THIS will be the 24th year of Papua New Guinean semi-professional rugby league competition.
It started in 1990, as the SP Inter City Cup, followed by the Bemobile Cup in 2009 and now with the Digicel Cup since 2011.
This season the champions will fetch K65,000, runner up K15,000, third place K10,000 and fourth place K5000. Minor premiership and individual awards will be presented as well.
The 2015 grand final is between Simbu Lions and Agmark Rabaul Gurias, which will be played on Saturday at the Sir John Guise Stadium, Port Moresby.
This will be another different ball game and no favourites are predicted as both teams are currently the best and on Saturday the number one team will be crowned the kings of PNG league 2015.
Lions beat Lae Tigers 19-12 in Kundiawa and Gurias ousted Hela Wigmen 14- 4 in Kokopo, qualifying for the final showdown.
After last weekend’s preliminary semi-finals, all the teams are in recovery process but should be well prepared for the bog challenges.
From the 24 seasons, Rabaul Gurias have appeared in 11 grand finals and have won in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2012 and runners-up in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2014 ,while Lions, formerly Kundiawa Warriors, were runners-up in 1996.
The Gurias have retained the majority of the players from last season, which lost to Wigmen 34-8 in Lae. Most of the youngsters like John Ragi Jr, Jason Missian, Chris Jerry, Watson Boas and Boas Ruru have matured and are premiership-bound in their second finals appearance.
Coach Steven Nightingale has injected a lot of discipline, dedication and determination in the players to secure another finale.
This showdown will be new to the Lions if they can overcome the final football pressure in front of an expected capacity crowd in Port Moresby.
In the third and fourth placing, Wigmen and Tigers will playoff in the curtain-raiser.
