Of course he would stay loyal with all the boardroom dramas. What did everyone expect, him to walk away from a million dollar gig to go back to his profession of forklift driver or 60k.

Who said he is on a Million a year?

This isn’t a story Parramatta coach Brad Arthur will want written.

But it’s important it gets told.

Not many NRL coaches or players would be prepared to take a six-figure-sum haircut in their stride and simply get on with the business of trying to win a premiership.

The Eels coach is a classic example of the old line about the harder you work, the luckier you get.

Arthur was signed until the end of this year but when negotiations started about an extension until the end of 2022 the Eels powerbrokers put a deal to him that meant taking a decent pay cut.

Arthur is still on big money but while the best paid coaches in the game like Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bennett and Ricky Stuart are all on over $1 million a season, the Eels coach is only on about half of that.

The Parramatta coach didn’t even flinch when the Eels put the revised deal in front of him - immediately agreeing and backing himself to continue the job of trying to end the NRL’s longest premiership drought.

NRL coaching is one of the most high pressure jobs on the planet.

Just look at the way five coaches were brutally shown the door last season with contracts torn up.

It’s no surprise the most successful clubs are often the ones with the most stability in terms of the head coach role.

The chances of Eels halfback Mitch Moses leaving the Parramatta Eels? Buckley’s, none, shan’t be happening, no.

Moses has 14days and counting until round 10 when he must inform the Eels whether he’s taking up the option in his favour for the 2022 season.

Being a smart club, the Eels have also devised a further two-year extension including incentives which will keep Moses in blue and gold until the end of 2024.

Moses, currently 26, has played 157 NRL games and will be 30 by the time the Eels extended contract finishes.

In that time, Parramatta want the no.7 to help them end the NRL’s longest title drought of 35 years and counting.

The Eels will hold a recruitment and retention committee meeting on Friday April 30 where the Moses negotiations will be top of the agenda.

Also on the agenda will be Parramatta’s continued pursuit of both Kotoni Staggs and Dane Gagai for next year.

Just look at the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne. Or anywhere super coach Bennett goes.

You’ve only got to watch Arthur in the Parramatta dressing room on game day to see how much he loves the job.

Which is why the Eels didn’t hesitate in handing him the job for a ninth straight season.

Despite a wooden spoon in 2018, Arthur has piloted Parramatta to three of the last four finals series and has the club again on track to be there come September this year.

When you look at the way he rips into getting on with the job it’s easy to see why the Eels players want to play for their coach.

And you’ve only got to look at the improvement in the Eels roster across the board to see Arthur’s ability.
