, and was seriously overrated.

f**k off back to the IPL princess, you won't be missed.

yup

I remember a few years back he was rested from 2 SL tests, cause he was burnt out after a ODI series and the IPL tournament

uninspirational test captain (with tactics, field placements and leading by example)

With your job being test captain of India you are always gonna have haters which Dhoni had coming out of his ears. Credit to him for batting the way he wanted leading the side the way he wanted. Everyone always thinks they can do a better job until they get the job. I've enjoyed watching him play and has at least brought some balls and arrogance/fighting spirit into the Indian team.

Time was up in tests and he will prob go on and carve up the short form of the game and make billions doing it. Can't begrudge him on that, everyone has their preferences at least he was up front about it.

Kohli will do wonders with this team I think.

Who's the new keeper though? Anyone else around besides Saha?

Good on him that he is doing this when all it means is leaving millions on the table. It's the right thing for the team. I fear a Kholi led India more than I fear a Dhoni led India. Kohli is a fighter, he is tough, if he can mould this generation with lieutenants like Vijay and Rahane they have the core of a very good team for the next generation.

They just need to find a keeper and some quicks.

Dhoni's attitude as a test skipper has always been lazy at best. A decision long overdue as far as India are concerned.

Looking forward to Kleenex "It's all about me" Kohli leading these muppets around into the future. Should ensure some good fiery contests.

Dhoni has been a very solid keeper batsman in test cricket. But not a particularly great batsman with an inflated average thanks to home conditions, and an atrocious captain.

He had the luxury of coming off the Ganguly era and having a wealth of batting resources. For someone with an unorthodox and raw batting approach its bizarre how unimaginative and safe he was as a skipper, if the lame draw was available he would always take it and he clearly put the IPL as top priority.

He's smart, no doubt there. He probably realised the fat lady was humming and soon fingers would be pointing to him, he got out before it got ugly.

This is good for Indian cricket, as much as I don't like Kohli his attitude might get them doing better than this.

Funny enough, I saw this coming in the way that I thought he had enough. Good on him for making the call though, Indian test cricket can move forward from here.

Its interesting that he's bagged for batting in Indian conditions. I've seen a number of southern hemisphere bats head up there on tour only for their career to be destroyed by the conditions they face.

Irrespective, IMO, its been a pretty good test career. Particularly if you compare it against other Indian keeper-batsmen, he is it would appear by a considerable margin their best in test history in that regard.

Example? Just curious.

I've seen batsman struggle in the sub-continent (e.g. Ponting) but not sure about careers being destroyed.

Dhoni had been an alright captain in Tests. But his time was coming to an end. I think he was losing passion to play tests as well.

Kohli will lead India well. But he needs decent fast bowlers who use their brain.

India have a lot of work to do to fix things.

Wriddhiman Saha Dhoni's replacement is ordinary with the bat and not as good with the gloves.

He did well moulding India into a good side from 08 up until the England tour in 2011. Deserves a bit more credit than what he's getting tbf to him. Well played MS Dhoni.
