Do you think that Australia could earn the right to host the World Cup in the not too distant future?? I believe we are finally coming of age as a nation of soccer players as the Socceroos have proved, and Australia has the facilities to accomodate the World Cup. What is everyones opinions?????

yes. we have excellent facilities but i think ground capacity would be a problem because we have smallish grounds by soccer world cup standards

we hosted the biggest sporting tournament....... the olympics in 2000 pretty successful, so i cant see why can't we hold the 2nd biggest sporting event in the world.

and with the stadiums, i think the limit is 45 or 50 000 seaters

We won't hold it till 2018 at the minimum. 2010 will be Africa, 2014 South America and we have a shot with 2018 although I think Europe will get it.

You got it the wrong way round Lewis. The football World Cup is THE biggest sporting event in the world. And unlike with the Olympics, Australia would need more than a few world class stadiums with a large capacity.

In reality only Telstra Stadium, Aussie Stad, Lang Park and Colonial are up to standard. A few more would be needed but realistically, 2018 is the best Aus could hope for so by then, im sure there would be a few more world class stadiums.

i'd like to point out that the world cup of football is bigger than the olympics.

The problem with holding the world cup is that by FIFA's regulations I don't believe that 'hills' are allowed? Stadiums must be all-seaters, and must have impecable facilities at top stadiums. Places like Lang Park, Telstra Stadium, and MCG are a start, but 32 teams are playing, so atleast 6+ venues are needed.

And although Australia did hold the olympics, the serious interest in the sport would be very little compared to other continents(all of them) so FIFA's best interests(purely financially) would rule us out. Also holding the WC means direct qualification, but we need to prove that we can get their first.

Calm down.

Yes Sydney did hold the Olympic games, but they used multiple facilities that didn't involve renovating major stadiums.

WA:
Subiacco

SA:
Football park
These two aren't exactly "world class".

But what probably would pass the test
*Telstra dome
*Telstra stadium
*SFS
*MCG
*Northpower stadium
*Lang Park

It's a start as you've said but from what I recall France used around double the venues currently listed, and so did Korea.

20 were used in the last world cup, 10 in France. If we were to host it, then we'd have to consider co-hosting with New Zealand.

I'm pretty sure the minimum capacity has to be over 40,000 and the stadiums must be all seater

They don't have to be over 40 000 thats for sure, at France 98 they had stadiums that held only 28 000-32 000.

Australia could possibly get the World Cup in 2018, if Sepp Blatter follows his rotation policy.

I think we'll be able to have the right number of stadiums to host the event, and theres no way on earth FIFA would let NZ co-host it with us.

The grounds we could use, plus the ones i think we'll upgrade/build if need be are:
Telstra Stadium
SFS
MCG
Telstra Dome
GABBA
Lang Park
Bruce Stadium
WIN Stadium-Upgrade
Gold Coast(Carrara) - Upgrade
Subiaco Oval

Other possible locations
Central coast
Newcastle
Adelaide
Another Sydney Stadium
A new stadium in Perth

However i doubt we'll be seeing the World Cup here for at least 18-22 years.

God forbid if Blatter is still in charge by 2018.

Um, MCG would not qualify.

For the WC, the pithces also have to be rectangular.

FIFA allows Australia to break the rules by allowing WC qualifying matches to be held at the MCG. I also believe the rule is now 40-45,000 seat minimu, all seater.

That leaves:

Telstra Stadium
Aussie
Suncorp
Telstra Dome (with the seating moved in)

That's about it.

As long as this AFL plague dominates 3 big markets, we won't get a WC.
