Dietary suppliments

Messages

Hey guys, I'm currently on a diet and looking at dropping from a high of 117kgs to approximately 80kgs (currently 109kgs). I am on a high protein / low carb diet, and just wondered if anyone here used any suppliments to help their weight loss.

At the moment I have a Max's WPI shake after a gym session (never as a meal replacement), and use Musashi fat metabolisers as directed on the package. I previously used BSc Lipoburn for the same reason. Does anyone have any advice as to anything else I should use, or am I on the right path here?

High protien/low carb diets can be incredibly unhealthy because you miss out on many essential elements of a good diet, and most people put the weight back on as soon as they go off the diet as they compensate for all the deficiencies they develop.

There is one variation that is claimed by very credible people to be OK though, and that is the CSIRO 'Total Wellbeing' diet. It's basically a scientifically worked out diet sponsered by the Australian meat industry that includes sh*tloads of animal protien, but also all the essential elements of a healthy diet. You can get the book at any library i imagine.

I have done the CSIRO diet before, and it kinda worked but I didn't get the results I was after. Not that I want to sound ungrateful for the advice, but the diet I am on is easy to follow and I am getting my daily requirements through my vegetables and a multivitamin, and I am seeing fat loss results alongside modest muscle growth.

Any thoughts on dietary suppliments roopy?

Sounds interesting, the jury seems to still be out on it at the moment for overall health. The appetite supression is proven though which could be useful.

The issue with it in Australia is that it is illegal to import it as it is not FDA approved. It will be seized by customs. I do know a local supplier that sells it though. Trust me, for an over-eater or a binge eater this stuff works. It's not a magic pill, but it's the closest I've found. I lost 50kgs using this stuff along with a clean diet and exercise. For me it took the edge off feeling hungry at night when I was tempted to eat junk. PM if you ever want the name of the supplier.

There are a few drugs available these days.

Xenical is available over the counter at chemists. It basically binds with fat so your body doesn't digest it, but it has side effects that include anal leakage if you eat a lot of fat while taking it, because the fat passes straight through and it's bloody slippery.

Just in the last few months some doctors have started prescribing the diatetes drug metformin to non diabetics for weight loss. It moderates the rate your body metabalises sugar and helps people contol their appetite accordingly. You can only get it from a doctor - and probably not all doctors are up to speed on it yet because it is a new treatment in australia anyway.

I would suggest not to worry about supplements for the moment as it appears through your diet and exercise you have already dropped 8kgs. Fat burning suppliments, I firmly believe, should only be used once the weight is not longer coming off or is at a very slow rate.

Since the start of January I dropped from 118kg to about 89kg 8 weeks ago. In the last two weeks I have only just started taking BCN XLR8 Thermogenic (BCN is a West Australian based nutrician company). I have dropped a further 3kg and am down to 86kg.

I decided to take them because my weight loss plateaued, and previous measures of changing training routine and diet had not been working. If you are already on true thermogenics (i'm not sure whether all ingredients of lipburn are in fact thermogenic) I would not suggest taking anymore supplements.

Thanks for the advice mate, good to hear from someone going through the same process. I've been taking the Musashi fat metaboliser the whole time as a suppliment for weight loss. Do you mind me asking what kind of diet you were/are on?

Make that three....

I am down from 124 to 109 currently - has been bloody slow going for me.

I am 6'2 and a big build so my aim is about 100 - lowest I have been as an adult was 92, and I have a lot more bulk on me now than I did then - I train mostly for power (legs and shoulders now ok, bench is still sh*t).

My diet is pretty clean, but not perfect - no alcohol or soft drinks, not much carbs, rarely eat out and have 2-3 meat free days per week... but I do have a sweet tooth (some berries or 1-2 squares of dark chocolate a night).

My tips -

set the alarm for 5:30 and take a thermo/supplement as soon as you wake up, then hit the gym before work - you don't have time to talk yourself out of it and once you have taken a thermo there is no way you are going back to sleep. Add to that first thing before breakfast is the best time to exercise physiologically.

get an active dog that you need to exercise every day - best personal trainer you can get (I have a GSD).

download a calorie counter app for your iPhone (if you have one... I don't) and use it religiously - weigh everything you make at home, and enter EVERYTHING. I think my wife has "shape up" (I think that is what it is called) and it has millions of pre-entered meals - dead easy and like clockwork she has 1kg a week using it for the past 7 weeks (only has like 3kg to go).

I love Jack3d as a gym supplement, and my wife swears by Keto boost supplements. I have a protein shake after a weights session to help stave off soreness, and occasionally have a couple of hydroxycut before a jog for an energy boost.

Good luck mate.

Thanks for the support mate, good to see there is plenty of motivation to lose the pork around here. As for your advice, there is one problem. It's pretty sad for someone my age, but I'm scared of dogs!

I have spoken with some people at a nutritional website, and they recommended I stick with what I am doing. When I hit a plateau, just as Frailty recommended, I should hit some specific fat loss WPI's and some Hydroxycut suppliments.

Thanks for all the help and advice people, I appreciate it.

mate.... when I was 7 I was mauled by a dog.

And when I say mauled, I mean literally mauled - over 500 stitches, 6 months in hospital, half a dozen reconstructive surgeries.

Trust me - the best thing for getting over a fear of dogs is getting a big loveable one yourself... no way you are going to be scared of something that looks like this!

Wanna bet?

I had a cat most of my youth. Must of based a lot of my lifestyle around him! (sleep a lot, only wake up for food, look pissed off at everything, etc)

I have two cats mate - they are more scary than the 40kg shepherd..... and aren't too keen on going for a jog with me, either.
