I was out with some mates that I went to school with driking. They all said they "loved hip hop". I said something like "Grandmaster Flash ey?" None of them knew who the hell I was talking about. How can so called hip hop 'fans' not know who the pioneers such as Flash, Afrika Bambata, etc. and reggae artists were who influenced the sh*t they listen to today?
Its a reflection on the state of knowledge a lot of music lovers have today. Its not confined to just the genres of rap though. I'm sure you could ask a lot of fans of the latest garage rock revival about their thoughts on the Rolling Stones or the Beatles or whatever and they'd have no idea either.
I mean, Jet is pretty much one part AC/DC mixed with one part Rolling Stones with a hint of Beatles thrown in for flavour, but the majority of their fans probably wouldn't even know more than one or two songs by those artists.
